It's Ledecky vs. McIntosh in the 800 freestyle, the centerpiece of the world championships
The race is one of six finals on Saturday, but it overshadows everything else on Day 7. The championships wrap up on Sunday.
Ledecky
of the United States holds the world record (8 minutes, 04.12 seconds) set earlier this year. The 28-year-old American has dominated the distance for a decade and has already won gold in the 1,500 in Singapore. She also has a bronze in the 400.
Ledecky, 28, has won nine Olympic gold medals — the most decorated female in history — and her first gold was in 2012 in the London Olympics in the 800.
McIntosh
is an 18-year-old Canadian. She's already won three golds in Singapore and she swam just a second off Ledecky's time earlier this year. If anyone is to dethrone Ledecky, it's McIntosh.
This would be McIntosh's fourth gold as she goes for five individual golds in the worlds, a feat only achieved the legendary American swimmer Michael Phelps.
The other five finals are: the women's 50 butterfly; the men's 50 free; the women's 200 backstroke; the men's 100 butterfly; and mixed 4x100 freestyle relay.
The Americans and Australians have each won five gold medals through six days. The Americans lead in overall medals with 20, although their performance
has been lackluster
and slowed after much of the team came down with a case of
'acute gastroenteritis'
in training camp in Thailand.

How Commanders view Terry McLaurin's stunning trade request
Commanders coach Dan Quinn is taking Terry McLaurin's trade request in stride. Quinn told reporters that McLaurin told him of the demand before it went public Thursday and, essentially, called it business as usual for Washington. 'We love Terry and are really glad he's here and hope he's practicing soon,' Quinn told reporters of the star receiver, who went on the physically unable to perform list after holding out the first four days of camp. 'But I also understand the business side of things. That's what they're working through. I love coaching him.' McLaurin is considered a hold-in, with contract extension talks having gone nowhere to this point. Quinn said there was no need to address the situation with the team. Dan Quinn isn't making a big deal out of the trade request. AP 'Players today are more aware of contracts than they used to be,' Quinn said. 'They recognize that's the business part. For the team, we're just rocking. For Terry, the trade request, that's part of normal business that's happening around the NFL. We understand it. 'This group is tight and they're focused on what they have to do.' The Commanders are reportedly reluctant to pay McLaurin an amount commensurate with the league's top receivers since he will be 31 when a new deal begins. Thus, according to ESPN's John Keim, the two sides are far apart in negotiations. Terry McLaurin is doing a hold-in. AP McLaurin is coming off a season-high 13 touchdowns and has hit the 1,000-yard mark for five straight seasons. He was a major part of the Commanders' NFC title game run that marked the franchise's best season since winning the Super Bowl in 1991. He is currently attending meetings and walkthroughs while rehabbing an ankle injury that's been a nagging issue since late in the season. 'I try to avoid judging it,' Quinn said. 'I recognize players are trying to set themselves and their families up, so I try not to put myself in that spot. It's too easy to say, 'Man, if I had that much I would be this or that.' So I don't go there. I try to support him as best I can, but we don't discuss the finance part of things.'

India lead up to 281 after Jaiswal hundred at the Oval
LONDON (AP) — Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal reached another century and was dropped again as India's lead over England reached 281 runs by tea on day three Saturday of the fifth test at the Oval. Jaiswal made 118 after he was dropped three times. Ravindra Jadeja was on 26 with Dhruv Jurel on 25 and India was 304-6 in its second innings. India added 115 runs in the middle session for the loss of captain Shubman Gill, Karun Nair and Jaiswal. Gill was out to the first delivery after lunch, plumb lbw to an in-swinger by Gus Atkinson. With 11 in his last bat of the series, Gill finished with 754 runs, passing Graham Gooch's 752 in 1990 for the most by any batter in an India-England series. In the same over, Nair's index finger was crunched by Josh Tongue and it was taped up. But Nair, in obvious discomfort, never settled. He was dropped on 12 and eventually out for 17, his glove nicking behind Atkinson's extra bounce. By then, Jaiswal already had his hundred, his second of the series, fourth against England, and sixth of his career. He turned his 127th ball faced to point and was celebrating before he ran the single; leaping, running, and shaping his fingers into a heart. Jaiswal played frantically for his 51 on Friday night and was dropped on 20 and 40. He was composed on Saturday, happy in the morning to let nightwatchman Akash Deep cut loose for a career-best 66 with 12 boundaries in their third-wicket stand of 107. But as the day clouded over, England's seam attack, depleted of the injured Chris Woakes, discovered some nasty movement and Atkinson and Tongue came alive in the afternoon. After drinks, Jaiswal was dropped on 110 by Ben Duckett at leg slip. It was the sixth drop in the innings, England's most in a home test since 2006 when it spilled six against Pakistan, also at the Oval. Jaiswal added only eight more runs when he fell tamely a half-hour before tea for 118. He ramped Tongue straight to Jamie Overton at backward point. Jaiswal used up 164 balls and hit 14 boundaries and, on Friday evening, two sixes. But he also used his luck to put India in a position to give England a tough chase. Jadeja was on 24 when he was smashed on the foot by a Tongue yorker and given out, which was overturned on review. He and Jurel continued the four-plus-runs-an-over pace that Deep and Jaiswal launched in the morning. Atkinson had 3-99 and Tongue 2-100 at tea. ___ AP cricket:

