Dubai Basketball wraps up historic debut season following knockout in Belgrade

Dubai Eye03-06-2025

Despite taking an early lead, Dubai Basketball suffered a 114-97 defeat at the third and final game of the semi-finals at Belgrade Arena against Serbian powerhouse Partizan.
Davis Bertans, Klemen Prepelić, and Nate Mason each sank three-pointers within the first four minutes giving Dubai Basketball an early lead, but by the end of the first quarter, Dubai had stormed ahead with a commanding nine-point lead.
However, the momentum began to shift in the second quarter. With the backing of a packed home crowd, Partizan tightened their defence and gradually closed the gap, reducing Dubai's lead to just a single point by the end of the third quarter.
As the game progressed into the third and fourth quarters, Partizan demonstrated why they are seven-time ABA League champions. Although they surged ahead, Dubai refused to go down without a fight, repeatedly equalising the score and keeping the contest wide open.
In the final quarter, Partizan pulled away, scoring an impressive 28 points that widened the gap to 17 and ultimately secured their place in the finals. Dubai, however, walked away with their heads held high, having challenged one of Europe's top basketball teams to the very end.
"Throughout the season, we played good basketball. We claimed major wins – including victories over some of the league's giants – and today, we pushed Partizan into a serious battle for a place in the finals," said Dubai Basketball's head coach Jurica Golemac.
This season has been nothing short of historic for the first-ever sports club in the country representing the city of Dubai. It has laid the foundation for a legacy in the making, one that is not only transforming the sporting landscape in the country but also supporting the region's presence on the global basketball stage.
Dubai Basketball officially set out on their journey in the Adriatic League in September – competing against some of the most prolific teams in Europe. From beating reigning champions Red Star in their opening game to being one of the only teams in the league to beat Partizan twice in their home court, the 2024/25 season was packed with milestones.
Reflecting on the season, Golemac said: "We must be satisfied. This was our first season, with 13 new players in total. We were fortunate to have selected not only top-quality athletes but also exceptional people who made this journey smoother."
He added that "plans for the future are already underway. In fact, they've been in motion throughout the season. Analysis, planning – it all continues. As they say, the off-season begins tomorrow, and so does our preparation for what comes next".
Dubai Basketball's debut has shown that a newly established team can rise to challenge Europe's elite — creating something monumental for the sport, not just in the country, but across the Middle East.

Djokovic feeling good at Wimbledon as he looks to stay at top level

28 June 2025 19:40 London (PA Media/dpa)Novak Djokovic feels Wimbledon could be his best chance of adding a record 25th Grand Slam to his exceptional CV as he prepares for his 20th experience of the tournament. The Serbian, who has lifted the men's singles trophy seven times, exited the French Open at the semi-final stage after losing to a far younger player in Jannik 38 Djokovic is bidding to become the oldest winner of a major title, and with his prior Wimbledon form he considers the upcoming championship a prime opportunity to do so."My wish is to play for several more years, I would love to be healthy physically and also mentally motivated to keep on playing at the highest level," he said."That's the goal, but you never know at this stage."I would probably agree that Wimbledon could be the best chance (of a 25th Grand Slam) because of the results I have had, because of how I feel, how I play in Wimbledon - just getting that extra push mentally and motivation to perform the best tennis at the highest level."Whether it could be my last dance, I'm not sure, as I'm not sure about Roland Garros or any other slam that I play next." In the latter stages of his career Djokovic has focused less on his ranking and more on his performances in Grand Slams, an approach that has allowed him to be philosophical about losses in lesser events. He said: "I would say it's slightly different for me now in terms of I don't chase the rankings anymore in that regard. I'm trying to play the best tennis in Grand Slams and trying to win Grand Slams. That hasn't changed."Even though my level of tennis has been going quite up and down and fluctuating much more than it was the case for the most part of my career - if you see the last year and a half I've been kind of volatile with my results. Grand Slams stays quite consistent. "Except the US Open last year, was playing quarters or semi-finals. That's good. That's a good sign because that's exactly what I want. These tournaments give me the biggest drive still. "This year I played two semi-finals. Unfortunately in Australia I had to retire, in Roland Garros I was outplayed by Sinner. I think I still played a decent level of tennis that showed me that I can still play on a very high level at the later stages."

Newbury and Jebel Ali Racecourse cement ties following successful race collaboration

Mr Ubiquitous delivered a stunning performance to land the Jebel Ali Racecourse Handicap in impressive fashion at the Newbury Racecourse. Ridden by Jack Nicholls and trained by Harry Eustace, the three-year-old gelding surged late between horses to win by half a length, confirming his upward trajectory. Mr Ubiquitous was drawn in stall 2 and settled at the rear of the seven-runner field. As the pace quickened with two furlongs to run, Nicholls—still in only his second season in the saddle—showed maturity beyond his years. He waited patiently for a gap to appear before switching left, then slicing between rivals to produce a powerful burst that took him to the front inside the final 100 yards. The race, run over seven furlongs on good to firm ground, saw This Farh (trained by David Loughnane) dictate matters from the front, hitting the lead over a furlong out under Rossa Ryan. For a moment, it looked like he might hold on, but Mr Ubiquitous's finishing speed proved too much. Tolerance, trained by George Boughey and ridden by William Buick, finished strongly from off the pace but was always doing his best work too late, finishing another length behind in third. 'It is always a pleasure to be at Newbury Racecourse — a racecourse that reflects excellence,' said Mohamed Al Ahmed, General Manager of Jebel Ali Racecourse. 'I was delighted to see a vibrant crowd and new initiatives introduced to enhance the race day experience. 'On behalf of Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Board Members of Newbury Racecourse for their continued guidance and support. 'Their leadership has been instrumental in strengthening our international relations and expanding the global presence, and to the leadership at Newbury for their warm hospitality. 'Our long-standing relationship, built over two decades, is more than symbolic; it is a strategic partnership built on shared values and a mutual vision for the future of racing. 'We look forward to further collaboration and to welcoming our Newbury counterparts in Dubai in the near future,' he added. 'Newbury Racecourse was delighted to welcome Mohamed Ahmed, General Manager at Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables and to stage a race in celebration of our enduring friendship and partnership which extends more than two decades,' said Shaun Hinds, CEO Newbury Racecourse. 'The Jebel Ali Racecourse Handicap was well supported and saw Harry Eustace's Mr Ubiquitous bring up a hat-trick in Dubai-style sunshine. 'Despite continents separating our respective venues we share many core values with an emphasis on delivering a first class racing experience for participants and racegoers driving everything we do. I look forward to visiting Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables again and, in the meantime, closely following their development plans,' Hinds added.
