Nasser Al Attiyah wins his 17th Jordan Rally title
The success took the iconic Škoda Fabia RS driver to a record 90th career MERC rally win, as he closes in on an unprecedented 20th regional title since 2003. The new partnership with his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera has a 100% winning record with the duo now taking victories at the opening four rounds of this year's FIA Middle East Rally Championship in Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and now Jordan.
Al Attiyah said, 'I am so happy to win again here in Jordan for the 17th time. This means a lot to me. This year we have won every rally so far. It feels like a good year, leading the Middle East Championship and leading the W2RC. For this rally, I will give it 10 out of 10. Today, we controlled the pace and tried to make a gap in case we had a puncture.'
Qatar's Abdulaziz Al Kuwari and his Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore tried different set-ups with their Citroen C3 but struggled to match the pace of the leading duo on this occasion. They did enough to round off the podium places.
Abdullah Al Rawahi and his Jordanian co-driver Ata Al Hmoud maintained the pressure on Al Attiyah throughout day one but a time-consuming puncture delayed the Omani on Saturday's opening Panorama stage and a second issue on stage 10 proved too much for the 2023 regional champion. He finished second overall.
Qatar's Nasser Khalifa Al Atya continued his run of consistent form to bring his Ford Fiesta to the Dead Sea finish in sixth overall with co-driver Ziad Chehab. That result was sufficient for the Qatari veteran to seal success in the inaugural FIA Master MERC Championship with two rounds to run.

Guardiola wants to bring Ter Stegen to Man City: Reports
dpa Madrid Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to bring Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to his team, according to several media reports. Ter Stegen, currently at Barcelona, is Guardiola's preferred candidate to replace current starting keeper Ederson, who is flirting with a move to Saudi Arabia or the Serie A, the newspaper El Nacional said on Thursday. According to the reports, first talks over the transfer have already been held. 'Guardiola appreciates Ter Stegen's style of play and experience, especially his qualities in building up the game, his tactical intelligence and his calmness in goal - all qualities that fit perfectly with his style,' El Nacional wrote. Last week, Spanish newspapers said that Ter Stegen is to be only the third-choice goalkeeper at Barcelona in the upcoming season. The Sport newspaper said that coach Hansi Flick has already told the German that Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny are the first two options ahead of him. Szczesny stood in for Ter Stegen after the latter suffered a major knee injury in September and was sidelined for about seven months. The Mundo Deportivo newspaper, meanwhile, said that Flick isn't even counting on the German goalkeeper for the new season. Ter Stegen reportedly feels at home in Barcelona and in principle wants to fulfil his contract until 2028. However, due to the 2026 World Cup, he can't afford to spend a season on the bench and risk losing his starting position at the Germany national team. As Barcelona started the pre-season preparations, Ter Stegen has only completed individual sessions in the fitness room. The official reason for his absence from team training is back issues. Chelsea, Manchester United, Galatasaray and Monaco are reportedly interested in signing Ter Stegen.

Jude Bellingham could be out until October following shoulder surgery
PA Media/dpa London Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham has undergone shoulder surgery. It was reported in May that Bellingham would have surgery following this summer's Club World Cup and on Wednesday, Real confirmed the procedure had taken place to treat a recurring dislocation of his left shoulder. The surgery is reportedly set to sideline him until October, but the Spanish club did not confirm any length of absence, saying only that Bellingham would now 'begin a period of rehabilitation prior to his return to recovery work'. Real said the surgery had been performed by Drs Manuel Leyes and Andrew Wallace, under the supervision of Real Madrid Medical Services. Bellingham is now set to miss the start of Real's LaLiga campaign and also England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia in September. The 22-year-old and his Real team-mates came home empty-handed from the Club World Cup to round off a disappointing campaign where they finished runners-up to Barcelona in the league and fell to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals. Carlo Ancelotti, who stood down as Real coach at the end of the regular season but before the Club World Cup, highlighted the issue with Bellingham's shoulder back in December 2023 and said at the time: 'The shoulder is very particular.

Yamal gets coveted No 10 shirt at Barca and signs until 2031
dpa Barcelona Lamine Yamal signed his Barcelona contract extension until 2031 on Wednesday and from now on will play with the number 10 shirt former greats like Lionel Messi wore. Yamal was presented the prestigious shirt by club president Joan Laportas after penning the renewal with his boyhood club, which was already announced in May, in the presence of his family and the club leadership. Forward Yamal inherits the shirt from Ansu Fati, who has left for French league club Monaco. Messi wore it 2008-2021, and like Messi Yamal previously donned the number 19 shirt. Yamal's first professional contract signed in 2023 was limited to three years because of his young age. He turned 18 on Sunday. 'This is the latest step in the La Masia starlet's rise to the very top. By taking on a number of such symbolic weight in world football, and nowhere less so than at Barça, Lamine is once again showing that responsibility doesn't faze him,' Barca said. Yamal joined Barca's famous La Masia academy at the age of five and made his first-team debut in April 2023 when he was 15. He has since grown into one of the biggest stars of the game. He won Euro 2024 with Spain and last season a second Spanish league title, the Copa del Rey and Super Cup with Barca. Yamal has 25 goals and 28 assists in 106 Barca matches, according to the club website, 18 goals and 21 assists alone last season.
