Sixty children 'devastated' after coach crashes minutes before dream school trip
Pupils at Patcham High School in Brighton had spent months fundraising for the trip could only watch on as their bus reversed into railings as it came to pick them up.
What started as shock among the children turned to despair as they were told a replacement coach could not be found.
Parents and the school are now hoping for a 'miracle', trying to find a new experience to cheer up the heartbroken kids after Monday's mishap.
The Year 8 and Year 9 five-day trip, organised by Halsbury Travel, to the Netherlands was all part of the school's Enrichment Week.
It promised training sessions with top level football clubs and matches against local teams.
Louisa Fitzgerald's daughter Emily, 13, had been offering glitter tattoos at parties to raise money for the visit after hearing all about how amazing it was from her older brother.
However as the group waited to get on board the Halsbury Travel coach backed up into railings and tore off the luggage handle.
The mum-of-three, 49, told Metro: 'There were sixty 13- and 14-year-olds who are just devastated.
'The rest of Emily's friends are on a trip to Paris trip – that hurts. They are all sorely disappointed, upset and heartbroken.'
The drama teacher put an appeal on Facebook that evening, asking the local area to 'bring a smile' to the faces of the sixty kids stuck in school during the enrichment week.
'We are trying to find something which can still make this week special,' Louisa added.
Corinne Card's son Harry, 14, loved the football tour last year and was excited to go back this week.
The mum-of-three told Metro: 'He had never forgotten about it, this company is amazing.
'The kids were so excited because they knew how good it was going to be.'
Harry, a mega fan of Brighton and Hove Albion, and his schoolmates were left disappointed as they missed out on the trip of their dreams.
Corinne, 44, is now 'hoping a miracle can happen' so that all sixty kids can have a bright end to the week.
Louisa's Facebook appeal has already had some success – the school have been flooded with offers of free pizza and football sessions.
Halsbury Travel have even pledged to take the group to Chelsea Football Club training ground to train with Chelsea staff to make up for the disappointment.
The company's director Jonathan Icke told Metro: 'Halsbury Travel is all about building positive memories and experiences for pupils on our amazing trips and visits.
'Yesterday, we had the very difficult task of cancelling a trip when their coach was involved in a minor collision with some railings as it arrived at school and, despite our very best efforts to find a replacement coach for the 5-day tour, it was simply not possible at such short notice during a peak week for school trips.
'Since, we have been working with the school to find the best solution possible to help address this disappointing situation.
'Naturally, we have already refunded the school in full for the whole trip. We have also agreed with the school to take the whole group to the Chelsea Football Club training ground to train with Chelsea staff without any charge.
'We are also currently rescheduling dates with the school for the sports tour to Holland in the new school year, hopefully ensuring no one misses out on this amazing opportunity.
'We fully recognise this will not relieve the disappointment of this week for which we are very sorry, but we do hope this demonstrates our commitment to making the best of a very unfortunate situation for all and ensuring positive memories can still be made.' More Trending
Patcham High School's assistant head said the school were proud of how their pupils responded to the mishap, saying they showed 'maturity, resilience, and positivity' they showed throughout the day.
They are promising to hold a 'football extravaganza' at the school to keep the spirit of the trip alive.
Ruth Astley added: 'While we may not be able to bring every idea to life this week, given the tight turnaround, we are deeply grateful for the support and hope this moment sparks lasting partnerships with local organisations or enrichment experiences for our students next year.
'Patcham High School remains fully committed to providing inspiring experiences both inside and outside the classroom.'

