Excitement over fleet's arrival washes over sailors

An officer of the visiting People's Liberation Army Navy fleet said on Thursday he felt a surge of excitement over how nice and friendly locals were in welcoming its arrival.
The fleet, led by the Shandong aircraft carrier, is in town for five days, with some of the vessels open to public visits over the weekend.
Colonel Wu Kang said at the SAR government's welcoming ceremony that more than 700 sailors on board the vessels lined up in a way that showed the words "national security is good for our home" in Chinese.
"[We] demonstrated our deep blessings for patriotism and love for Hong Kong, as well as our well wishes for the compatriots in Hong Kong," he said after the ceremony held on Stonecutters Island.
The colonel described the fleet as an active powerful naval brigade that can traverse thousands of miles and engage in long-distance battles.
He said patriots from Hong Kong and Macau will be invited to board Shandong on Thursday night and that sailors will meet local students on Friday to talk about national defence.
Wu went on to say that sailors will also get together with Hong Kong-based PLA soldiers and the SAR's disciplined-services personnel for activities such as as football and seminars.
Students and teachers from the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers Wong Cho Bau Secondary School and Fukien Secondary School were at the ceremony.
"I'm very excited and proud that the fleet's in town," a student told RTHK.
"I'm deeply aware of the strengths of the navy and our country's national defence efforts, so I can't help but feel a strong sense of national pride."
A teacher said the activities are important opportunities to promote national security and patriotic education.

More than one-third of stranded cetaceans found in Hong Kong waters and on beaches last year were linked to human activities, an NGO has said. The Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong (OPCFHK), together with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), handled a total of 41 cetacean strandings in 2024, the NGO said in a statement on Thursday. A total of 14 stranding cases were linked to human activities, with six cases directly caused by them. 'Cetaceans were found to be entangled in ropes, affected by trauma from boat strikes, suffered from infections such as pneumonia, parasites and bacteria, or affected by other internal conditions,' the OPCFHK said. One example cited in the report was two Chinese white dolphin carcasses – an adult female and a stillborn neonate – that were found near Pui O, Lantau, in July 2024. 'Necropsy findings of the adult dolphin demonstrated bruising and haematoma, which suggested potential blunt force trauma indicative of possible boat strike,' the NGO said. The report also mentioned a case of a male adult Longman's beaked whale found stranded on a beach near Shek Tsai Po, Lantau, on November 30, 2024. Despite rescue efforts, the whale died. A preliminary necropsy found a synthetic bag inside its stomach, while the cause of death still awaits further examination, the report said. 'Cetaceans play a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems,' said Paulo Pong, chair of the OPCFHK and Ocean Park Corporation. 'Understanding factors such as the causes of injury and death, feeding habits, pollutant exposure and genetic relationships will enable us to formulate more effective solutions and responses for the survival of cetaceans in Hong Kong waters.' The OPCFHK urges members of the public to adopt a plastic-free lifestyle and not litter, especially in the sea or on beaches. It also asks people who watch dolphins not to harass or touch them. In July 2023, a whale died with a cut on its back, possibly caused by a propeller after its appearance attracted many people who hoped to see the animal for themselves, with boats offering rides to approach it. The OPCHK has been working with the AFCD to handle marine life strandings in Hong Kong since 2006. More than 650 cetacean strandings have been handled in Hong Kong over the past 19 years, with between 20 and 50 cases reported each year.

File photo: Xinhua Every Chinese should contribute to national defence in their own way, a naval officer attached to the Shandong aircraft carrier said on Friday, as youths in Hong Kong learnt more about the fleet on the second day of its SAR visit. Lian Huiliang, a crew member aboard the country's home-grown aircraft carrier, also stressed the importance of developing a defence shield for the nation. "The development of our national defence is to protect everyone, as well as safeguard our national security and territorial integrity," she said after a national defence-themed lecture. "I think all Chinese should do their part in contributing to national defence." The session, delivered by the fleet's officers at the Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks on Stonecutters Island, was attended by teachers and pupils of secondary schools in Hong Kong and members of youth uniformed groups. They got an introductory lesson on Shandong's operations and learnt about the different duties of People's Liberation Army Navy personnel based on their colour-coded uniforms. A form two pupil who attended the session told reporters he was most interested in the work of officers responsible for loading the aircraft with missiles. "This is an important part of attacking enemies... I know that there is a group of people who are attending to our personal safety. I feel very proud," he said. Another form two student said she was glad for the chance to learn about the domestically-built aircraft carrier. "I remembered the sharing part about medical professionals the most because I hope to become a healthcare worker when I grow up," she said.
