Iowa baseball unable to complete sweep vs. Nebraska, drops series finale
After claiming their sixth conference series of the season with a come-from-behind 11-6 win on Saturday, Iowa baseball (23-11, 14-4 Big Ten) was unable to complete the series sweep vs. Nebraska (16-20, 5-10) as the Cornhuskers would prevail 6-4 in Game 3 from Daune Bank Field on Sunday afternoon.
While the Hawkeyes finished with a slight 8-7 advantage in hits, the Cornhuskers were able to do more damage with their opportunities. Not helping Iowa was the fact that the Hawkeyes left 11 base-runners stranded throughout the game.
"We had a few opportunities and just had poor execution," said head coach Rick Heller. "The one inning where they tried to give it to us with the errors -- that was the one where we needed to break it open. With runners in scoring positon, you get two strikeouts, and we only end up getting one run that inning. I guess that's the biggest story is that we only had a couple oppurtunites, but we didn't put a crooked number up there, and that's what we've been doing. Today it just didn't happen."
Redshirt senior right-hander Reece Beuter (4-0, 4.35 ERA) started on the hill for the Hawkeyes, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out seven Huskers through five innings. Ben DeTaeye (0-3, 4.42 ERA) came out of the bullpen in the sixth in replacement of Bueter, where he surrendered just one hit and punched out three in two innings of work.
Daniel Wright (1-1, 4.02 ERA) then took the mound in the eighth, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. Wright would be tagged with the loss as a result.
In the top of the ninth, Anthony Watts (2-2, 4.15 ERA) was brought on to extinguish the Nebraska half, which he did so while surrendering just one hit in 2/3 innings of action.
Regarding the offense, Iowa opened the scoring in the second inning when Jackson Beaman hit an RBI double down the left-field line to score Kooper Schulte. Nebraska tied the game in the third with a solo home run and then took a 3-1 lead in the fourth with two more solo shots.
Iowa answered right back in the bottom half of the fourth by capitalizing on a couple of Cornhusker errors and a Gable Mitchell RBI SAC fly to knot the game at three apiece.
The Hawkeyes would take a 4-3 lead in the seventh frame when Daniel Rogers hit an RBI double into the left-field corner, bringing home Reese Moore from second base.
Unfortunately, Nebraska would regain a 5-4 lead in the eighth off two Hawkeye errors and tack on an insurance run on an RBI single in the ninth.
"On the positive side, I thought Reece Beuter gave us a good start," said Heller. "The three solo home runs, with the way the wind was blowing early, it felt like we would give up a home run or two during the day. But that was fine because I felt like we would eventually score some runs, and why wouldn't you with the way we've been going offensively."
Up next for Iowa will be a single-game matchup vs. Bradley (5-26, 1-11 Missouri Valley) at Duane Banks Field on Wednesday, April 16. The Hawkeyes previously defeated the Braves by a 13-3 score from Dozer Park in Peoria, Ill., when the two met on April 1.
The first pitch for Wednesday's game is set for 6:02 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus (subscription required).

'King of the Hill' reboot reaches NASCAR. See Joey Gase's show-inspired Iowa paint scheme

Beloved animated sitcom 'King of the Hill' isn't just returning to televisions next week after a 15-year hiatus. The show is also making its NASCAR comeback. In an effort to promote Season 14, which releases on Hulu on Aug. 4, 'King of the Hill' linked with driver Joey Gase for a pair of paint schemes. Gase will steer two 'King of the Hill'-themed cars at Iowa Speedway this weekend. In Saturday's HyVee Perks 250 Xfinity Series race, he'll drive the No. 53 Chevrolet for his own Joey Gase Motorsports team. In Sunday's Iowa Corn 350 Cup Series event, he'll pilot the No. 66 Ford for Garage 66. 'I am excited to have 'King of the Hill' not only on my Xfinity car, but also my Cup car, at my home track, Iowa Speedway,' Gase said. 'It is a show that I have been watching since I was a teen, and it's going to be really cool to help them set off their brand-new season on Hulu.' See NASCAR driver Joey Gase's 'King of the Hill' paint schemes for Iowa races Gase hails from Cedar Rapids, which sits about a 90-minute drive from Iowa Speedway in Newton. The 32-year-old last competed in the Cup Series during last year's Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. His cars will look nearly identical. An image of Hank Hill, the show's protagonist, adorns the hood, with some of the other characters visible in the reflection of his glasses. Characters also appear on the side of the car. 'King of the Hill' has NASCAR ties, including Dale Earnhardt appearance The first 13 seasons of 'King of the Hill' aired from 1997 to 2009 on Fox. In 1998, Dale Earnhardt guest starred on Episode 21 of Season 2. It was the only time a NASCAR driver ever appeared on 'King of the Hill.' But this won't be the first time the show has done some laps around the track. In 1999, 'King of the Hill' served as the paint-scheme inspiration for Stacy Compton's No. 86 ride during the Truck Series' Memphis 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park. NASCAR takeaways: William Byron finally has enough fuel for first win since Daytona 500

