Houston Rockets' Fred VanVleet Elected NBPA President; Vows To Advocate For NBA Players
Rockets' Fred VanVleet (X)
Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet has been elected President of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), the official labor union representing NBA players, the NBPA announced today.
The 31-year-old veteran, chosen by his fellow players, will begin a four-year term effective immediately, taking over leadership of the organization that represents the voices and rights of NBA athletes both on and off the court.
'It's truly an honor to be elected as President of the NBPA by my peers, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for the best interest of all the members," said VanVleet in a statement released by the NBPA.
'With a deep appreciation for the complexities and challenges players face on all levels of their NBA journeys, I am committed to approaching this role with the passion, dignity, and dedication every player deserves."
As NBPA president, VanVleet will oversee key responsibilities including negotiating collective bargaining agreements, filing player grievances, and educating players on benefits and post-career opportunities. The role places him at the forefront of shaping the future of NBA labor relations and player empowerment.
VanVleet succeeds CJ McCollum, who has held the position since 2021. McCollum will remain involved in an advisory capacity.
'It's been a privilege to serve on the NBPA Executive Committee for the past seven years and uniquely shape the business of our game," said McCollum.
'I am encouraged by the future of the PA under Fred's leadership, as he has earned the basketball community's respect and has proven he is ready for this next step. I look forward to supporting him as we continue building a stronger Association that serves past, present, and future generations of players."
VanVleet's Journey: From Undrafted to Union Leader
VanVleet brings a unique perspective to the presidency, shaped by an unlikely rise in professional basketball. After going undrafted in 2016 out of Wichita State, he signed with the Toronto Raptors and spent time in the G League before earning a permanent role on the main roster.

He eventually played a key role in the Raptors' 2019 NBA Championship run, became an NBA All-Star, and is now the highest-paid undrafted player in league history. Over his nine-year career with Toronto and now Houston, VanVleet has averaged 14.9 points and 5.7 assists per game.
Beyond the hardwood, VanVleet has established himself as a leader and advocate. In 2016, he launched the VanVleet Family Foundation, dedicated to increasing access and opportunity for youth through education, athletics, and career development.

IND vs ENG: 'Jofra Archer was seeing highlights of Sourav Ganguly waving shirt' - Ben Stokes reveals after win over India at Lord's
Ben Stokes (Photo by Sahil Malhotra/ in London: England captain Ben Stokes on Sunday added a touch of humour and history to the drama at Lord's after a thrilling 22-run win over India in the third Test. Reflecting on the occasion, Stokes revealed that Jofra Archer had been watching highlights of Sourav Ganguly famously waving his shirt on the Lord's balcony, an iconic scene from India's iconic NatWest final win in 2002. 'Archer was seein highlights of Ganguly waving shirt. He thought that was World Cup final. I told him no, the World Cup final we won,' Stokes told reporters, referring to England's 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, also played at Lord's on the same date, July 14. Chasing 193, India were bowled out for 170 despite a valiant effort from Ravindra Jadeja , who remained unbeaten on 61. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Starting the day at 58/4, India needed something special, but quick wickets in the morning all but sealed their fate. KL Rahul stood firm for a gritty 39, but his dismissal to Stokes, via a successful DRS, dented India's chase. Rishabh Pant, visibly in pain due to a finger injury, was castled by a sharp Archer delivery that turned the tide definitively in England's favour. Stokes revealed he had a 'gut feeling' about opening the day with Archer: 'Had that gut feeling. That's why opened the bowling with Jofra Archer and he swung the game for us,' he said. Poll Do you believe India can bounce back in the fourth Test? Yes, definitely! No, England are too strong. Both Stokes and Archer picked up five wickets in the match, delivering under pressure on a worn surface. Shoaib Bashir fittingly claimed the final wicket, sparking jubilant scenes and a standing ovation from the Lord's crowd. "When did I bowl 45 overs in a Test match? Big day today… game on the line. We threw a lot at their batting with the seam. It was great that Bashir was able to get the last wicket," Stokes continued. Shoaib Bashir, carrying a finger injury, could miss the next game and may even miss the remainder of the series. Heaping praise on Joe Root, the skipper added: "Joe Root is the best batter in the world in all conditions. We thought 190 was going to be tough to chase." Jadeja's fourth successive Test fifty and late resistance with Bumrah and Siraj gave India hope, but the mountain proved too steep. With this result, England take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The fourth Test begins on July 23 in Manchester, where India will look to bounce back and keep the series alive. Emmanuel Acho slams LeBron James and Luka Doncic for poor backcourt defense in NBA debate
