Indian police find Russian woman living in cave with her young children
Nina Kutina, 40, and her daughters, aged six and four, were found by police during a routine patrol to Ramatirtha Hill, a popular tourist site on the coast of Karnataka, on July 9.
Police officer Sridhar SR said the family had been living in the cave for more than a week.
Police said they were taking steps to repatriate Ms Kutina to Russia for overstaying her visa. She and her children have been moved to a nearby detention facility for foreigners living illegally in India.
A spokesperson said that Ms Kutina spent her time in the cave meditating by candlelight, and that she told investigating officers she was 'interested in staying in the forest and worshipping God'.
Mr Sridhar said Ms Kutina told police that she had worked as a tutor of Russian language in Goa, a coastal tourist state in southern India.
'It is nothing but her love for adventure that brought her here,' said Mr Sridhar.
He said police found pictures of Hindu deities on the inside walls of the cave where Ms Kutina had been living. In a photograph provided by the police, she is seen in front of makeshift curtains made of red saris that covered the entrance to the cave.
Police said Ms Kutina sent a message to her friends after she was found.
'Our peaceful life in the cave has ended — our cave home destroyed,' she wrote in the message, according to the statement.
On Tuesday, she told news agency Press Trust of India that she spent her days in the cave by painting, singing, reading books, and living peacefully with her children.

New surveillance video shows the moment a gunman involved in a shooting spree last week in St. Paul fired into a restaurant, injuring two people. Police say 32-year-old Tevin Bellaphant died by suicide on Friday after shooting at police officers several times inside an Aldi grocery store and a nearby Cub Foods off Clarence Street on the city's east side. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension now says a man and a woman were hurt amid the spree inside neighboring Destiny Café 2, correcting the original police report that stated the victims were two women. The bureau says officers were first dispatched on Friday after Bellaphant took a 4-year-old child from a relative's home without permission. Two St. Paul police officers found Bellaphant inside a nearby Aldi store. The BCA says they tried talking to Bellaphant but he pushed an officer and ran off, leaving the child behind. After falling near the front of the Aldi, officers say he pulled out a handgun and fired at them. The officers shot back as he fled towards the cafe. Surveillance footage shows a man and a woman frantically running inside the cafe as Bellaphant approaches. The woman is seen trying to keep the door closed as Bellaphant gets his arm inside the door, shooting her and the man, before fleeing. Cafe manager Eddie Thao says the woman was shot in the upper leg and the man was struck in the lower leg. He says it was a truly scary scene, with 40 to 50 people packed into the restaurant. "I was so shocked when he shot the two bullets at first, it was three total … we didn't even know how to react," Thao said. "It was in less than seconds, and then we ducked our heads … I'm so glad our customers, they weren't hurt." Thao says the man and woman were walking their dog and were likely just in the wrong place at the wrong time. On Wednesday, the bureau released the names of the three law enforcement members who exchanged gunfire with Bellaphant: officers Christopher Leon and Melissa Leistikow, and Sgt. Megan Kosloske. All three are on standard administrative leave. Handwritten notes help searchers find mom and son who got lost in dense California forest
A mother and her young son who got lost in a dense California forest were rescued after search crews discovered handwritten notes the woman and boy had left behind, authorities said this week. The notes said "HELP" at the top and included information about where the pair was located, according to images posted on social media by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office in Northern California. "Me and my son are stranded with no service and can't call 911," one note read. "We are ahead, up the road to the right. Please call 911 to get help for us. Thank you!" The sheriff's office said authorities received a report on Saturday afternoon that the 49-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son left the Sacramento area the day before and were on their way to a Boy Scout camp called Camp Wolfeboro. The mom and son "were overdue and not answering their cellular phones," the sheriff's office said. A volunteer search and rescue team that had been training in the area was deployed to look for them, equipped with information about a possible location noted in a location-sharing app. Later that evening, around 5:40 p.m., the team found a note at a Forest Service road intersection indicating that the mom and her son were stranded, the sheriff's office said. They followed the road and found a second note that listed a telephone number and the names of the mother and son. Searchers found them and their vehicle about a mile away in an isolated, dense forest location. Authorities said they learned that the mother and son had lost GPS signal after driving into the remote area and had been unable to retrace where they came from. They spent a night in their vehicle, with a cooler of drinks and food that they had packed for Camp Wolfeboro, according to Lt. Greg Stark, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, The Associated Press reported. In an effort to help searchers, the boy had used his whistle "to periodically deploy three short bursts, an international signal for help," the sheriff's office said. They also turned their vehicle's hazard lights on at night. "Of importance in the successful outcome was their pre-trip notification of telling someone where they were going and when to expect them back," the sheriff's office said.

13-year-old boy charged with carjacking man at gunpoint in South Commons neighborhood
A teenage boy was charged after police said he participated in an armed carjacking on the city's South Side Wednesday afternoon. The 13-year-old was arrested in the 4200 block of South Wabash Avenue and charged with two felony counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon/vehicle/loaded firearm. Chicago police said the teen was identified as one of the suspects who allegedly took a vehicle at gunpoint from a 30-year-old man in the 2600 block of South Martin Luther King Drive. The teen was placed into custody within minutes, and a firearm was recovered, police said. No additional information was available.
