Anwar thanks Malaysians for patience amid efforts to strengthen economy

Malay Mail4 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed gratitude to Malaysians for their continued patience and support as his administration works to restore the nation's finances and address the lingering effects of past scandals.
This comes in the wake of recent revelations by investigative journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright, who disclosed that Malaysia's actual losses from the 1MDB scandal could total up to US$18 billion (RM75.9 billion).
The prime minister said this figure underscored the scale of the damage inherited by the Madani government.
'From the very first day the prime minister took office at the end of 2022, he remained committed to repairing the country's financial standing so that he can better serve the people,' said the prime minister's senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, in a livestream today.
With the country's financial position now gradually stabilising, Tunku Nashrul said the government has begun rolling out targeted assistance to ease the public's burden amid global economic uncertainties.
'The prime minister said that these measures were made possible only through disciplined governance and improved fiscal space.
'The prime minister also extends his sincere apologies for delays in fulfilling some of the promises made before taking office, as rebuilding trust takes time and deliberate effort.
'Despite constant personal attacks from Opposition figures, including Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and the Opposition Leader, the prime minister said that insults and mockery on social media won't derail the government's mission to serve the rakyat,' said Tunku Nashrul.
The government has recently come under fire for its decision to reduce the RON95 petrol price from RM2.05 to RM1.99, and for providing a one-off RM100 cash assistance to all adult Malaysians.
While some Opposition leaders dismissed the move as trivial, Tunku Nashrul said it was a meaningful gesture in line with National Month celebrations — especially as it marks the first time all Malaysians, regardless of background, have received such direct support.
He also clarified that the recently announced aid — including the nationwide rollout of Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) starting 31 August — is not part of Budget 2026, which will only take effect next year.
'Instead, these initiatives are funded through responsible fiscal planning within the scope of Budget 2025.
'These measures are immediate and necessary, aimed at alleviating the cost-of-living pressures faced by the people now.
'Budget 2026, which will be tabled this October, will contain broader allocations for the following year,' said Tunku Nashrul.
The Prime Minister's Office has also offered to brief Opposition leaders on basic budgetary principles, for those who may still be unclear about the difference between fiscal assistance and formal budget allocations.
'If there are no interruptions from 'the grasshoppers by the sea' like Sanusi and his allies, InsyaAllah, the Madani government will continue to deliver more prosperity for all Malaysians,' Tunku Nashrul said.

SIA flights between Singapore-Cambodia, Singapore-Thailand, operating normally amid border dispute

A spokesperson for the SIA Group said its top priority is the safety of customers and its employees. - ST SINGAPORE: All Singapore Airlines (SIA) flights between Singapore and Cambodia, as well as between Singapore and Thailand, continue to operate normally despite a deadly border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. A spokesperson for the SIA Group said its top priority is the safety of customers and its employees. 'We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust our flights where necessary,' the spokesperson added. A long-simmering border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia escalated to deadly violence on July 24 as their military forces clashed at multiple spots, leaving at least 12 people dead. The flare-up is part of a broader disagreement with origins stretching back more than a century and involves parts of a region known as the Emerald Triangle, where the boundaries of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos meet. The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia will attend mediation talks over their deadly border conflict in Malaysia on July 28 at 3pm local time at the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim invited representatives from both countries. Malaysia, which chairs the regional grouping Asean, has informed the Thai government that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet would also be attending the talks, the statement said. According to The Nation, flights between Thailand and Cambodia are continuing as normal, as Cambodia's declared restricted area is limited and does not significantly impact air traffic departing from Thailand. Alternative flight paths are also readily available. - The Straits Times/ANN

Infineon investment lifts Malaysia as chip hub, creates 1,500 jobs

KUALA LUMPUR: Infineon Technologies' mega investment has not only positioned Malaysia as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub but will also generate 1,500 high-income jobs for Malaysians, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had announced Infineon's RM30 billion potential investment during a trade and investment mission to Germany, following a meeting with the company's top management. "That potential has now become a reality. Infineon Technologies, the German semiconductor giant, has commenced an additional RM30 billion investment to build the world's largest 200mm Silicon Carbide (SiC) Power Fab at the Kulim Hi-Tech Industrial Park in Kedah. "The first phase of the plant has not only been completed, it is already operational. The launch of this facility reflects the state government's recognition of the federal government's efforts in attracting further investment to Kedah," he said in a post on X. He added that Infineon's commitment also extends to supporting local small and medium enterprises through its local vendor development programme, launched on Jan 15, 2025, which has benefited 139 local companies. "This is a highly significant investment and a clear sign of Infineon's confidence in Malaysia. From potential, we have made it a reality," added Tengku Zafrul.

‘Turun Anwar' protestors left 20-tonne rubbish in KL? Nga defends claim, says numbers come from SWCorp

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming stood by his statement that 20 tonnes of rubbish were left scattered following Saturday's 'Turun Anwar' rally, organised by the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional. He said the data was provided by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), which carried out the clean-up after the rally ended. 'The claim that 20 tonnes of rubbish were left behind did not come from me, it was a report by SWCorp, which I received from the ground. 'Hundreds of our workers were deployed to clean up the waste after the black shirt rally. I do not deny that a group from the Unit Amal helped clean up, and I thank them for that. But it also cannot be denied that 20 tonnes of rubbish were strewn across Sogo, Dataran Merdeka, and Jalan Petaling,' he said during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. Nga was responding to a supplementary question from Pendang MP Datuk Awang Hashim, who questioned the 20-tonne figure and accused him of lying. Nga criticised the unhygienic behaviour of rally-goers, stressing that such gatherings must be conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner, including maintaining cleanliness. Yesterday, Nga blasted the rally organisers for their lack of environmental responsibility, after nearly 20 metric tonnes of rubbish were left scattered. He described the situation as 'deeply regrettable' and 'truly shameful', condemning the 'filthy attitude' shown at the event.
