‘Scandalous': Mamata Banerjee questions Delhi Police for calling Bengali ‘Bangladeshi language'
'This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India,' the Trinamool Congress chief said on X. 'They cannot use this kind of language which degrades and debases us all.'
Banerjee was referring to a letter purportedly written by the station house officer of the Lodhi Colony police station to the Banga Bhawan, in which the officer asked for identification documents to be translated from Bengali to Hindi and English.
The letter was written in the context of a case in which eight persons suspected to be Bangladeshi citizens living without valid documents in India were arrested. '…For the investigation to proceed further, it is requested that an official translator/interpreter proficient in Bangladeshi national language may kindly be provided for the aforesaid purpose,' the letter said.
Banerjee said that the letter was 'scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional'.

The Trinamool Congress chief called for protests against the Union government for using 'anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate' the Bengali-speaking citizens of India.
'Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our National Anthem and the National Song [the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay] are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!' she remarked.
In recent days, the Trinamool Congress has been expressing its disapproval of Bengali-speaking workers outside the state being detained on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. At the party's Martyrs' Day rally on July 21, Banerjee alleged that Bengalis in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states were being harassed, detained and removed from voter rolls.
The Trinamool Congress chief accused the BJP of 'unleashing linguistic terrorism' against Bengalis.

West Bengal records 12% growth in GST collection for July: CM Mamata
West Bengal has registered a 12 per cent year-on-year growth in gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for July 2025, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday, citing provisional figures released by the Centre. In a post on X, Banerjee said the state collected Rs 5,895 crore in GST revenue last month, up from Rs 5,257 crore in July 2024. "Glad to share that West Bengal has reported a robust 12 per cent year-on-year growth in gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for July 2025, recording collection of Rs 5,895 crore, compared to Rs 5,257 crore in the same month last year, according to provisional figures just released by the Government of India," she said. "Cumulative growth rate in our state's GST revenue till the month of July is 7.71 per cent. This marks a steady improvement in business and consumption in West Bengal, which is a sign of good economic health," she added. Banerjee's remarks come at a time when her government has been highlighting economic recovery and resilience in the state following the opposition parties' allegations of economic decline in the state.

Suvendu Adhikari's convoy attacked: ‘Couldn't have happened without nod from TMC top brass'
The convoy of BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, was attacked, allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers, in Cooch Behar. The incident took place in Khagrabari in the afternoon. Adhikari was going to meet with the police superintendent over alleged incidents of party workers being targeted in the district, after securing an order from the Calcutta High Court. He was also scheduled to hold a party meeting there. TMC organised protests in 19 spots along the route of the convoy against'possible NRC (National Register of Citizens)' in Bengal, alleged harassment of migrant workers working outside the state, and disrespect to the Bengali language. TMC workers chanted 'Joy Bangla' slogans and waved block flags at the convoy. While the convoy was passing through the Khagrabari area, stones were pelted at the convoy, and cars were attacked with bamboo poles. Apart from the vehicle in which Adhikari and Nisith Pramanik were travelling, police cars were also damaged. 'TMC, under the leadership of Udayan Guha, has done this in the presence of police.