Emmanuel Acho slams LeBron James and Luka Doncic for poor backcourt defense in NBA debate (Image Source: Getty Images) Sports analyst Emmanuel Acho has sparked debate after making a bold statement about LeBron James and Luka Doncic during a TV segment on FS1's Speak. Acho said poor backcourt defense is why teams like the Lakers fall short. He pointed directly at James and Doncic, raising questions about their roles and whether age and playing style are holding their teams back. Emmanuel Acho blames LeBron James and Luka Doncic's defense for Los Angeles Lakers' struggles On Sunday, July 14, sports analyst Emmanuel Acho made a strong claim during an episode of Speak on FS1. He pointed to defense, specifically in the backcourt, as the key to winning NBA titles. But what caught attention was how he connected that point directly to LeBron James and Luka Doncic, saying their lack of defensive power has been hurting the teams they play for. Acho explained his view during a panel discussion while reviewing the Los Angeles Lakers' early playoff exit and what went wrong. He said, "If you're looking at the construction of NBA champions the last several years, if you look at the back court, you got dudes that can play defense." He argued that teams like the Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, and Milwaukee Bucks succeeded because their guards could defend well. Then he turned the spotlight on the Los Angeles Lakers, saying the lack of strong defense in their backcourt has been their biggest problem, especially with LeBron James and Luka Doncic playing similar roles in different setups. Emmanuel Acho highlights LeBron James and Luka Doncic in criticism of weak backcourt defense Luka Doncic, now with the New York Knicks after a shocking trade in February 2025, played much of last season alongside Kyrie Irving for the Dallas Mavericks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dementia Has Been Linked To a Common Habit. Do You Do It? Memory Health Learn More Undo While Doncic is known for his elite offense, defense has never been a strength in his game. Acho compared that to LeBron James, who is now 40 and still playing major minutes for the Lakers. While LeBron was once considered a strong defender, Acho suggested that time has slowed that part of his game. Acho's angle wasn't just about pointing fingers. He used their cases to highlight a larger shift in how NBA titles are being won. 'You can have all the offense in the world. But if your guards can't lock in on defense, you're not going to win it all,' he said. The clip quickly made rounds online and drew mixed reactions. Some agreed, saying defense in the modern NBA often gets overlooked. Others felt Acho was being too harsh on stars who carry most of the offensive load for their teams. Monty Panesar Points Out Crucial Flaw: 'India Should Just Focus On Their Game..'
Last Updated: Monty Panesar suggests India reassess their fast bowling approach after a 22-run loss to England in the third Test at Lord's. Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes India need to reassess their approach to fast bowling after narrowly losing by 22 runs in a thrilling third Test at Lord's on Monday. This result allowed England to take a 2-1 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series in front of a passionate home crowd. Panesar's assessment came after an intense final day where England bowled India out for 170, defending a target of 193 with determination. Shoaib Bashir, despite a broken finger, delivered the decisive blow by bowling Mohammed Siraj in an unusual manner. Siraj slumped over his bat in despair, reminiscent of James Neesham's heartbreak at the same venue during the 2019 World Cup final. 'Well, since India lost this Test match, I think they will have to think about how to play fast bowling," Panesar was quoted as saying to IANS after the game. 'We have just seen the uneven bounce of the pitch. The Indian batsmen were playing with a little bit of hesitation." Ravindra Jadeja's resilient unbeaten 61 kept India's hopes alive well into the final session, but his determined effort couldn't secure victory. The all-rounder's half-century, his first in a fourth innings, came off 150 balls as he battled alongside the tail. Highlighting Karun Nair's dismissal as a pivotal moment, Panesar added, 'First he wanted to play the full ball and then he left it — I think that was the opening moment for England. India must think about how they are going to play fast bowling at the Old Trafford Test match, where the ball is going to be a bit more pacey, a bit more bouncy. In my opinion, India must be absolutely clear in their game plan against fast bowling." What Was The Changing Pointing In 3rd Test? He advised India to stay focused: 'India didn't need to do that. India should just focus on their game. Don't get into these internal competitions. It doesn't help India. It takes India outside of their bubble. And suddenly they start competing with England and not focusing on what's best for them." Joe Root's first-innings century (104) and England's total of 387 set the stage, with Jasprit Bumrah's 5-74 keeping India in contention. India equaled England's score with 387, thanks to KL Rahul (100), Rishabh Pant (74), and Jadeja (72). Washington Sundar's 4-22 in the second innings helped bowl England out for 192, setting India a target of 193. However, the visitors lost early wickets and were 58/4 by the end of Day 4. Ben Stokes led with a fierce spell that broke the lower-order resistance, including Jasprit Bumrah's determined 54-ball stay. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