Parents 'abandon son, 10, at airport to catch flight after his passport expired'

The parents allegedly ditched their kid at Barcelona's El Prat international airport on Wednesday so they could board the plane on time. The airport staff member posted a video, which has wracked up over 300,000 views, telling the story and condemning the parents. The child had been barred from flying because his passport had expired and did not have a visa. So the couple were said to have arranged for a family member to pick him up as they went on their way to the plane. However when airport staff then found the kid on his own the police were informed of what had allegedly happened. 'He told them that his parents were on the plane on their way to their home country, going on vacation', said the air traffic controller, whose claims have not been verified. The plane, which at this point was moments from take off, then had to return to the stand, where it was met by police. The pilot then allegedly asked passengers 'if someone had left a child in the terminal and no one had answered.' The couple were eventually found and hauled to the airport's police station where their son was. It is unclear if they were arrested. The TikToker said: 'I'm an air traffic controller, and as a controller, I've seen a lot of things, but this has been completely surreal', the TikToker went on to say. Inside Heathrow's latest £49,000,000,000 plan for third runway and terminals
The race for the controversial Heathrow expansion has geared up after two rival plans are now on the table. First up were plans by billionaire businessman Surinder Arora's company, the Arora Group, which revealed cheaper plans with a shorter new runway. Now Heathrow has submitted its plan for the third runway, which would be full length and take a chunk out of the M25 nearby. Heathrow has said its plan is 'shovel-ready' and flights could take off within a decade. The new runway could add 276,000 more flights each year, increasing the number from 480,000 to 756,000 annually. The expansion would create at least 30 new daily routes and serve up to 150 million passengers, Heathrow said. Many locals are against the expansion as homes and businesses near the airport's safety perimeter face demolition, with up to 700 buildings at risk. The UK's busiest airport has been driving for the expansion for years as bosses have argued that Heathrow's capacity is full. Heathrow's CEO, Thomas Woldbye, said operating at capacity at the moment is 'to the detriment of trade and connectivity.' He said: 'With a green light from government and the correct policy support underpinned by a fit-for-purpose, regulatory model, we are ready to mobilise and start investing this year in our supply chain across the country.' The Chancellor said the move will help boost UK economic growth, but campaigners have said the expansion will result in more aircraft noise and pollution, and groups have been up in arms about the expansion idea since it wa first introduced in 2009. Greenpeace UK said the expansion will support a small number of flyers while 'the rest of us have to live with the consequences of their disproportionate polluting.' Justine Bayley, the chair of Stop Heathrow Expansion and a local resident, told Metro that the government failed to give any of the 'downsides,' adding that the Chancellor gave 'fairly meaningless assurances that all environmental aspects will be met.' She said she has seen 'all sort of threats coming and going' during her 30 years of living in the village and that the residents would continue their fight against the expansion. Ms Bayley said the country has 'managed a fair bit of growth without the additional runway.' 'It is not a magic wand for growth,' she said. Heathrow is one of the world's busiest airports as planes take off or land up to every 45 seconds across the two existing runways. It is set to see 84.2 million passengers pass through its terminals this year – an increase of 0.4% from the 83.9 million last year. Two existing runways have capacity for around 475,000 flights. The new runway would raise the capacity to around 740,000 flights. Around one-third of the UK's long-haul flights go through Heathrow, Chancellor Reeves said. She said the expansion could create more than 100,000 jobs. Alongside long-haul routes, the new runway would serve flights to domestic locations like Belfast International, Liverpool, Prestwick and Durham Tees Valley. However, easyJet, which doesn't currently serve Heathrow, said the expansion is a 'unique opportunity for easyJet to operate from the airport at scale for the first time and bring with it lower fares for consumers.' Colne Valley Regional Park said it is 'fiercely opposed' to the expansion, claiming that it would result in the 'unprecedented environmental destruction' and loss of swathes of the park located near northwest of the airport. The group said that five rivers would need to be diverted along with the M25 and local road changes. Independent advisers on the Government's Climate Change Committee recommend there should be 'no net airport expansion across the UK.' The UK is committed to reaching net zero for CO2 emissions by 2050. Chancellor Reeves has argued that growth does not need to mean compromising the net zero target, saying that the Heathrow expansion is 'badly needed.' The expansion has caused division in the government, with Ed Miliband spending years campaigning against the project before he made a U-turn and backed the proposal. The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has been clear about it opposition to the expansion due to the 'severe impact it will have in terms of noise, air pollution and meeting our climate change targets.' It will take years before the third runway and new terminals are operational as the planning process will take up to two years before anything can be built.
