Assam CM Himanta calls for end to Bihu functions; Manipur Congress takes out ‘Jai Hind Yatra'
No reason was cited for the cancellation, but the appeal understandably was made in light of the ongoing armed conflict between India and Pakistan over the Pahalgam terror attack.
'Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation and contributions,' the Assam chief minister posted on X.
'However, the time has now come to conclude this festive season. I humbly appeal that all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from 10th May onwards be kindly cancelled. Let us bring this vibrant celebration to a graceful close, with the same unity and spirit in which it was celebrated,' he further wrote.
Rongali Bihu, also called Magh Bihu, is a spring festival that marks the Assamese New Year. The celebration begins mid-April and continues for over a month.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress in ethnic violence-hit Manipur took out 'Jai Hind Yatra' in the state capital Imphal on Friday to express its solidarity with the Indian armed forces, which are engaged in 'Operation Sindoor.'
The rally was taken out under the leadership of state Congress president Keisham Meghachandra Singh, legislature party leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and Congress Working Committee member Gaikhangam which saw the participation of hundreds of Congress workers.

Kolkata: With the Calcutta High Court-mandated Aug 1 deadline to Centre to resume the 100 days' work programme in Bengal getting over on Friday, Trinamool, CPM and Congress spoke in one voice to target BJP for ignoring the state's poor. The parties indicated they would move court against Centre for contempt. On June 18, the HC had directed "prospective implementation" of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Scheme (MGNREGS), suspended in Bengal for close to three years, from Aug 1. CPM has been protesting at block levels over the past month demanding restoration of 100 days' work and for non-payment of pending wages. "If 100 days' work is not restored following the court order, we will take it to the streets. We are also looking at taking legal recourse," CPM state secretary Md Salim said. Pradesh Congress president Subhankar Sarkar said: "Investigation into cases of corruption should be done. But that cannot be used as an excuse to deny the scheme that has a huge impact on rural livelihoods. If necessary, Congress will take legal recourse. The state govt, on the other hand, should come out with a white paper on the accounts of 100 days' work." Bengal BJP said there was lack of clarity in the high court's order. "The court, on the one hand, said that 100 days' work cannot be stopped. On the other hand, it has given a go-ahead to the investigation into allegations of corruption and agreed to Centre imposing conditions," state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said. "The CM met the PM with a delegation of parliamentarians. She said that the matter will be resolved through secretary-level meetings between Centre and state. The meetings never took place," Bhattacharya added.

Congress preps to revive ‘Op Akarsh' to rope in more BRS MLAs
1 2 Hyderabad: With the Supreme Court setting a three-month deadline for the assembly speaker to decide on the disqualification of turncoat MLAs, the ruling Congress is all set to revive its 'Operation Akarsh' and go all out to rope in more BRS MLAs in a bid to escape the anti-defection law. The ruling party needs 16 more BRS legislators to merge the BRS Legislature Party (BRSLP) with the Congress Legislature Party (CLP). The BRS won 39 assembly seats in the 2023 assembly election but lost the Secunderabad Cantonment constituency in the 2024 bypoll. So far, 10 BRS legislators have joined the Congress after the assembly election. As per the anti-defection law, unless two-thirds of a party's legislators defect, the defectors are liable to be disqualified. In such cases, by-elections have to be held as legislators will have to resign after switching sides. "It has always been active. If the MLAs, MLCs, and other important leaders from other parties want to join the Congress because they are impressed with the welfare schemes of the Revanth Reddy-led govt, what is wrong in allowing them into the party? Election Commission rejects Rahul Gandhi's ‘atom bomb' claims
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday termed as 'baseless and irresponsible' Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claim his party had uncovered an 'atom bomb' of evidence proving voters lists were manipulated on a large scale, and said that it ignores such statements. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said the Congress began investigating after noticing irregularities during the Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Lok Sabha elections. He alleged that over 10 million voters were fraudulently added to the rolls. (Sansad TV) 'We dug deep because the Election Commission wasn't helping,' Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament. 'What we found is an atom bomb. When it explodes, you won't be able to see the Election Commission in India.' The Leader of Opposition said the party began investigating after noticing irregularities during the Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Lok Sabha elections. He alleged that over 10 million voters were fraudulently added to the rolls. 'There was a suspicion in the elections in Madhya Pradesh and the Lok Sabha, and it deepened in the Maharashtra assembly polls. At the state level, we believed there was a vote theft,' Gandhi said. 'It took us six months to study this in detail.' Gandhi issued a warning: 'Whoever is doing this, from top to bottom in the ECI, we won't spare you. You're working against the nation. This is treason.' In response, ECI said, 'The Election Commission ignores such baseless allegations being made on a daily basis and despite the daily threats being given, (it) asks all election officials to ignore such irresponsible statements and work in a fair and transparent manner.' The Congress has repeatedly accused the ECI of acting like a 'biased umpire', particularly in its handling of the 2024 general elections and multiple assembly polls. ECI said it had sent a mail to Gandhi on June 12 after previous allegations, but had not received a response. 'He has never sent any letter to ECI on any issue, whatsoever,' the election watchdog said. The latest accusation comes amid a broader protest by the opposition INDIA bloc over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, which they claim is a BJP-backed attempt to disenfranchise voters. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had also blamed the poll body on July 6, saying, 'With the cooperation of the Election Commission, the BJP's master plan to deprive crores in Bihar of their voting rights now seems to be ensnaring them.