Serie A 2025-26 season — Schedule, leading scorers, table, USMNT players
A league once in the firm grip of a black-and-white dynasty has become more open, but the blue bloods still dominate Serie A. With four different winners over the last six seasons, Italy's top division has been a lot more fun for neutrals in that period. Actually, it's been more fun for everyone but Juventus. MORE — All-time Serie A winners list This season, it'll be Napoli trying to repeat as champions and form a mini-dynasty of its own after winning twice in the last three years. Plenty will chase Antonio Conte's team, with American stars and star imports from Canada (Jonathan David) and Mexico (Santiago Gimenez) giving chase. Below is everything you need to prepare for the 2025-26 Serie A season. When does the 2025-26 Serie A season begin? The Serie A season begins August 23, 2025 and runs through May 24, 2026. Who will win the 2025-26 scudetto? Napoli have won two of the last three scudetti as Serie A's top team, but there's no longer a black-and-white chokehold on the shield winners. Both Milan teams and Napoli have won since Juventus' last title, as The Old Lady saw its nine-year run atop Serie A end when Inter Milan claimed the 2020-21 scudetto. The oddsmakers have Napoli and Inter Milan as the most likely to win it all this season, but Juventus and AC Milan are in the fight and not long shots at all. Even AS Roma isn't far off the favorites. Who were relegated and promoted last season? Empoli, Venezia, and Monza were relegated after the 2024-25 season. Their places will be taken by familiar name Sassuolo as well as Pisa and Cremonese. What have been the big Serie A transfers this summer? AC Milan sold Tijjani Reijnders to Man City and Theo Hernandez to Saudi Arabia, bringing in Torino's Samuele Ricci and Brighton's Pervis Estupinan on permanent transfers, also adding Luka Modric on a free transfer. Napoli have been active in plotting their title defense, adding PSV Eindhoven winger Noa Lang and Bologna center back Sam Beukema for decent fees in addition to signing Kevin De Bruyne on a free transfer. Victor Osimhen was sold to Galatasaray for big money. Inter brought in Luis Henrique from Marseille and center forward Ange-Yoan Bonny from Parma. Atalanta sold Mateo Retegui to Saudi Arabia for huge money and spread the proceeds around the world including a move for Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana. Juve signed Jonathan David on a free transfer, and are bringing back Francisco Conceicao on a permanent deal. They also again raided Fiorentina for a forward. This time it's Nico Gonzalez. Roma sold Enzo Le Fee to Sunderland and brought in Flamengo's Wesley and Lens' Neil El Aynaoui, also signing Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton. Como continued to build with moves for Man City's Maximo Perrone and Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn. Another big-money deal? Bologna sold Dan Ndoye to Nottingham Forest. What's the latest for Christian Pulisic and other USMNT players in Serie A? There are still four Americans in Serie A, and all are with the blue bloods. Christian Pulisic remains one of, if not the top player at AC Milan, where he's joined by midfielder Yunus Musah. There was some talk that Timothy Weah could leave Juventus, but at the moment he's still on the books at The Old Lady along with Weston McKennie. Serie A goals leaders — Who will win the Capocannoniere? Inter Milan and Argentina star Lautaro Martinez is the favorite to score the most goals in Serie A. The identity of the Capocannoniere — 'head gunner' — could also be newcomer Jonathan David of Juventus, while Marcus Thuram, Moise Keane, Romelu Lukaku, and Dusan Vlahovic see their names high up the odds table. Mexico's Santiago Gimenez and Roma's Artem Dovbyk are among the dark horses. Serie A table - Standings for the 2025-26 season AC Milan AS Roma Atalanta Bologna Cagliari Como Cremonese Fiorentina Genoa Hellas Verona Inter Milan Juventus Lazio Lecce Napoli Parma Pisa Sassuolo Torino Udinese
