KZN boy scalded with boiling water, sister assaulted: Uncle to appear in court
A 27-year-old man has been arrested following a violent domestic incident in Nyoni (Mandeni), KZN, on Saturday during which an 18-year-old girl was assaulted and her eight-year-old brother scalded with boiling water.
The North Coast Courier reports that, according to iLembe SAPS spokesperson Priya Nunkumar-Bukum, the man – who is the children's uncle – became involved in an argument with the siblings before they were attacked, allegedly by him.
'The eight-year-old was scalded with boiling water and taken to a local clinic for treatment,' said Nunkumar-Bukum.
The man was arrested shortly after the incident and is facing charges of attempted murder and assault.
He is expected to appear in the Nyoni Magistrate's Court in due course.

Foetus discovery draws rehab centre into spotlight again
IN A shocking turn of events, police have launched an inquest after a foetus and CCTV equipment were allegedly discarded in a roadside drain by a senior official at the Tetelestai Recovery Centre (TRC) on July 10. Also read: Luke Edwards' murder accused get bail Private investigator Brad Nathanson said a passing motorist, familiar with the official, witnessed him allegedly dumping items into a drain less than 10km from the centre. After the official drove away, the motorist investigated, recording a video on his cellphone before retrieving surveillance cameras, cables, and a blue plastic bag containing a foetus. Police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed the grim finding and said an inquest docket has been opened. 'On arrival at the scene, police found the lifeless body of a newborn baby. Investigations are underway to locate the parents, and no arrests have been made,' said Netshiunda. TRC's owner Donovan de Klerk referred all questions to his lawyer, Wesley Rogers, who denied his involvement. 'My client is not linked to this in any way whatsoever. We have confirmed that the foetus issue is an inquest docket and De Klerk is not a suspect. Reports otherwise are false and defamatory,' said Rogers. The centre is also under scrutiny following the April death of patient Luke Edwards, whose body was discovered on the grounds of a nearby old-age home. Four fellow patients were arrested earlier this month and released on bail pending further investigation. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Cape Town's smash-and-grab hotspots: Where to look out for
New data from Cape Town's Metro Police CCTV network shows a clear pattern in where and when smash-and-grab criminals strike, and the numbers are rising. According to the City of Cape Town, between July 2024 and May 2025, 215 smash-and-grab incidents were recorded via the City's CCTV system. While exact numbers are likely higher, many incidents go unreported or occur outside the network's coverage, the available data points to a few areas that consistently emerge as danger zones. The most dangerous stretch, according to the data, is the corridor between Bonteheuwel and Langa, a long-time hotspot. But recent months have seen a shift. As law enforcement pressure grows in certain zones, criminals are relocating, and other intersections and suburbs are becoming increasingly active. Here are the other major hotspots in Cape Town based on incident data and reports to the Public Emergency Communication Centre: Leonsdale Beaconvale Foreshore Elsies River Industria Epping Industria Milnerton Philippi Many of these locations are clustered in the same general zones, making targeted enforcement more effective, but also more challenging as criminals adapt. The timing of these crimes isn't random. Most incidents happen during late afternoons and early evenings, especially over weekends. According to Alderman JP Smith, the City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, this is when motorists are tired, distracted, or relaxed, and valuables are often visible on seats after shopping trips or errands. 'These opportunistic criminals strike when people are perhaps less vigilant after a long day at work or stuck in peak-hour traffic,' Alderman Smith noted. The City also provided some tips to reduce the risk of a smash-and-grab incident. These include: Keeping valuables out of sight and not on seats inside the vehicle – putting them in the boot or underneath the seat, making sure it's not visible Locking all doors and closing windows Being cautious, vigilant, and aware of your surroundings Being wary of people loitering about at traffic lights or intersections Being aware of people attempting to give you pamphlets or sell you goods, as not all are legitimate vendors.
