Orientation programme for women entrepreneurs on millet-based food ventures

A three-day training-cum-workshop on running millets-based food ventures, organised by the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College (SRC) was inaugurated in Tiruchi on Wednesday.
Over 30 women from various walks of life signed up for the June 11-13 programme that was inaugurated by P. Rajappan, president, Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (TIDITSSIA). R. Bhargavi, chairperson, MPR Foods, and college principal M.V. Alli were present.
The programme is financially supported by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology under the Dissemination of Innovative Technology scheme, and is aimed at empowering women from rural self-help groups, farmers, unemployed youth, and students with knowledge and practical skills in millet processing, product development, and entrepreneurship.
In his inaugural address on financial support systems and micro loans, Mr. Raja briefed the participants on the finer details of running a food enterprise, from seeking bank loans and selection of machinery, to selling the products.
'Very often, a lack of advertising and marketing affects small ventures. Aspiring entrepreneurs must learn about their product thoroughly, so that they can answer queries from potential investors and customers confidently,' said Mr. Raja.
He advised small businesses against seeking loans without financial preparation for repayment. 'Do not get into business just to avail the grants that are being given with a bank loan. The burden of debt can affect the entire family if you do not repay it on time,' he said.
The second session of the day featured a talk by Ms. Bhargavi about processing of millets.
An industrial visit to MPR Foods was organised on June 12. V. Kavitha, head and assistant professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietitics, Jamal Mohamed College, and S. Devisri, assistant professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, SRC, will deliver talk on June 13 on emerging trends in millet processing.

MADURAI: Delays in the execution of projects under the AMRUT scheme and the resulting setback to road works dominated the corporation council meeting held in Madurai on Tuesday, with councillors expressing concern over labour and vehicle shortages hampering civic projects and blaming the contract workers and officials for delaying the project across the city. Raising the issue, opposition floor leader and Ward 64 councillor Solai M Raja pointed out that the Periyar drinking water scheme, which is expected to be completed by December 2025, is progressing at a sluggish pace. 'Several road works sanctioned for completion by December this year are also facing delays due to the slow progress of water pipeline works. In some areas, roads have been newly laid but are now being dug up again for pipeline installations,' he said. Multiple councillors and zonal chairpersons echoed Raja's concerns, urging the city corporation to hold contractors accountable and expedite the ongoing works. They emphasised that the delay in AMRUT projects is not only stalling road infrastructure but also affecting public convenience.

Chennai: Former AIADMK minister Shanmuganathan's son, Raja Shanmuganathan, who is also a councillor in Tuticorin, was intercepted and arrested at Chennai airport in connection with a ₹17 crore cheating case, moments before boarding a flight to Malaysia. A lookout circular was pending against Raja Shanmuganathan. He is AIADMK's 59th ward councillor and Thoothukudi Corporation's opposition leader, and faces a case of for cheating his sister of ₹17 crore by misusing her property under the pretext of offering company shares. In her complaint, Ponnarasi Ashokkumar, 38, said her brother Raja and his wife Anusha lured her into investing in their company, Omeena Pharma Distributors Pvt Ltd, by promising her 16% equity. To facilitate this, they mortgaged securities and bonds belonging to her late husband, and pledged her two-acre land in Sriperumbudur. Using these assets, they secured a loan of ₹11 crore in the name of the company, which was later diverted to another company — Ashun Exim — owned by Raja. Raja also made Ponnarasi to invest in a quarry business named Golden Blue Metals Pvt Ltd in Thoothukudi. She allegedly handed over 300 sovereigns of gold jewellery, which Raja pledged to raise funds. Using these funds, he reportedly purchased around 40 acres of land in Thoothukudi, and registered it in his own name. Investigations revealed that instead of honouring the agreement to share profits or provide equity, Raja and Anusha forged documents to illegally transfer the company's shares to Raja. They fabricated a resignation letter in Ponnarasi's name and uploaded it to the Registrar of Companies (ROC), removing her from her position as director of Golden Blue Metals Pvt Ltd and appointing Anusha in her place. Based on Ponnarasi's complaint, the central crime branch registered a case and began investigations. Police also issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Raja. Raja was intercepted at the Chennai International Airport On June 10 and was taken into custody for inquiry. He was subsequently arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

1 2 Bhubaneswar: By the time Raja arrives, the air in Odisha is thick with more than just festivity—it's filled with the nostalgic aroma of pithas wafting through kitchens, shops, and street corners. Pithas, once painstakingly prepared at home over days, are now enjoying a vibrant city-wide revival—not just as festive delicacies but as the centrepiece of a booming seasonal economy. With busy lifestyles and shrinking kitchen time, many urban families — especially working women — now prefer to buy these festive delicacies rather than prepare them at home. "Our mothers and grandmothers spent days preparing for Raja. With work and family commitments, it's hard to do that now. But thanks to these shops, we still get the same flavours and nostalgia," said Monalisa Mohanty, a nurse at a private hospital. Several sweetshops, restaurants, and dedicated pitha stalls are offering a delightful spread of traditional cakes, including the richly baked poda pitha, manda, kakara, arisa, muan pitha, chhunchipatra pitha, chakuli pitha, and more. "Like every year, this year too, the sales of pithas have been phenomenal. On the first day of the Raja festival—Saturday alone—we did business worth Rs 2.87 lakh. By Sunday afternoon, we had crossed Rs 1 lakh in sales. We have prepared assorted pitha packets, which are in high demand," said Sabyasachi Kar, manager of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation's (OTDC) Panthaniwas in Bhubaneswar. While poda pitha is priced between Rs 200 and Rs 400 per kilogram, other sweets are sold per piece, making them accessible to a wider range of buyers. For women entrepreneurs, Raja has also opened up new opportunities. Lopamudra Dash, who runs a home-based pitha venture in the Unit-IV area, said, "What started as a hobby during the lockdown has now become my main source of income during festivals. I got over 150 pre-orders this Raja. Many women like me, who know how to make pithas but did not see it as a business, are now tapping into this demand." Even large hotels and restaurants have caught the Raja fever. Many have curated special Odia food festivals, offering traditional thalis and pitha platters. "For us, it is not only business but a way to honour Odia heritage," said Anurag Jena, manager of a popular city hotel.
