Bayern Munich stand before PSG in battle of Club World Cup favourites

Straits Timesa day ago
ATLANTA – A glance at the quarter-final line-up for the Club World Cup suggests that whoever comes out on top in the heavyweight last-eight showdown between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich on July 5 will be the favourites to go on and win Fifa's new competition.
Real Madrid can never be ruled out, but the Spanish giants are a work in progress under new coach Xabi Alonso before playing Borussia Dortmund in New Jersey on the same day.
Meanwhile, PSG came to the United States fresh from winning the Uefa Champions League in style in Munich at the end of May, and Luis Enrique's side have eased their way to the quarter-finals despite a slip-up against Brazil's Botafogo in the group stage.
Bayern finished second in their group behind Benfica but the manner with which they disposed of Flamengo in the last 16, with Harry Kane scoring twice in a 4-2 victory, showed that the German champions mean business.
Vincent Kompany's team have netted 16 goals across four matches and may now feel they have a point to prove after falling short in the Champions League – Bayern lost in the last eight in Europe to an Inter Milan team eventually humiliated 5-0 by PSG in the final.
'We followed PSG's season with interest. It was a great story because things were not perfect at the beginning and yet, despite the criticism of them, they kept fighting and believing,' Kompany said.
'But that doesn't change anything for us. We want to win.'
Club World Cup success would cap a promising first year in charge of Bayern for former Belgium defender Kompany, who led them to Bundesliga glory as they reclaimed the domestic title from Bayer Leverkusen.
PSG eventually conquered Europe, but Bayern defeated the French side 1-0 in the league phase of the Champions League back in November.
'We have to try to take the energy and the good feeling into this match. We know it's going to be difficult but we feel like we can beat anyone when we're at our top level,' Kane, who has 41 goals in 50 club appearances since last August, told Bayern's website.
PSG – who lost to Bayern in the Champions League final in 2020 – are fresh from crushing Lionel Messi's Inter Miami 4-0 in the last 16 and the dream of a world title to add to their French and European crowns is very much alive.
'We are having a historic season for our club and we want to extend it in this competition,' said Enrique. 'Our objective is to go as far as possible, but to do that (and reach the final) we still need to come through two ties.'
This will be PSG's 63rd match in all competitions going back to the start of the Ligue 1 season last August, and Enrique is hoping for one last push from his exhausted players before they can enjoy a short summer break.
The build-up to the game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta has been overshadowed by the tragic death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in Spain on July 3.
Four PSG players – Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves and Goncalo Ramos – were all international teammates of Jota's and all played alongside him in the Portugal team that won the Uefa Nations League barely four weeks ago.
Enrique's squad held a long moment's silence before training on July 3 after learning of Jota's death, as did Bayern ahead of their session. AFP

Jul 4, 2025; Orlando, Florida, USA; The Al Hilal FC and Fluminense FC teammates line up during a moment of silence in remembrance of Liverpool F.C. soccer star Diogo Jota and André Silva during a quarterfinal match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at Camping World Stadium. Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images ORLANDO, FLA - Al-Hilal's Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo flew to Portugal for the funeral for their former teammate Diogo Jota after an emotional Club World Cup quarter-final against Fluminense on Friday that saw them break down in tears during the minute's silence. Neves, one of Jota's closest friends, served as a pallbearer for the Liverpool forward who died alongside his younger brother Andre Silva following a car accident in northwestern Spain on Thursday morning when their Lamborghini veered off the road and caught fire. Tributes have continued to pour in for the brothers with footballing greats including Cristiano Ronaldo and Steven Gerrard, joining the Prime Ministers of Portugal and Britain in mourning the loss. Friday's match between Al-Hilal and Fluminense in Orlando began with players and fans observing a minute's silence in memory of the two brothers. Neves, who played with the 28-year-old Jota during their days at Wolverhampton Wanderers, issued a touching tribute on Instagram about an hour before kick-off. "Wherever you are, I know you're going to read this, we've never been one for this sort of thing and maybe now I'll regret it a little, but you know what you mean to me just as much as I know what I am to you," Neves said. "More than a friendship, we're family, and we're not going to stop being family just because you've decided to sign a contract a little further away from us! Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Burnley sign England defender Walker on a two-year deal

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Walker joined City in 2017 and has made over 200 league appearances for them. But manager Pep Guardiola revealed in January that Walker had asked to leave the club at the end of the season. Walker, who won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup with City, joined AC Milan on loan in January, where he made 11 Serie A appearances. The 35-year-old, who has earned 96 England caps, said he joined Burnley after speaking to their manager Scott Parker, who was his teammate at Spurs. Parker guided Burnley back to the English top-flight with a second-place finish in the Championship. "When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at. He's done an amazing job," Walker said in a statement. "I can't wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks (like) an exciting squad." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. All Blacks hold off depleted France 31-27 in Dunedin thriller

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Will Jordan scored a try in each half and Beauden Barrett kicked to perfection as the All Blacks overcame three cancelled tries to claim a nervous 31-27 win over France in the series-opener in Dunedin on Saturday. Fielding only three players from the Six Nations title-deciding win over Scotland, the depleted French gave Scott Robertson's team a huge scare in an entertaining match at sold-out Forsyth-Barr stadium. But a late Barrett penalty proved enough for the All Blacks to hold on, snapping a three-match losing streak against Les Bleus. "Just a typical test match against the French for us," said Jordan, who was denied a hat-trick try by the television match official (TMO). "A couple of errors cost us ... But we showed good composure to finish it off in the end there." The All Blacks lost Sevu Reece to a head-knock less than a minute in when the winger clattered into a French hip, forcing Robertson into a backline rejig and Damian McKenzie to play at fullback off the bench. The French had a better start, with debutant flyhalf Joris Segonds booting a penalty in the seventh minute after winger Gabin Villiere won a turnover penalty. Top stories Swipe. Select. Chastened, the All Blacks hit back hard. A Jordie Barrett try was denied by a knock-on the buildup but minutes later his brothers combined for their first legal try. Scott Barrett charged down a French clearing kick behind the 22-metre line before Beauden put Jordan over at the right corner with a superb, loop pass. McKenzie kept the momentum for the hosts, shrugging off four would-be tacklers with a jinking run to the posts before Tupou Vaa'i barged over to put the All Blacks four points up. The Barrett brothers struck again on the cusp of half-time, this time with centre Jordie touching down at the right corner after quick hands from Beauden and Jordan. The All Blacks' 21-13 halftime lead all but disappeared within minutes of the restart, though, as Rieko Ioane spilled the kick-off ball forward to gift France a scrum deep in attack. Battering away for 16 phases, Segonds spread the ball wide to Villiere who jogged through a gaping hole in the All Blacks' line on the right side. The try-fest continued as Jordan burst through two defenders to cross for his second, with Beauden Barrett again setting up the chance. Fresh off the bench, France lock Cameron Woki then crossed under the posts to peg back the All Blacks again. The pendulum swung back to the hosts with Villiere shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. A minute later, All Blacks centre Billy Proctor stretched an arm over the line -- only for the try to be cancelled as replays showed an illegal grounding of the ball. The undermanned French soon buckled again, with Jordan crossing for his hat-trick try in the 63rd minute. But it was erased by the TMO who spotted prop Pasilio Tosi obstructing a French defender in the buildup. France will have reinforcements for the second and third tests in Wellington and Hamilton. France's debutant lock Tyler Duguid said his team performed well after being widely written off. "It feels good. There was a lot of outside noise that we'd come out, we'd take 50 (points)," he said. "But I thought we showed a lot of spirit." REUTERS
