Sikkim: Stranded tourists, family members of army personnel airlifted
However, till reports last came in, there was no trace of the six persons, including a Lt Col and his family, who went missing after a landslide hit an army camp at Chaten in North Sikkim late Sunday evening.
Search operations also continued near Munshithang in North Sikkim where nine tourists went missing after the vehicle, in which they were travelling, plunged into the River Teesta on May 29.
'Two MI-17 V5 helicopters airlifted 34 stranded individuals from Chaten to Pakyong Greenfield Airport. Among those rescued were seven family members of Army personnel and 27 tourists. Injured personnel were also onboard and are currently receiving necessary medical treatment. This was the first successful aerial evacuation carried out under the current emergency response plan,' said the statement issued by the Sikkim government.
While around 1,800 stranded tourists were rescued from Lachung on Monday, around 130 tourists were stranded at Lachen. The Indian Army's 112 Brigade established a foot route between Lachen and Chaten. Stranded tourists from Lachen were brought to Chaten from where they were airlifted along with family members of army personnel.
'The state government has outlined a strategic evacuation plan whereby tourists from Lachen will be moved to Chaten via the foot route and subsequently airlifted, depending on weather conditions,' said the statement.
On Tuesday, a 23-member team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), equipped with hi-tech gadgets to carry out search and rescue operations, reached Chaten where police and army were already carrying out search operations. Three bodies were recovered on Monday.
'The NDRF team from Pakyong airport reached Chaten by helicopters at 8 am and started a search and rescue operation along with army and police,' said Arun Thatal, sub-divisional officer of Chungthang in Mangan district.
On Tuesday, the Sikkim government declared the damages caused by incessant rain in Mangan district from May 28 as a disaster under section 22 (2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Police on Monday said among those missing were Lt Col Pritpal Sandhu, his wife Squadron Leader (retd) Arati B Sandhu and their daughter Amaria Sandhu, Subedar Dharamveer Singh, Sepoy Sainudheen PK and Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary.
The three deceased were identified as Havildar Lakhwindar Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur and porter Abhishek Lakhada.

Encounter breaks out in J&K's Kulgam; operation underway
SRINAGAR: An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Akhal forest area of Devsar in south Kashmir's Kulgam district on Friday evening. A joint team of personnel from the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police SOG had launched an anti-terror operation following inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. Holed-up ultras opened fire at the search party, triggering a gunfight, a police spokesperson said. The operation continued till the time of filing this report. Earlier in the day, J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat and IGP (Kashmir Range) VK Birdi had visited Kulgam to assess the security situation. DGP Prabhat held a high-level operational review meeting with GOC Victor Force and senior officers of the Army and police, directing them to 'analyse and reassess existing strategies and recalibrate the counter-terrorism offensive' to eliminate Pakistani terrorists. The DGP also toured the DH Pora, Devsar and Kund areas during his visit.

A fierce gun battle was underway between security forces and terrorists after a joint team of security forces launched an anti terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district today. Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament that the three were identified as Pakistani terrorists who had killed innocent tourists in cold blood in Pahalgam on April 22. On Thursday, two more terrorists were killed near the line of control in Poonch. Police said that the duo had infiltrated from Pakistan and were intercepted soon after they entered the Indian side. Today's encounter in Kulgam forests is part of an ongoing offensive against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said reinforcement has been rushed to the area as terrorists appeared to be hiding in a forest area. The army has also confirmed that contact has been established and the operation is underway.

It may take one year to get death certificate of youths killed in Russia-Ukraine war
The anxious wait of the families of Indian nationals to get death certificates of their dear ones who died fighting for the Russian armed forces in the war with Ukraine will be longer than anticipated. Many had been allegedly tricked by promises of lucrative jobs in the Russian armed forces. According to the latest update, as many as 13 Indian nationals recruited by Russia as mercenaries in the war with Ukraine remain in the Russian armed forces. However, 12 of them have been reported missing by the Russian authorities, said Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in Parliament. Although the Russian authorities have been urged to provide an update on all the remaining/missing individuals and ensure their safety and early discharge, a good number of them are reported to have been killed in the war. Ajith Kolassery, Chief Executive Officer of NoRKA-Roots, said Binil Babu, 32, one of the two youths from Thrissur forcibly enlisted by the Russian Army, was killed in a shell attack on the Russia-Ukraine warfront in January and had been reportedly included on the missing list. 'Recently, during a visit to Russia, I personally enquired about the possibility of confirming the death and issuing a death certificate at the earliest. However, it will take at least one year to get it confirmed and for issuing the death certificate,' said Mr. Kolassery. As per official information, there were 127 Indian nationals in the Russian armed forces, of which the services of 98 had been discontinued as a result of sustained engagement between the Indian and Russian governments. However, it is assumed that more Indians, including Keralites, had been recruited to the Russian armed forces as mercenaries. Since the majority of them were not on the warfront without imminent danger, their families refuse to come up with plea to rescue them, said Mr. Kolassery. Earlier, another Keralite, identified as Sandeep Chandran, 36, from Thrissur, had died in shelling in Ukraine in August 2024.
