Frustrated Jonathan Rea admits he has lots to do after early struggles at Misano

The Ulster rider missed much of the first free practice session at the Marco Simoncelli Circuit after his Pata Maxus Yamaha R1 developed an electrical issue.
Rea squeezed in a lap at the end of FP1 but there was more frustration in the afternoon when the 38-year-old was unable to make much progress with the set-up of the machine.
He finished 18th after the opening day, 1.715s down on pacesetter and championship leader Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Ducati).
Rea is now aiming to make up for lost time in final practice and qualifying on Saturday ahead of the opening race of the weekend at 1.00pm.
'Tough start to my day which put us on the back foot because we had a technical problem in the morning that kept me in the box,' Rea said.
'Fortunately, the mechanics worked incredibly hard and I was able to get a lap at the end of the session to verify the bike was okay and give us some confidence to move on in the afternoon.
'Unfortunately, FP2 we didn't make much progress with the set-up as temperatures rose and the track felt different, a bit greasy, and I really struggled with a lot of chatter and understeer.
'It was hard to be precise, I couldn't stop like I want to and be on the correct part of the circuit.
'I tried to take a wheel to understand what other riders were doing, but the more I tried, the worse it got.
'Definitely room for improvement tomorrow and very disappointed with today.'
Rea made his return from injury at Cremona in Italy last month after missing the first three rounds following a crash in testing at Phillip Island in Australia.
He is out of contract at Yamaha this year and is reported to be seeking a deal with a different manufacturer for 2026.
Rea is the most successful rider in World Superbike history, winning the title in six successive years between 2015 and 2020.
After leaving Kawasaki, he has struggled to find the same form at Yamaha and finished last year in 13th in the standings, with his best result a third place at Donington Park.
Italian Bulega, last year's title runner-up, was 0.190s faster than reigning champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad) yesterday, with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Ducati) in third.
Bulega leads the championship by 31 points from Razgatlioglu going into round six and is bidding to win the crown for the first time in only his second season in World Superbikes.
Razgatlioglu, meanwhile, is set to make the move to the MotoGP World Championship next year with the Pramac Yamaha team and is determined to retain the title for BMW before taking on a new challenge next year.
'On one side, I feel sad; on the other, I'm so happy,' said Razgatlioglu, whose crew chief is Northern Ireland man Phil Marron.
'I'm sad because I feel like World Superbike is part of my family. I know everyone,
'I'm really happy with the paddock. This paddock is relaxed, and everyone is friendly.
'Moving to MotoGP as a three-time World Superbike champion is my biggest dream for this year.
'We're still fighting for the title with Bulega and we're not so far behind, just 31 points. I hope we get the title this year.
'This is my last year with BMW, and I need to give something to them before I move to MotoGP.'
On Sunday, the Superpole race is at 10.00am with Race Two at 1.00pm.

Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour has the skillset to play for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola - but he should stay at Napoli, according to Pat Nevin. Gilmour made the move from Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League to Italian side Napoli last summer. Alongside fellow Scotland internationalist Scott McTominay, he went on to win the Serie A title - only the fourth Scudetto in Gli Azzurri's history. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Contracted to Napoli until the summer of 2029, any suitors would have to pay a significant fee for the Rangers academy graduate, who already has experience of playing in the EPL with Chelsea, Norwich City and Brighton. And while former Scotland internationalist Nevin reckons the 24-year-old would thrive at a possession-based club such as Man City, he is better off staying in Naples. Billy Gilmour has excelled since moving to Napoli. | Getty Images 'Billy was playing for Chelsea when he was 18, playing against Liverpool and looking like the best player on the field,' said Nevin. 'Then he doesn't get his chance. 'He moves to Norwich, a team that wasn't suited to him. Then he goes to Brighton, finally a place that suits him, and they loved him and he was doing really, really well. But he didn't suit the way they were buying and selling so they moved him again. 'Honestly I do think if you stuck him in the centre of Manchester City's midfield he'd be fine. He's good enough. He can do that technically with his quality. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Why leave Napoli? 'But why would you move back from Napoli? It is heaven over there for a player. If you're winning the scudetto, if you're getting lauded the way he and Scott McTominay are, I would be staggered (if he left). I think he'd look towards Spain if he were to move. I think that would suit Billy down to the ground. And I think he'd love them there. 'People that don't watch Napoli or Scotland sometimes roll their eyes and think it's just a Scottish guy. He plays against some of the best players in the world and he outshines them quite regularly. 'The downside is he's not going to score you any goals and he's not massively creative either. But he controls games. That control in games is massively important for certain types of teams.

Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool reach Ekitike agreement, Man Utd submit THIRD Mbeumo bid, Gyokeres to Arsenal latest

No Alexander Isak, no problem for Liverpool. The Premier League champions have pivoted from attempting to sign Newcastle's talisman to stealing a march on their top target, Hugo Ekitike. After Newcastle had a £70million bid rejected by Eintracht Frankfurt, Liverpool have swooped in and agreed personal terms with the French striker, 23. They still need to strike a deal with Frankfurt, who are dialogue with the Reds and value Ekitike at a cool £85m. Speaking of expensive strikers, Arsenal are still in negotiations with Sporting Lisbon over Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners fly out for their pre-season tour of Asia on Saturday and want the 27-year-old Swede, who's been fined by Sporting for failing to report for training in Portugal, as soon as possible. At Manchester United, their focus is firmly on Bryan Mbeumo and they finally made a third bid for the Brentford winger on Thursday. Ruben Amorim's side have offered a guaranteed £65m but Newcastle's interest in Brentford's Yoane Wissa could muddy the waters. 10:12Oli Gamp FULL STORY: Gibbs-White makes transfer demand Morgan Gibbs-White wants his future to be resolved before Nottingham Forest jet off to Portugal for their pre-season training camp. The 25-year-old is the subject of a furious transfer row after Tottenham activated his £60million release clause and thought they had snapped up the England international for a relative bargain. But Forest hit back and accused the North London side of an "illegal approach" and said they would be consulting their lawyers after concerns of a confidentiality breach relating to the player's release clause. Read the full story on Gibbs-White here. 09:45Nathan Ridley Osimhen poised for Galatasaray return Victor Osimhen is close to rejoining Galatasaray on a permanent basis in a huge £65.8million transfer deal. Reports from Italy claim that Galatasaray and Napoli are now in advanced talks, with only the final details such as his sell-on clause left to negotiate. The Turkish giants will pay £35.6m this summer before paying a further £30.2m by the end of 2026. Galatasaray also won't be able to sell Osimhen to an Italian club within the next two years. The Nigerian striker scored 37 goals in 41 appearances while on loan last season. 09:18Nathan Ridley AC Milan make Hojlund enquiry AC Milan have asked Manchester United about the availability of Rasmus Hojlund. Sky Sport Italia report that Milan have identified Hojlund, 22, as a target and recently made an enquiry. The feasability of a deal remains to seen, although United would likely be willing to part ways with the Danish striker, who knows Serie A from his time at Atalanta. 08:35Nathan Ridley Howe admits Newcastle frustrations Eddie Howe admits that Newcastle have had 'little' to show for their hard work in the transfer market. The Magpies appear to have lost out on Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool and have only made one signing, paying £55million for Anthony Elanga. "It was a difficult summer (to switch off) with everything going on behind the scenes," the Newcastle boss told NUFC TV. "Obviously losing Paul (Mitchell) and all of the dynamics changing within (the club). "The sporting director role is such a pivotal role at the club, so there was a lot (of work) to pick up. There has been a lot of work, transfer-wise, for very little incoming action. "Although we are delighted to get Anthony Elanga in, who has done very well in training so far. But a lot more work (is needed) behind the scenes in preparation for the new season." Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford remains a top target. 08:02Nathan Ridley Walker-Peters close to West Ham switch Free agent Kyle Walker-Peters has agreed to join West Ham on three-year deal, according to multiple reports. The ex-Southampton full-back had been set to join Turkish giants Besiktas but the move fell through. Walker-Peters, 28, was released by Southampton when his contract expired in June. 07:34Nathan Ridley ICYMI: Man City win race for wonderkid We're delighted to confirm the signing of Sverre Nypan from Norwegian side Rosenborg — Manchester City (@ManCity) July 17, 2025 07:07Nathan Ridley What's the latest on Gyokeres? The Viktor Gyokeres saga is still rumbling on and it'll have to be a quick resolution if Arsenal want him to undergo a medical in time for their pre-season tour. Mikel Arteta's squad will fly to Asia after facing Watford in their first friendly tomorrow. Earlier this week, it was reported that Arsenal had reached an agreement with Sporting to pay £55million plus £8.5m in add-ons. But Portuguese media claim that Sporting don't believe those add-ons are realistic, so they haven't formally accepted the bid. Unless Arsenal are keeping this well under wraps, don't expect to see Gyokeres in north London today. 