As the end of the Iowa Corn 350 drew closer and closer Sunday, it seemed like William Byron's tough-luck streak would continue. Yes, he held the lead. But the guy who hadn't posted a top-five finish in two months — and had placed better than 16th only once in the last six races — was running out of fuel at Iowa Speedway. It had already happened to him in June at Michigan and last week at Indianapolis, too. His outlook appeared bleak. So how did it turn out? Byron's gas tank didn't hit empty until after his post-win burnout. His No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet possessed enough juice to reach the line, holding off Chase Briscoe and Brad Keselowski in the process to secure Byron's second win of the season. 'Man, how about that for some fuel mileage?' he said on the NBC broadcast afterward. 'We've had our fair share of things not go our way with fuel mileage, and just super thankful for (crew chief Rudy Fugle), all these guys, all the engineers, all the engineers back at the shop. Just this whole race team, we've been through a lot this year. It's been a lot of growing pains. It's been tough on us. But it feels really good today to get a win.' Let's break it down. 1. William Byron heads to first Victory Lane since Daytona 500 Just how long did Byron survive without a refill? He last pitted on Lap 206, gritting through the final 144 go-arounds. And who was he keeping at bay? Briscoe, who won the pole Saturday, and Keselowski, who claimed the first two stages. The victory gave Byron his first top-five ranking since the Nashville race on June 1 and vaulted him back into the points lead. Overall, he has eight top-fives this season. The win also represents the 15th of his Cup Series career. He's the fifth driver to lock down multiple victories this season. 'Our confidence in each other never wavered,' Byron said of his team. 'I feel like our speed has been better than it's ever been, and that's a big reason why we stay confident. I feel like every week we work really hard together and show up prepared, show up fast, and yeah, we needed just one to go our way. Today, it did.' 2. NASCAR playoff standings update With three races left in the regular season, NASCAR will need three new winners to saturate the 16-car postseason field. Odds are, that won't become reality and at least one driver will crack the playoffs on points. Who should feel good right now? Tyler Reddick should. He sits in 14th in the standings, 122 points above the cutline. Alex Bowman leaves Iowa in 15th, 63 points in the positive. And in the 16th and final playoff spot at the moment is Chris Buescher. Buescher is 23 points in front of Ryan Preece, who stands as the first man out. Kyle Busch (minus-73), Ty Gibbs (minus-87) and AJ Allmendinger (minus-118) reside in 18th, 19th and 20th. Buckle up. 3. Next on NASCAR schedule, it's an all-skate at the Glen Remember that flurry of road courses back from mid-June to mid-July? After three weeks of bread-and-butter oval tracks, NASCAR returns to the longest-running road show in Cup Series history: Watkins Glen International, and the Cup teams aren't leaving anyone behind this coming week. Preceding next Sunday's Cup race ("Go Bowling at the Glen"), the Xfinity Series races Saturday. Friday, it's a doubleheader, as the Truck Series returns from a week off and races in the afternoon after NASCAR's satellite minor-league circuit — the ARCA series — tackles the Glen. — Ken Willis contributed to this story This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: NASCAR results today: William Byron is Iowa Corn 350 race winner
