DGCA carries out surveillance at major airports, including Delhi and Mumbai

As part of its commitment, DGCA had issued an order on June 19 to initiate a focused assessment of the aviation ecosystem to strengthen safety measures across the aviation sector. Two teams led by the Joint Director General, DGCA, carried out comprehensive surveillance during night and early morning hours at major airports, including Delhi and Mumbai, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement.
The surveillance covered multiple critical areas such as flight operations, airworthiness, ramp safety, air traffic control (ATC), communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) systems, and pre-flight medical evaluations. Throughout the surveillance, ground activities and aircraft movements were closely monitored to check the compliance of regulatory requirements and to identify weak areas for improvement, according to the ministry.
Multiple cases wherein the reported defects reappeared many times on the aircraft, indicating the ineffective monitoring and inadequate rectification action on the defects/repeated defects; Ground handling equipment's such as baggage trollies, BFL, etc were found unserviceable; Line maintenance stores, tool control procedures were not followed.
During maintenance of aircraft, the work order was not followed; The unserviceable thrust reverser system and Flap Slat Lever were not locked; During maintenance, safety precautions found not taken by AME as per AMM; at places, the AME was not attending to the snag rectification; Defect reports generated by the aircraft system, were not found recorded in the technical logbook; Several life vests were not properly secured beneath their designated seats; The corrosion-resistant tape on the right-hand side winglet's lower blade was found to be damaged, ministry stated in a release.
Similarly at an airport, centre line marking of runway was observed faded; The rapid exit taxiway, green centre lights were not unidirectional; the obstruction limitation data has not been updated for last three years and no survey has been performed despite many new constructions around the vicinity of aerodrome; number of vehicles in the ramp area were found without speed governors. These vehicles were withdrawn by cancelling their AVP, and the drivers' ADP were suspended, the release said.

A simulator was checked and found not to match the aircraft configuration. The software was also not updated to the current version, it added.
Civil Aviation Ministry said that a domestic flight of a scheduled carrier was cancelled due to worn tyres, and it was released only after the required rectification was carried out. All the findings observed during the surveillance have been communicated to the concerned operators for taking necessary corrective actions within seven days.
This process of comprehensive surveillance will continue in future to detect hazards in the system in line with the Order No. DGCA-22034/2/2025-FSD on June 19. (ANI)

The full-scale emergency mock drill at the OTA premises on GST Road brought together various stakeholders of Chennai airport to assess their preparedness and readiness in case of a flight crash near the airport. Initially, onlookers and passersby panicked as they heard about the 'mayday call', saw medical teams triaging patients based on injuries, watched CISF personnel cordoning off the area and the bomb squad checking the luggage for suspected ammunition. The drill caused a traffic snarl on the GST road for about an hour as vehicle movement was restricted to make way for ambulances. It took a while for people to understand that it was an exercise being carried out by several govt agencies as a practice to manage future emergencies. The entire exercise was monitored and evaluated by DGCA representatives, air traffic controllers, and district administration to identify performance metrics that need improvement. However, this time authorities planned it outside the airport. DGCA instructed all the airports to carry out a full-scale emergency exercise at the earliest after the Ahmedabad incident, which occurred outside the airport. Though the exercise was originally scheduled for December, it was advanced as per DGCA instructions.

New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, presented Gallantry and Distinguished Service Awards to Naval Personnel at the Naval Investiture Ceremony held for the first time at the newly constructed Nausena Bhawan in Delhi on Friday. The awards were conferred to honour and recognise bravery, leadership, professional achievement and distinguished service of Naval Personnel. A total of 51 personnel were conferred with awards during the ceremony,y which included one Yudh Seva Medal, thirteen Nausena Medals (Gallantry), eight Nausena Medals (Devotion to Duty) and seventeen Vishisht Seva Medals. During the ceremony, CNS also presented the Jeevan Raksha Padak to Dharambir Singh Negi, Ex-PO EL(P) for saving a person from drowning in Hindon Canal on 15 July 2024; Capt Ravi Dhir Memorial Medal for promoting Flight Safety; and Lt VK Jain Memorial Medal for outstanding research in the field of electronics, computers and applied sources. The CNS Trophy for Best Green Practice was awarded to Material Organisation (Vizag) in the industrial category and to INS Shivaji in the non-industrial category, respectively. The CNS also presented Unit Citations to various units for their outstanding service over the past year. The recipients in the Operational Units category were INS Shivalik, Trishul, Karna, and Flight Squadron INAS 316. The recipients in the category of shore establishments were INS Satavahana, Rajali, and Tunir. Indian Navy Captain Rajababu Sharma spoke to ANI and said, '... I received the Navy Gallantry award for my service on INS Sumitra when we were deployed in the Gulf of Aden as a part of Operation Sankalp and the anti-piracy operation. This was on March 6, 2024. During the Houthis' attack, the crew of the merchant vessel True Confidence sustained injuries after being hit by a missile... As the Indian Navy, we were the first responders to this situation... The entire merchant vessel was on fire... The 21 crew of the vessel were in a small boat and were injured and adrift in the open sea... The location was not known, but they needed immediate assistance... We located the boat and evacuated them...' Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi congratulated the awardees and remarked that this occasion is of special significance, as it represents a formal acknowledgement by the Indian Navy of the conspicuous acts of gallantry and devotion to duty of its personnel. The ceremony was also attended by the families of the awardees and senior dignitaries from the Indian Navy. The ceremony concluded with a Dinner hosted by the Chief of the Naval Staff for the awardees and their families, and a reaffirmation of the Navy's motto of 'Safeguarding National Maritime Interests - Anytime-Anywhere'. Bangkok-bound Air India flight 'held back' at Mumbai airport for over 5 hours

Agencies A Bangkok-bound Air India flight from the city was held back for over five hours on June 25, after some hay was found stuck in one of the aircraft's wings, the airline has said. This was immediately attended to, and the aircraft was subsequently cleared for operation, Air India said in a statement. The Tata Group-run airline did not share other key details such as the number of passengers and crew on board, the type of aircraft, the scheduled time of departure and for how long the passengers remained stranded at the Mumbai airport. However, according to flight tracking website the flight AI 2354, operated by an Airbus A320Neo plane, was scheduled to depart from Mumbai at 7.45 am. However, it departed after a delay of over five hours -- around 1 pm. "AI2354 scheduled to operate from Mumbai to Bangkok on 25 June 2025 was held back as some hay was found stuck below the left wing of the operating aircraft," Air India said in a statement on Friday. This was immediately attended to, and the aircraft was subsequently cleared for operation, the airline said, adding that the source of the hay (getting below the wing)could not be identified. It also said as the flight crew came under the regulatory flight duty time limitations, the flight could not depart immediately. The service provider handling the aircraft at Mumbai airport has been instructed to investigate the matter, which has been duly reported to the safety regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air India said in the statement. The passengers were disembarked and served refreshments, and the flight departed as soon as a fresh set of flight crew reported, the airline added. The incident came days after the DGCA detected multiple violations related to airlines, airports, aircraft maintenance works, and repeated defects in multiple cases during its surveillance at major airports, an exercise carried out in less than two weeks after the June 12 Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. Without disclosing names of the airlines, airports and other entities in relation to the defects, the regulator had on Tuesday said surveillance covered multiple critical areas such as flight operations, airworthiness, ramp safety, Air Traffic Control (ATC), Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) systems, and pre-flight medical evaluations.
