Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead

Groves wins 20th Tour stage, Pogacar maintains lead Kaden Groves celebrates winning stage 20 of the Tour de France. Photo: Reuters Alpecin rider Kaden Groves won stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday after a long-range escape that saw the Australian finish well ahead of the big guns. Runaway overall race leader Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead over Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Sunday's 21st and final stage in Paris. The Team UAE rider has a 4min 24sec advantage heading into what could be a tricky finale, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, but featuring three ascents of the cobbled streets of Montmartre. The champion-in-waiting was left shaking his head after almost getting taken down in a fall 500m from the line on Saturday, as lashing rain made the roads hazardous on the run into Pontarlier. This was a third stage win for Alpecin after Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel took the two opening wins. "They gave me a free role in the final days," Groves said after both Philipsen and Van der Poel pulled out. "I'm going to enjoy this one and celebrate with my team and enjoy the Champs tomorrow." Just 158 riders crossed the rolling hills at the foot of the Jura, and many looked haggard after the fast racing in the Alps. So along the Swiss border, most of the peloton seemed happy to let an escape get a 7-minute lead after an exhausting slog that started July 5. (AFP)

Venus Williams' comeback ends in the last 16

Venus Williams' comeback ends in the last 16 Venus Williams is looking forward to next month's Cincinnati Open after bowing out at the DC Open in Washington. File photo: NurPhoto via AFP Venus Williams' return to tennis came to an abrupt end in the last 16 of the ATP/WTA DC Open on Thursday, with the veteran American losing to Poland's Magdalena Frech in straight sets. The 45-year-old seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, playing this week for the first time in 16 months, had become the oldest woman to win a WTA match in more than two decades with Tuesday's first round win over Peyton Stearns. But Williams found the going harder against fifth seed Frech in Thursday's third round clash, losing 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 13 minutes. Williams said she was nonetheless satisfied with her return to competitive tennis. "I had so much fun," Williams said. "Not the result I wanted, but I got to play a lot of matches, definitely a plus. I couldn't be happier. "I ran out of gas today to have fell short. But I know I can play better and I know I will play better," added Williams, who is due to play in next month's Cincinnati Open after being handed a wild card into the event. Frech will face third seed Elena Rybakina in Friday's quarter-finals. She had seized the early initiative with a dominant first set performance, breaking Williams in the fifth game and again in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead, before holding out to close the set. Williams was soon in trouble in the second set, blasting a routine smash well beyond the baseline to give Frech two break points in the first game, which she pounced on to lead 1-0. Both players held on to their next service game, but Williams was unable to break Frech's serve in the fourth game as the world number 24 took a 3-1 lead. Frech's shot variation continued to cause Williams problems in the next game and two wild long forehands from the veteran saw her surrender another break to go 4-1 down. With the game slipping away, Williams loosened up and began to find her range to break back for 4-2. The rally was fleeting as Frech broke again in the seventh for a 5-2 lead and then held to seal victory. (AFP)

Venus Williams to compete at DC Open, ending hiatus

Venus Williams to compete at DC Open, ending hiatus Williams last played competitively at the Miami Open in March 2024, losing in the first-round. File photo: USA Today Sports via Reuters Venus Williams will make her return from a 16-month layoff at this week's DC Open, and the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion said Sunday she was not sure of anything beyond that. The 45-year-old American overcame a serious health scare last year and after enjoying a visit to Wimbledon decided to accept a wildcard into the US capital tournament, the first hardcourt tuneup for the US Open. "I think I know what I want to do, but I don't always want to talk about it," Williams said. "I'm just here for now. And who knows? Maybe there is more. I hold my cards close, but at the moment, I'm focused just on this." Williams will open against 23-year-old American Peyton Stearns, ranked 34th in the world. Stearns won her only WTA title last year on clay at Rabat. The older sister of 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams has not played since a first-round loss at Miami last year. "My personal goal is to have fun I think right now and enjoy the moment, not put too much pressure on myself," Venus Williams said. "I don't know if I define success at this moment in any sort of way other than believing in myself and sticking to my process. That's not easy to do, especially after a layoff. So those are my goals." Venus Williams, the 2000 Sydney Olympic singles champion, has won five Wimbledon singles titles and two US Open crowns. The most recent of her 49 WTA titles came in 2019 at the Taiwan Open. That was the last year she played a full tour schedule. "I definitely feel I'll play well," Williams said. "I'm still the same player. I'm a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand. "So it's about hitting big and actually putting it in. So this will be my effort. Put it in the court. That's my main goal." A year ago, tennis was far from the most important thing on her mind. "Yeah, my health journey was very scary. You know, this time a year ago I was preparing to go to surgery," she said. "There was no way for me to play tennis or play the US Open... I was just trying to get healthy. "In this last year, I have been through a lot physically, so to come back and be able to play and hopefully enjoy myself is a great opportunity." (AFP)
