TAMPARULI: The Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) division, here, lodged a report on Saturday at the Tamparuli Police Station concerning a statement made by businessman Albert Tei during a press conference on June 30. PBS Tamparuli Deputy Division Chief, Madin Anak, said Albert Tei's remarks made outside the Kota Kinabalu Court Complex were defamatory and seditious.
Advertisement 'This report is made to strongly refute the baseless accusations made by Albert Tei during his press conference and the related article published by Malaysiakini,' Madin said when contacted. 'This action is also a step to defend the leadership of Sabah, particularly the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, as well as the top leadership of PBS - Acting President Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam and Deputy President Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim.' Madin said Tei's comments were an attempt to incite public unrest and undermine public trust in the nation's legal and enforcement institutions. On June 30, Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim had publicly denied allegations published by an online news portal accusing him of receiving RM150,000 in bribes linked to a mining scandal. Jahid clarified that he had no involvement in any mining-related scandal and had never received any funds related to mining license approvals, adding that his ministry holds no authority over such licensing matters. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? LDP urges action on AI-driven scams threatening Malaysia's security

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has urged the government to act swiftly against the rise of AI-driven scams, warning they threaten national security and public trust. LDP Information Chief Nicholas Ban said deepfake technology is being used to impersonate figures like Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and major institutions such as Bank Negara and Petronas in fake promotions, costing Malaysians over RM2.11 billion since 2024. He called for immediate updates to outdated cybercrime laws, the introduction of an AI Governance Bill, and enhanced enforcement tools including real-time AI detection and a national 'kill switch' to block scam operations. Nicholas also pushed for proactive monitoring by MCMC, stronger public awareness campaigns, and digital literacy education, especially for vulnerable groups. He stressed that the recently passed Protection from Scams Act 2025 is not enough, and more comprehensive action is urgently needed. 'These scams are attacks on public confidence and our digital future,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Explain why US tariff talks failed, MP urges government

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the 25% tariff meant that the funds used to send Malaysian delegations for talks with the US had gone to waste. PETALING JAYA: An opposition MP has urged the government to explain why tariff negotiations with the US failed, following the imposition of a 25% rate on Malaysian goods effective Aug 1. In a Facebook post, Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the investment, trade and industry ministry's (Miti) goal of talks with Washington would naturally have been to lower the tariff rate. However, the 25% rate announced by US president Donald Trump today was higher than the 24% originally imposed. 'This clearly shows that the government has failed to fulfil the hopes of the rakyat in the matter of US tariffs. And it clearly shows the relevant minister's failure to defend the nation's interests,' he said in a jab at Miti minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz. The Bersatu Supreme Council member also said the development meant that the funds used to send Malaysian delegations for trade talks with the US had gone to waste. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Trump said the 25% tariff on Malaysian goods was 'far less' than what was needed to eliminate the country's trade deficit with Malaysia. The US president added that any attempt to reroute goods through other countries to avoid higher tariffs would be penalised by the application of higher rates. Miti has said it will continue discussions with its US counterparts, and that it remains committed to engaging the US on a 'balanced' and 'mutually beneficial' trade agreement. Miti deputy secretary-general (trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa led the tariff negotiations with Washington from May 28 to May 30. Tengku Zafrul then led a delegation last month and said discussions with the US trade representative and secretary of commerce on tariff-related negotiations had made good progress. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Police quiz five over preacher's alleged sharing of explicit videos involving his wives

Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the 39-year-old suspect remains under investigation, and the case will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor once completed. Kuala Lumpur: Police have recorded statements from five individuals, including the wives of a freelance preacher, as part of investigations into the alleged distribution of intimate videos involving his spouses and other women. Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the 39-year-old suspect remains under investigation, and the case will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor once completed, according to a report published in the New Straits Times today. 'So far, statements from five witnesses have been recorded in connection with this case,' he said when contacted yesterday. The man was arrested on July 5 following a report by his second wife, who claimed he had shared explicit videos featuring her and his other wives. Police had earlier confirmed that two mobile phones and a laptop were seized during the arrest. On Sunday, Selangor Islamic Religious Council chairman Datuk Salehuddin Saidin said the council had revoked the preacher's teaching credentials due to alleged criminal conduct dating back to 2022. Salehuddin also confirmed that the Selangor Islamic Religious Department had detained the preacher in September 2024 for preaching without valid credentials. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
