Italy beats Belgium 1-0 in their Euro 2025 opener in what could prove to be a pivotal win
Arianna Caruso scored on the stroke of halftime to give Italy an advantage in a tough Group B, which World Cup winner Spain is expected to top. The first two in the group will progress to the quarterfinals — and Belgium, Italy and Portugal will likely face a close battle for second.
Two-time runner-up at the Euros, Italy hasn't reached the knockout stage since 2013.
The victory was also revenge for Italy, which lost to Belgium in the group stage at Euro 2022 and came into the match on a streak of three straight defeats to the Red Flames.
UEFA announced earlier that a minute's silence would be observed at Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and Friday in memory of Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, who were killed in a car accident in Spain.
That was observed impeccably at a packed Stade de Tourbillon in Sion.
The first half was finely poised, with a lot of good moves from both sides but a lack of final product as neither goalkeeper was really troubled.
The most threat came from Belgium captain and all-time top goalscorer Tessa Wullaert and the Inter Milan forward had the best chance five minutes from the break. Her initial shot was blocked and she then sent her second attempt just wide of the left post.
Italy broke the deadlock just four minutes later. Lucia Di Guglielmo picked out Caruso, who had been left completely unmarked on the edge of the area by the Belgian defense, and the Bayern Munich midfielder advanced into the left side of the box before cutting in and curling into the near top corner.
Cristiana Girelli almost doubled Italy's lead in stunning fashion in the 64th minute with a back-heeled attempt from close range that drew an impressively quick reflex save from Belgium goalkeeper Lisa Lichtfus to turn it away with her foot.

The ball then came out to Caruso but she fired narrowly wide.
Lichtfus pulled off another crucial stop in the dying minutes to deny substitute Michela Cambiaghi as Italy had a number of chances to seal the result.
Spain was playing Portugal later in Bern.

Stafford McDowall named to captain Scotland against the New Zealand Maori
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Center Stafford McDowall will captain Scotland in Saturday's match against the New Zealand Maori in Whangarei, New Zealand, the first match of Scotland's Pacific tour. McDowall played in all of Scotland's matches in the last Six Nations tournament in place of the injured Sione Tuipulotu. Scrumhalf George Horne and backrower Josh Horne have been named as vice-captains. Horne is the most-capped player in the Scotland lineup with 35 caps. McDowall will combine in midfield with Rory Hutchinson who was named in coach Gregor Townsend's squad in the absence of Matt Curry. Fullback Ollie Smith will play his first match for Scotland since the 2023 World Cup. Backrower Alexander Masibaka and New Zealand-born flyhalf Fergus Burke have been named on the bench to make their first appearances for Scotland. The match is not an official test. Spain's new star, Vicky López, announces her presence at Euro 2025
BERN, Switzerland (AP) — From the country that claimed the last four Ballon d'Or awards, Spain has a new star. The 18-year-old Vicky López announced her arrival on the big stage Thursday by helping Spain to an opening 5-0 rout of Portugal at the Women's European Championship. It was Spain's biggest ever win at the tournament, eclipsing the 4-1 win over Finland at Euro 2022. López added the second goal just minutes after Esther González scored the first and she proved a constant threat for the beleaguered Portuguese defense, setting up chances for Alexia Putellas and playing a decisive role before González' second goal. Her performance earned praise from Spain coach Montse Tomé, even if she understandably tried to reign in the burgeoning expectations. 'She's a young player with whom we have to be patient. We've been working with her for a year, almost two years now,' Tomé said. 'We have a lot of faith in her talent, and she's at a point where we've been able to give her minutes (of playing time) now. She responded well. She did the job she had to do very well.' Tomé said López still had plenty of time to develop. 'We have to keep helping her improve. She's very young, and we're here to help her continue enjoying what she does,' the Spain coach said. It's clear that Tomé's faith is paying off for the player. 'When I play with confidence, I play better,' López told media in the mixed zone after Thursday's match. 'When you play without confidence, it's bad. Ultimately I'm grateful for the trust that I'm shown because I try to be myself on the field.' López played till the 81st minute when she made way for Aitana Bonmatí, who started on the bench after being hospitalized for viral meningitis last week. Bonmatí won the last two Ballon d'Or awards. Putellas won the previous two. All three players are teammates at Barcelona. At 18 days and 342 days old, López became Spain's youngest player to appear at the European Championship. She'd already set the record as the country's youngest player when she made her debut last year. López became the youngest player to play in Spain's top women's league when she played for Madrid CFF aged 15. She joined Barcelona in 2022 and went on to break more records there because of her age, including becoming the club's youngest player, male or female, to appear in the Champions League. 'My family is the foundation of my entire life, and of course my father,' said López, whose mother died when she was 11 years old, and who still looks to the sky after she scores. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Though Bonmatí is likely to play a greater role in the next games, López will get more opportunities to shine. She's already thinking of the team's goals. 'We're hungry for more,' López said. 'I think if we keep going like this, playing as a team and having that luck in front of goal, we'll be able to play a very good European Championship.' Spain plays Belgium next on Monday. ___ AP soccer:

New Pumas star Aaron Ramsey faces an invisible enemy in Mexico City — the altitude
MEXICO CITY (AP) — An invisible enemy awaits former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey in Mexico City — the altitude. Ramsey was introduced on Thursday as a new player for the UNAM Pumas, who play their home matches at estadio Olimpico, which sits at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level. The Mexican Apertura tournament starts next week, although Pumas will not play their first home game until July 20. 'The altitude is something I have that I have definitely have to get used to,' Ramsey said at a media conference. 'I am doing well at the moment I need to take the next steps and hopefully I will be to be on the pitch as soon as possible to help my teammates. I hope it will be very soon.' The 34-year-old Ramsey arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday for his medical and signed his one-year contract on Thursday. 'This league is very technical, with great players and over the last I've really tried to get as much information as I could from certain people and, you know, the internet and things like that,' added Ramsey. Pumas is considered one of the four most popular teams in the country although it has not won a title since the Clausura 2011 tournament. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 'I have had pressure throughout my career. I've played for some of the best teams in the world, and there's an expectation to win,' Ramsey said. 'I'm sure here is no different, so. I know what this club can do, and hopefully I can play my part to be successful.' Ramsey finished the final three matches of the 2024-25 season as Cardiff City's interim manager after they were relegated from the Championship to League One in Wales. With 86 appearances for Wales, the midfielder helped his country reach the Euro 2016 semifinals. Ramsay has previously said he hopes to continue playing for the national side as it attempts to reach the World Cup in the U.S., Mexico and Canada next year. ___ AP soccer:
