India rapidly moving towards becoming world's third-largest economy: PM Modi
Speaking at the 16th edition of the Rozgar Mela, the Prime Minister said that India's manufacturing sector is one of its 'greatest strength' and that the government has taken steps to boost employment in the private sector.
'The focus of the Indian government is also on creating new employment opportunities in the private sector. Recently, the government has approved a new scheme - the Employment Linked Incentive scheme. Under this scheme, the government will provide Rs 15,000 to youth securing their first job in the private sector, meaning the government will contribute to the first salary of their first job. For this, the government has allocated a budget of about Rs 1 lakh crore, and this scheme will help in creating approximately 3.5 crore jobs,' he said.
He also highlighted the steps taken to support manufacturing, saying, 'Today, one of India's greatest strengths is our manufacturing sector. A large number of new jobs are being created in manufacturing... To boost the manufacturing sector, Mission Manufacturing has been announced in this year Budget. In recent years, we have strengthened the Make in India campaign.'
The Prime Minister said that two sectors in particular, electronics and mobile phone manufacturing, and defence manufacturing, have seen massive growth.
'From PLI scheme, 11 lakh jobs were created. In the recent years, mobile phones and electronic sectors saw unprecedented expansion. Today, electronics worth Rs 11 lakh crores are being manufactured. This sector has witnessed growth of more than 5 times in the last 11 years. Earlier, there were only 2-4 units of mobile phone manufacturing. Now, the number has increased to 300 units where lakhs of youth are working...'
He also spoke about the rapid growth in defence production, especially after Operation Sindoor: 'There is one more such sector and after Operation Sindoor, it has been widely discussed. It is defence manufacturing. India is making new records in defence manufacturing. Our defence production has reached beyond Rs 1.25 lakh crores... Today, our country is rapidly moving towards becoming the world's third-largest economy. This is the marvel of the hard work of my youth. In the past 11 years, India has made progress across every sector,' he said.
Quoting a report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Prime Minister said that government welfare schemes have also helped boost employment.
'Recently, a report by the International Labour Organisation stated that in the past decade, over 90 crore citizens in India have been brought under the coverage of welfare schemes. The impact of these schemes goes beyond welfare -- they have also contributed significantly to employment generation. For instance, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, over 4 crore houses have been built so far. And it's not just about providing homes. The process of building these houses has created countless job opportunities across the country. In this, most of the jobs were created in villages,' PM Modi added. (ANI)

The SSP said, "Under this campaign, the police took action in various police station areas Saturday and arrested 23 fake babas roaming around in the guise of saints and sadhus. Among the arrested fake babas, 10 persons are residents of other states."

Media reports citing government sources said the Centre is keeping a close eye on the matter, and is confident that Apple is capable of dealing with the situation. A senior official from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) said the matter was directly between Apple and Foxconn, and termed it as an 'opportunity'. 'I would look at it more as an opportunity. If the workers want to go back, it's between the company and the workers. They will have to make arrangements to ensure the work continues — production won't be impacted. We facilitated their visas'. The official noted that Apple has alternatives but the primary responsibility lies with the company (Apple) to ensure that the manufacturer doesn't impact production. What was the job of Chinese engineers who went back? According to reports, the 300 Chinese engineers who were recalled by Beijing, were responsible designing the factory, handling the assembly line and training employees. The Indian government said it was monitoring the production capacity of Foxconn, one of the few companies part of the Narendra Modi government's PLI scheme. Its must be noted that China is a global manufacturing and industrial powerhouses, and most of the equipment required to assemble mobile phones comes from there. These machines require specialized training to operate, which is usually imparted by Chinese experts who work for the manufacturer of these devices. How India plans to boost iPhone manufacturing? While a decade ago, iPhone manufacturing in India was practically negligible Apple began to assemble iPhones in the country from 2017 with newer models now being manufactured at Indian plants. Apple is strengthening its footprint in India as it proves to be a key market with its high population and rapidly growing economy. Foxconn operates iPhone manufacturing plants in India's southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana, and its estimated that iPhones worth $14 billion, were assembled in India in the 2024-25 fiscal year, which means that one out of seven iPhones sold across the world carries a 'Made in India' tag. The Union government has launched the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme which is expected to attract gadget making moguls other than Apple, to establish their presence in the country. Two flagship stores were launched by Apple in Mumbai and Delhi in 2023 and Apple indicated that they are now planning to open four more retail stores in Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai.

The nominations have been made to fill vacancies created by the retirement of earlier nominated members. New Delhi: Senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam, former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, social worker Master and historian Meenakshi Jain were nominated by President Droupadi Murmu to the Rajya Sabha. The selection of Nikam was long due as he worked in high-profile cases such as the Gulshan Kumar murder, the Shakti Mill gang rape, the Marine Drive rape, the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, and the 26/11 terror attack. The special public prosecutor was routinely in the news during the trial of Akmal Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist arrested during the 2008 terror attack. He had later drawn condemnation after he revealed that Kasab had never demanded mutton biryani during his trial. Born in North Maharashtra's Jalgaon, he started practicing as a lawyer in 1979. His father was a judge but he shot to fame for the first time when he was appointed as special public prosecutor in the 1993 serial blasts case. Nikam's proximity with the BJP dispensation grew after the 26/11 case. The Narendra Modi government conferred the Padma Shri to him in 2016. Last year, the BJP dropped two-term sitting MP Poonam Mahajan from the high-profile Mumbai North Central seat and instead gave the poll ticket to Nikam. His electoral debut ended with a loss as Congress Varsha Gaikwad trounced him by a margin of 16,500-plus votes. PM Modi hailed the nominations made by the Rashtrapati Bhavan. 'Shri Ujjwal Nikam's devotion to the legal field and to our Constitution is exemplary. He has not only been a successful lawyer but also been at the forefront of seeking justice in important cases. During his entire legal career, he has always worked to strengthen Constitutional values and ensure common citizens are always treated with dignity,' he posted on X. A retired Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Shringla had served as the foreign secretary between January 2020 and April 2022. He had navigated the Indian diplomatic landscape during the Covid pandemic. Shringla was recently part of India's outreach to the Islamic world after Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack. As the Indian ambassador to the US, Shringla was credited with Modi's public event Howdy Modi in Houston and maintaining warm relationship with US President Donald Trump in his first term. He was later made the chief G20 coordinator for India's G20 Presidency in 2023 and went on to help the Modi government in organising the G20 Summit in New Delhi that year. In Shringla's biography 'Not An Accidental Rise,' author Dipmala Roka has mentioned how he managed administrative and diplomatic efforts to manage the supply chain of essentials, negotiating for the smooth supply chain of drugs and other essentials. The book further mentions that when the Modi government scrapped Article 370 of the Constitution in 2019, Shringla met 400 senators and traveled to 22 states in the US. His name had come up as a BJP candidate from Darjeeling in the last year's general elections, but the party stuck with the sitting MP Raju Bista. A former teacher and social worker of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Sadanand Master had unsuccessfully contested the 2016 and 2021 assembly poll as a BJP candidate. Currently, he is seving as the BJP state president of the Kerala unit. The Sangh veteran survived an attack by CPI(M) goons in 1994 but lost both his legs. Despite his state, he remained active in politics and the BJP presented his case to highlight the Left's brutality in Kerala. 'The BJP is making inroads in Kerala after the first Lok Sabha victory (of Suresh Gopi in Thrissur), His selection is politically important to send a message to cadres fighting against the Left rule for the last two decades,' a BJP functionary told ThePrint. Meenakshi Jain, a renowned historian of medieval and colonial India, is daughter of Times of India's former editor Girilal Jain.