06:48Nathan Ridley Ten Hag responds to Antony reunion links Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has ruled out a reunion with Antony at Bayer Leverkusen this summer. Antony, 25, is up for sale after a superb loan spell with Real Betis in the second half of last season. "He has great quality. I signed him twice. He was like a son to me, he still is a son to me," Ten Hag, who was appointed by Leverkusen in June, told Bild. "We're not interested in him at the moment, but we'll see what happens in the future." 06:24Felix Keith FULL STORY: Arsenal hijack Liverpool's move for striker Arsenal have reportedly muscled in to poach a highly-regarded young striker from under the noses of Liverpool. The Reds had been in pole position to sign Will Wright from Salford City after making the League Two club an offer. But Liverpool have now accepted defeat in the race for the 17-year-old striker after Arsenal gazumped them. Wright has attracted attention from Manchester City, Brentford, Leicester City and Burnley with his goal scoring exploits. Read the full story on Wright here. 06:00Nathan Ridley Good morning Hello and welcome to Friday's live transfer blog. We'll be bringing you all of the latest news and done deals throughout the day, so don't go anywhere. Ten Hag shoots down Antony transfer rumours Erik ten Hag clearly has a strong relationship with Manchester United star Antony after signing him twice during his career. He helped establish the Brazilian winger as one of Europe's most promising stars when the pair were at Ajax together, then brought him to Old Trafford for £85m in 2022. Antony has struggled to justify that huge fee during his time at United, but showed glimpses of his ability during an impressive loan spell at Real Betis last season. With Antony now looking to sort out his future once again this summer, Ten Hag's new club Bayer Leverkusen have emerged as a viable option - but the Dutchman has dismissed those claims. When asked if a transfer was possible, Ten Hag told Bild: "He has great quality. I signed him twice. He was like a son to me, he still is a son to me. "We're not interested in him at the moment, but we'll see what happens in the future." 21:16Oli Gamp Galatasaray closing in on Osimhen signing Victor Osimhen has been on the wishlists of a number of top clubs across Europe, but it looks like Galatasaray are set to wrap up his permanent signing following a successful loan spell last season. In a surprise move, reports have claimed Galatasaray will pay a total of £64m to Napoli after he fell out with boss Antonio Conte. One of the caveats of the deal reportedly state that the Turkish side cannot sell to any other Italian side for the next two seasons. Osimhen was previously linked with moves to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. 20:07Oli Gamp DONE DEAL! Manchester United star Gore loaned to Rotherham Things haven't quite come together at Manchester United for Dan Gore the way he would have hoped, but there's still plenty of time for him to make his big breakthrough into the first team aged 20. For now though, he'll have another chance to impress on loan at Rotherham, joining the League One side for another season after spending the second half of the 2024-25 campaign with them. Gore - famous for having a training ground scrap with Anthony Martial - wasn't able to impress with the Millers after suffering a hairline foot fracture early into his spell. He played just one game for the club and will now be keen to make up for lost time. 19:13Oli Gamp Ekitike hands transfer request Another plot twist in the Ekitike saga! Liverpool look like favourites to land the Frenchman this summer after Newcastle's £70m bid was rejected. It's believed Frankfurt want around £86.5m for their star player - which is the amount in his release clause - and Liverpool look likely to stump up a fee in that region. But to ensure the move goes through, Ekitike has now handed in a transfer request, according to German outlet Bild, as he looks to link up with the Premier League champions. 