
Cyborg bees to be Chinese military scouts
The bees – part insect, part machine – could serve as military scouts or be used to search for survivors following a natural disaster.
Zhao Jieliang, a professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology, and his team recently developed the world's lightest brain controller – weighing only 74 milligrams, or less than a pinch of salt.
The device is strapped to the back of a worker bee and pierces its brain with three needles to instruct it to fly in specific directions.
Based on the tests conducted by Prof Zhao and his team, nine times out of 10 the device worked and the bees obeyed.
With this type of technology, the scientists believe that 'cyborg bees' be used in covert operations, or missions in locations inaccessible to humans.
The micro devices can be equipped with cameras, listening devices and sensors that allow the insects to collect and record information, which can then be relayed back to their operator.
Given their small size, they could also be used for discrete military or security operations as they would be able to crawl through small spaces that humans and larger robots wouldn't be able to reach and do so without arousing suspicion.
'Insect-based robots inherit the superior mobility, camouflage capabilities and environmental adaptability of their biological hosts,' Prof Zhao and his colleagues wrote in their paper, which was published in the Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering on June 11.
'Compared to synthetic alternatives, they demonstrate enhanced stealth and extended operational endurance, making them invaluable for covert reconnaissance in scenarios such as urban combat, counterterrorism and narcotics interdiction, as well as critical disaster relief operations,' they wrote.
Earlier reports on this research showed scientists outfitting other insects, such as beetles, with microchips and wiring, which they would use to control the bug's movement with infrared rays and bluetooth signals.
One of the 'backpacks' that the scientists had developed, weighed only 23mg, nearly a third of what the cyborg bees carry.
Scientists in Singapore have also developed miniature cyborg controllers, but these were bigger and heavier.
These devices however were strapped to cockroaches, which were used to help the search and rescue efforts following Myanmar's 7.7 magnitude earthquake in March.
Several other countries, including the US and Japan are also taking part in the race to create cyborg insects.
While Prof Zhao's team has made great strides in advancing the technology, challenges remain.
For one, the current batteries aren't able to last very long, but any larger and the packs would be too heavy for the bees to carry.
The same device cannot easily be used on different insects, as each responds to signals on different parts of their bodies.
China has been working to miniaturise its technology in other fields, with the country unveiling mosquito-sized drones back in June as well.

Shukla, an Indian air force test pilot, engineer and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) astronaut, is serving as a pilot on Axiom Mission 4. Shux as he is referred to by his colleagues, is only the second Indian to travel to orbit, after Rakesh Sharma made that leap in 1984. More than half have taken place at primary and secondary schools across India, including in remote forest and tribal areas, such as in Sukma, in Chhattisgarh, a state affected by Maoist insurgency movements. 'We can't rely on textbooks alone, kids need something interactive to spark their curiosity,' says Palit. But laboratory equipment can be expensive and many students do not have access to tools such as miniature spacecraft or solar system models. Only 53.6% of India's 276,840 secondary schools had integrated science labs in 2021-22. Palit has learned to improvise. At a recent workshop at Kalash high school, students sat cross-legged on the floor while he helped them create a paper orrery and model of a spacecraft. While the school has a modest laboratory, teacher Saikat Ganguly was looking for other ways to increase students' interest in astronomy. Fardin Ahmed, a 14-year-old student at Kalash who attended the workshop and now has his own model of the solar system, says: 'I learned about the solar system from books. But I didn't give much thought to the size of the universe. I now realise that we, sitting here in this small district, in India, on Earth, are a part of a vast, infinite galaxy.' Imrana Rahaman and Labiba Naaz, both 15, are thrilled to learn that the ISS will be visible on certain nights and the two girls are hoping to catch a glimpse of it and wave to their hero. A few years ago, a science teacher introduced them to a planetarium app. The girls don't own mobile phones, but downloaded the app on to their parents' phones. Ganguly says: 'Ever since, the duo have been using mobile technology to study the night sky. Now they are using an app to track the ISS and astronaut Shukla's exact location in the skies in real time.' Most of the students at Kalash come from surrounding villages and small towns. Many are first-generation learners from low-income families. Palit finds that many students, particularly those who are not from the big cities, think that a career in the sciences is beyond their reach. 'But that's when I remind them that India's space programme was born in a village,' he says, explaining that India's first rocket was launched from a sleepy fishing village, Thumba, in Kerala, back in 1963.

US senators warn Nvidia CEO about upcoming China trip
SAN FRANCISCO, July 11 (Reuters) - A bipartisan pair of U.S. senators sent a letter to Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab CEO Jensen Huang on Friday about an upcoming trip to China, warning the CEO to refrain from meeting with companies that are suspected of undermining U.S. chip export controls. The letter from Republican Senator Jim Banks and Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren asked Huang to also abstain from meeting with representatives of companies that are working with the People's Republic of China's military or intelligence bodies and are named on the U.S. restricted export list. "We are worried that your trip to the PRC could legitimize companies that cooperate closely with the Chinese military or involve discussing exploitable gaps in U.S. export controls," the senators wrote. Huang planned to visit China on Friday. An Nvidia spokesperson said, "American wins" when its technology sets "the global standard," and that China has one of the largest bodies of software developers in the world. AI software "should run best on the U.S. technology stack, encouraging nations worldwide to choose America," the spokesperson said. In May at the Computex trade show in Taipei, Huang praised President Donald Trump's decision to scrap some artificial intelligence chip export controls and described the prior diffusion rules as a failure. U.S. restrictions in April on AI chips Nvidia modified to comply with export controls to China would reduce Nvidia's revenue by $15 billion, the CEO said. The hardware necessary to power advanced AI is now subject to a bipartisan consensus related to the free export of such hardware, the senators wrote. Advanced AI hardware could "accelerate the PRC's effort to modernize its military," the letter reads. U.S. lawmakers have grown increasingly concerned about efforts to circumvent export controls to China and proposed a law that would force AI chip companies to verify the location of their products. Last month, Reuters reported that a senior U.S. official said the AI firm DeepSeek is aiding China's military and intelligence operations, and sought to use shell companies to circumvent U.S. AI chip export controls to China. Nvidia is planning to launch a cheaper version of its flagship Blackwell AI chips for China, Reuters reported in May.
