Pittsburgh in for a calm, but humid weather day on Sunday

We finally get a break from the rain and storms today. You'd think we'd also get a break from humidity and heat as well but that isn't going to be the case. Today will be hotter than yesterday with highs near 88 degrees. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos Yesterday's high was 86°. Humidity levels will also remain in the high range with dewpoints in the upper 60s all day long. Temperatures do finally dip below 70 degrees this morning; the first time we've done that since last Saturday. Conditions in Pittsburgh on Sunday, June 29, 2025 KDKA Weather Center As we head through the day, there are a couple of things to talk about. First off, if you're reading this before 10 a.m., there is likely some fairly dense fog out there in spots, with the fog being denser to the north of Pittsburgh, where skies were clear all night. Places south of I-70 probably won't see too much fog due to cloudy skies not allowing sufficient cooling. The other issue is the potential for high ozone levels making their way to the surface. Ozone develops due to a chemical process in the mid-levels due to greenhouse gases and energy from the sun's rays. Most development happens in the afternoon. At least for now, readings remain low, but that may change this afternoon. Estimates from Saturday's rainfall KDKA Weather Center We will monitor things there, but at least this morning, I am not seeing anything too concerning. Looking ahead, there seems to be some uncertainty about Monday when it comes to rain and storm chances. As of this morning, the Storm Prediction Center has us painted in as a marginal level one out of five risk of severe weather on Monday. They do not have us having a severe weather risk on Tuesday. Potential for severe weather on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 KDKA Weather Center I think the data this morning is heavily leaning towards the higher risk of severe weather happening on Tuesday. There is a chance for strong storms as a warm front lifts through late Monday into Tuesday, but this storm chance happens right at midnight. Most storm activity should come on Tuesday. Similar to what we have seen over the past couple of days, strong winds and flooding due to downpours are the main concern. Tuesday is when relief really arrives as a cold front sweeps through, taking the excess moisture with it. Temperatures at that time will return to near normal for this time of the year, with highs hitting the mid-80s for the rest of the week, with morning lows in the mid to low 60s. 7-day forecast: June 29, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca critcizes weather delays at Club World Cup and questions US hosting the competition

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca hit out at the Club World Cup organizers and suggested the United States is not a suitable host for the competition after his team's last-16 win over Benfica was disrupted by a two-hour weather delay. 'For me personally, it's not football. It's already seven, eight, nine games that they suspended here. I think it's a joke,' he told reporters after Chelsea's dramatic, extra time 4-1 win on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. 'I can understand that for security reasons, you have to suspend the game. But if you suspend seven or eight games, that means that probably this is not the right place to do this competition.' Six matches have now been suspended in five cities across the US due to adverse weather at this tournament, a year before the country is due to host the men's World Cup. On Saturday, Chelsea's match was suspended in the 85th minute when the Blues were 1-0 up thanks to Reece James' brilliant, long-range free kick midway through the second half. Enormous grey clouds gathered over the Bank of America Stadium as the players trudged off the field, bringing thunderstorms and a risk of lightning which delayed the match for one hour and 53 minutes. When they returned to play the final minutes of the match, Benfica equalized through Ángel Di María's penalty in the 95th minute to force extra time. But, instead of the momentum swinging towards the Portuguese club, Chelsea regrouped and scored three goals in less than 10 minutes to secure a thrilling win and its spot in the quarterfinals. That such a match took more than four hours to play, however, dominated the press conference afterward. 'It's not normal to suspend a game,' Maresca continued. 'In a World Cup how many games have they suspended? Zero, probably. In a European (championship), how many games? Zero. We are here, two weeks, and they already suspend six, seven games. There is some problem, for me personally.' FIFA, soccer's global governing body which organizes the Club World Cup, has not responded to CNN's request for comment. At the time of the delay, FIFA issued a statement saying that it was following 'the established safety protocols.' Maresca was quick to clarify he thought the Club World Cup was 'a fantastic competition,' and that he was 'talking as a manger' who had struggled to keep his players focused during the two-hour delay. 'When you are two hours inside and you're trying to keep them in the game for two hours, they're speaking with the family outside for safety reasons, they're eating something, they're playing, they're laughing. How can you keep them two hours inside focused?'

Severe heat waves hit Southern Europe as local authorities warn against wildfire risks

ROME (AP) — Major heat waves across Southern Europe have pushed temperatures above 40 C (104 F) in countries including Italy, Spain and Greece, as local authorities issued fresh warnings against the risk of wildfires. Experts link the rising frequency and intensity of these heatwaves to climate change, warning that such extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common across Europe's southern region. Severe heat waves were recorded in Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal before the weekend, with locals and tourists alike taking shelter from the sweltering conditions. Two-thirds of Portugal were on high alert on Sunday for extreme heat and wildfires, with temperatures expected to top 42 C (107 F) in Lisbon. In Italy, a few regions — Lazio, Tuscany, Calabria, Puglia and Umbria — were planning to ban some outdoor work activities during the hottest hours of the day in response to the record-high temperatures. Italian trade unions pushed the government to expand such measures at a national level. On Sunday, the Italian Health Ministry placed 21 out of 27 monitored cities under its highest heat alert, including top holiday destinations like Rome, Milan and Naples. In Rome, tourists tried to seek shade near popular spots like the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain, using umbrellas and drinking from public water fountains to stay cool. Similar scenes were reported in Milan and Naples, where street vendors sold lemonade to tourists and residents to offer some refreshment from the heat. Greece was again on high wildfire alert because of extreme weather, with the first summer heat wave expected to continue throughout the weekend. A large wildfire broke out south of Athens on Thursday, forcing evacuations and road closures near the ancient Temple of Poseidon. Strong winds spread the flames, damaging homes and sending smoke across the sky. Greek authorities deployed 130 firefighters, 12 planes and 12 helicopters to battle the blaze, while police evacuated 40 people, with five areas under evacuation orders. In Spain, locals and tourists were desperately trying to keep cool this weekend, as the country sizzled in temperatures as high as 42 C (107 F) in the southern city of Seville along with other locations in southern and central parts of the country. Southern regions of Spain recorded temperatures above seasonal averages, prompting health alerts and safety recommendations from authorities. The country's national meteorological service Aemet has said that June is set to break yet another record, becoming the hottest such month since records started. Experts warned that intense heat can affect daily life, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children. Local authorities advised against physical activity during the hottest hours of the day, and recommended drinking plenty of fluids. A Lancet Public Health study published last year highlighted the increasing risk of heat-related deaths because of climate change. The study predicted that heat-related deaths could more than quadruple by mid-century under current climate policies. While more people currently die from cold than heat, the study stressed that rising temperatures will offset the benefits of milder winters, leading to a significant net increase in heat-related mortality.