18:38Oli Gamp DONE DEAL! Man City sign Nypan This one has been brewing for a while but City have finally got their deal complete for talented wonderkid Sverre Nypan from Norwegian side Rosenberg. Nypan is seen as one of the most promising midfielders in football and joins City after Arsenal looked nailed on to sign him last year - before talks broke down. The 18-year-old joins City on a five year contract taking him up until 2030 - with big things expected after making his Rosenberg debut aged 15. The player said: 'I am incredibly happy and proud to have joined Manchester City. It's a dream for any young footballer to become part of this Club and to join such a group of world class talent. 'I am still very young with a lot to learn but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world, will only help me to become a better player. 'There is already a special connection between Norway and Manchester City through Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb, and I am very proud to have become the latest Norwegian player to have joined the club.' 18:02Oli Gamp DONE DEAL! Bakayoko joins RB Leipzig Johan Bakayoko is a player who has been linked with a number of Premier League sides, including Newcastle and Nottingham Forest - but he's disappointed them by linking up with German outfit Leipzig. Bakayoko has signed a five-year deal with the Bundesliga side after they agreed a deal worth around £20million with his club PSV Eindhoven. 16:37Oli Gamp Mbeumo's favourite shirt number up for grabs Manchesster United are still locked in talks to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford after lodging a £70m bid, and the Cameroon international could get his desired shirt number if he moves to Old Trafford. Mbeumo has always played in a number 19 shirt throughout his career and that number is currently up for grabs as things stand at United. The last player who occupied the No 19 shirt was defender Raphael Varane, who left for FC Como last year. 15:54Oli Gamp Another Diaz bid on the way Bayern Munich had a £58.5m bid rejected for Liverpool forward Luis Diaz last week, but appears Vincent Kompany's side are not deterred in their pursuit of the Colombian. Sky Sports in Germany are reporting the Bundesliga giants are prepared to go back in for the player and lodge another bid - though it would have to be a huge one to tempt Liverpool. It's understood the Reds value him closer to £86m after he contributed to their Premier League title triumph with 17 goals in all competitions. 14:58Felix Keith Spurs goalkeeper leaving Josh Keeley is leaving Tottenham to join Luton, according to the Evening Standard. The 22-year-old has failed to agree terms over a new deal with Spurs so will move on. He had a successful stint on loan with Leyton Orient last season and will now get regular game time in League One with Luton. 14:17KEY EVENT Man Utd make THIRD Mbeumo bid It's as if Manchester United were reading my last post... The Athletic reports that United have submitted a third bid for Bryan Mbeumo: £65m plus £5m in add-ons. It comes after two offers were rejected. Firstly, £45m plus £10m, then £55m plus £7.5m. After weeks of delays, United are desperate to get the deal over the line before the team heads off on their pre-season tour of the US. 13:59Felix Keith Another Mbeumo issue for Man Utd? As we have reported, Brentford are holding firm over Bryan Mbeumo, who wants to move to Manchester United. They've rejected two offers and are stalling things, with new boss Keith Andrews keen to keep his best players. Well, now Newcastle are pushing for Yoane Wissa - having been snubbed by Hugo Ekitike, who appears set for Liverpool - that could pose United another problem. Will Brentford green light the exits of their two best attackers to Premier League rivals in the same window? 13:37Felix Keith Juve set Vlahovic asking price Juventus are willing to sell Dusan Vlahovic for just £20million. According to Calciomercato, the Italian giants are so desperate to get his wages off the books that they will happily shake hands for €25m (£21m), with an offer of €20m (£17m) likely to be accepted too. The Serbia international has a year left on his deal and had requested Juventus terminate it for a payment of €10m (£9m), but that was rejected. AC Milan and Manchester United are reportedly in the picture. 