C'garh cops ‘kidnapped' 8 Nadia workers: Mahua

Time of India20 hours ago
Kolkata: Eight construction workers from Nadia, engaged by a Chhattisgarh-based private construction agency to work in Bastar's Kondagaon, had been "kidnapped" by Chhattisgarh police on July 12 and put in Jagdalpur prison, Trinamool's Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra alleged on Monday.
Moitra said the workers' phones were switched off and the families had lost contact with them. The MP said these extra-judicial detentions took place despite the eight having valid Aadhaar and EPIC cards.
In a statement on X, Moitra said: "They have been sent to prison under 128 BNSS, earlier 109 CrPC, which allows cops to act if they suspect anyone is hiding to avoid committing a cognizable offence. But the legal provisions stipulated have been completely ignored, no hearings were given.
The police detained them on July 12, and now they are in prison."

She added that she had spoken to Y Akshay Kumar, the Kondagaon SP. Moitra said the SP — who is from Andhra and working in Chhattisgarh — could not respond to her queries.
Moitra also posted the police verification reports of the eight detainees. Officers from Nadia's Thanarpara police station, under whose jurisdiction the eight live, have testified that they checked the EPIC and Aadhaar cards of all eight workers, and they were all Indian citizens. "Which law allows police to detain people who are Indian citizens to work anywhere in India?" the MP said.

Surender Kumar Soni, the then Manager (Technical), NHAI, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, was convicted for possessing assets disproportionate (DA) to his known sources of income during his tenure. The court, in its decision on July 14, found that the accused had 116 per cent more assets than his known sources of income. The CBI had registered the case against Soni on July 30, 2013. After the completion of the investigation, a chargesheet was filed by the CBI on December 18, 2014, against the accused before the Special CBI Judge. In a separate case, CBI booked two NHAI engineers, a resolution board member of the Authority and five others, including builders and a middleman, over bribes of more than Rs 10 lakh linked to doctoring of the quality audit report of a road project in Jharkhand. The CBI booked two NHAI Deputy Managers and a retired engineer empanelled as a Dispute Resolution Board (DRB) Member by the Authority for bribes in lieu of furnishing a favourable Quality Audit Report (QAR) to a group of contractors working on the Rs 818 crore project for widening National Highway-75 in Jharkhand. A Quality Audit Team assessed the project executed by a number of contractors and sub-contractors, with Dineshchandra R. Agrawal Infracon being in the lead, between June 26 and June 30, the FIR said. Chhattisgarh deports 30 undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants

RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh on Tuesday deported 30 Bangladeshi nationals following an ongoing verification exercise in the state, with the individuals being sent back to their homeland. The undocumented Bangladeshi migrants were taken by flight to Guwahati, where they will be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF), a police officer said. After initiating the necessary action and completing the process of deportation, all illegal immigrants will be sent across the border into the neighbouring country. The thirty immigrants found staying 'without valid documents' were traced from the districts of Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon and Raigarh. They were apprehended following intelligence inputs and some complaints received from local inhabitants about the foreigners staying illegally. According to a senior intelligence officer, some Bangladeshis had even procured Indian passports in Chhattisgarh, travelled to their country, and returned to the state. On Tuesday, the issue of Bangladeshi and Rohingya undocumented immigrants was raised by senior BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar in the House, claiming that their strength is consistently on the rise in different districts of the state. Chandrakar claimed that illegal immigrants are accessing the benefits of government schemes after they secured documents illegally on the basis of 'false documentation' and the official machinery failing to enforce stringent regulations.