13:02Alex Richards Besiktas pull out of Walker-Peters deal Turkish club Besiktas have issued a statement declaring they have withdrawn their offer to Kyle Walker-Peters. They wanted the free agent and had previously announced an agreement in principle. The player had duly been invited to Istanbul for a medical. But Walker-Peters might be holding out for something else, as he postponed that medical. However Besiktas have no intention of playing second fiddle. Now they've declared: "Today, Kyle Walker-Peters notified us, requesting an extension. Consequently, our club has withdrawn its transfer. "Our club continues its transfer efforts in accordance with its established policy." 12:57Nathan Ridley Newcastle turn focus away from Ekitike With Liverpool leaping ahead in the race for Hugo Ekitike, Newcastle have been forced to look for an alternative. Multiple reports claim that man is Brentford's Yoane Wissa. DR Congo international Wissa scored 20 goals for the Bees last term, becoming the club's record Premier League goalscorer. The 28-year-old is understood to be valued north of £50million. Contact between Newcastle and Brentford is expected soon. That could muddy the waters in Manchester United's pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo. TERMS AGREED Liverpool are moving fast! Personal terms with Eintracht Frankfurt hitman Hugo Ekitike have been agreed, with a six-year deal ready for the Frenchman. Negotiations with the German club are ongoing to get a deal for a new centre-forward done, bringing him to Anfield. 12:10Nathan Ridley Chelsea target £80m Rogers Chelsea want to sign ANOTHER former Manchester City academy star. The Sun report that Morgan Rogers is now top of Chelsea's shortlist after signing Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro for a combined £111.5million in the past fortnight. But Aston Villa don't want to lose Rogers, 22, and have slapped an £80m price tag on the England international. The midfielder would join Gittens, Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, Romeo Lavia and Tosin Adarabioyo in playing for City at youth level and now being at Chelsea. Don't forget Enzo Maresca was at City, too. 11:31KEY EVENT FULL STORY: Liverpool to launch Ekitike bid Liverpool are in pole position to sign Hugo Ekitike with the player preferring a move to Anfield over Newcastle. The Reds will have to submit an offer of more than £70m as Eintracht Frankfurt rejected an offer from Newcastle for that sum earlier this week. But Liverpool have told the Bundesliga club that they are ready to bid for the player and are advancing in talks. Ekitike, 23, has decided he wants to move to Anfield and talks are moving swiftly. The Reds approached Frankfurt on Wednesday to register their interest and later informed the club they are ready to bid. Now the two sides are in open contact looking to do a deal. Read the full story on Ekitike here. 11:02Kit Mann WBA eye South Korea hitman West Bromwich Albion are plotting a raid on South Korea to sign winger Jeon Jin-woo. Albion are trying to land a deal for the K League's leading scorer from league leaders Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. He's scored 12 goals this term but Albion are hoping to land the 25-year-old for less than £1.5m. 10:30Nathan Ridley Arsenal shatter women's transfer record Arsenal have completed the signing of Liverpool striker Olivia Smith in world-record £1million deal. Smith, 20, has signed a four-year contract with the European champions. The Canada international scored nine goals in 25 appearances for Liverpool, having joined from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon last summer for just £200,000. The latest addition to the Arsenal family Olivia Smith is a Gunner — Arsenal Women (@ArsenalWFC) July 17, 2025 10:09Matthew Cooper FULL STORY: Gyokeres met with brutal fan message Sporting Lisbon fans have sent a brutal message to Viktor Gyokeres, with the striker closing in on a move to Arsenal. Gyokeres is desperate to join the Gunners and has essentially gone on strike to try and force through a transfer. There have been protracted negotiations between the two clubs and Mirror Football understands that Arsenal have submitted an improved offer that will see the player's agent take a vastly reduced cut. And Sporting fans have now made their feelings clear on the situation after displaying several banners aimed at Gyokeres during their first pre-season friendly against Celtic on Wednesday, which Brendan Rodgers ' side won 2-0. According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, the first banner read: "I don't cry for those who leave, I'm happy for those who stay." Another banner stated: "No one is above the club's interests, no matter who they are." Read the full story on Gyokeres here.
