As we toured through buildings from this historic village, each devoted to a different artisanal skill or aspect of life, the kids seemed perplexed. There was a blacksmith, a tinsmith, a print shop, a general store, and a schoolhouse. Each interpreter walked the kids through the seemingly primitive, yet amazingly complex, sets of skills and networks of knowledge that were represented at each station.

The tinsmith used eleven different specific tools as he made a star-shaped Christmas decoration. He pointed out that the tin he used would have had to be imported from Britain. The printing press was an amazing invention that transformed 16th century Europe and the societies that emerged out of it. It needed expensive skilled labour and was constantly being updated and modified to be more efficient. Tied to the market and democracy, the printing press was part of what made this rustic little village (and the real ones it is meant to represent) part of a wider network of ideas and things. There were also weavers using complex machines that were, in some ways, the first computers.

And yet, at several points, as the interpreters turned to the kids for questions, one kept surfacing: 'Did the Indigenous make this?' Because they must have, right?

To which the interpreters replied, 'No,' and moved on.

So much of the social studies curriculum in Ontario tells kids to center Indigenous peoples and knowledge. How could these amazing things not come from Indigenous cultures?

It was at the replica church that things really got weird, though. There was no interpreter in this building, and so the kids were happy to run amok. One child walked up to the front and — reaching for the closest thing in his mind he could think of that might be a prayer — in mock, sonorous tones, he recited a land acknowledgment, which he knew by heart. Of course, he did.

Canadian schools got rid of the Lord's prayer a generation ago. It didn't fit with a modern diverse Canada. It has been replaced by land acknowledgments.

There was a time, not too long ago, when the school system didn't operate this way — when Indigenous history and contemporary concerns were not a major focus. There has been a lot of progress to rethink how we approach the Canadian past.

But there's also the Canadian tradition of turning a good thing into a stupid mess.

These young children know that they need to respect Indigenous cultures — and know that these cultures were sophisticated and fascinating. That's what they've learned.

But what they don't have are the lessons from an earlier time that would balance out this new appreciation. Instead, their lessons speak against an earlier way of thinking about the country. Without that earlier knowledge, what these kids are getting is the now off-balanced focus on reconciliation, relationships to the land, and inclusivity.

What they lack is the broader story of the settler societies that created Canada — about the dynamism of centuries of progress from the Scientific Revolution to the Enlightenment to the creation of modern forms of democracy, liberalism, and parliamentary institutions. Yet, this isn't part of the elementary curriculum.

This isn't the fault of any individual teacher (many of whom are wonderful).

Over 300 cats in care at Ottawa Humane Society as kitten season ramps up. Sunday, June 29, 2025 (Josh Marano/ CTV News Ottawa) It's one of the busiest times of the year at the Ottawa Humane Society, caring for hundreds of animals. Cats making up the majority, with marketing and communications senior manager of the Society Stephen Smith saying there are over 300 in care. 'Summer is the busiest time at the Ottawa Humane Society and there's a couple reasons we see this, number one kitten season cats are outside they might be breeding, we're seeing litters of kittens coming into our care,' Smith says. Smith says they also tend to see more strays this time of year as well. 'People are spending more time outdoors and the door might be left open, people might be letting their cats outside and they don't return at night, there's a number of reasons animals might become stray, and again, the Ottawa Humane Society is here to help them get home,' Smith says. The shelter is not at capacity, and Smith says they will always find room for animals in need. Along with monetary, toy and food donations, the shelter is asking for more volunteer help during these times, whether that be at the society, or through fostering. 'We're always looking for more foster volunteers, especially those who might be able to take on a large dog who have behavioral challenges,' Smith says. 'If you or somebody who has a lot of experience with dogs, maybe a little bit of a larger property available for them to get a bit more space, the help is always appreciated.' 'If you'd also like to take a litter of kittens for a week or so, we also need that support too. So come one, come all.' Donations can be made at the Ottawa Humane Society website.

Late centurian Second World War vet honoured with celebration of life

A memorial and celebration of life was held for Allister 'Mac' MacDonald Sunday afternoon in his hometown of Stayner. 'Mac' passed away back in March at the age of 102 years old. He was a decorated veteran and longtime community leader. On Sunday, more than 150 members of his family, community, and local Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) friends gathered to celebrate his century-long life. 'He loved us all. He loved us so much,' said Stuart MacDonald, 'Mac's' youngest of four children. 'He would always want you to do better than him. He would go out of his way to make sure you're okay, and he meant the world to me.' 'Mac' enlisted in the RCAF in 1941 as an air engine mechanic, even lying about his age to join the military before he was eligible. 'It's a big honour for us to be able to be the colour party in this celebration of life,' said RCAF Ret. Maj. Murray Conley. 'Allister was a member of the RCAF Association 441 Wing in Barrie. He was a proud man, loved the air force, loved to be with our association and we appreciated his honour to accept us and be with him in his final years.' It was during the war that MacDonald met his future wife at a dance hall, a love story that led to their marriage in 1945. After returning home, MacDonald built a family and spent most of his life serving his community. He was a proud father to four and served two terms as Stayner's mayor. Well into his 80s, he remained active on numerous boards and community initiatives. 'Veterans came back from the war as the 'Greatest Generation' and they built our communities here in Canada. Those veterans who came back, they did everything they could to make sure their community was a great place and that's what 'Mac' represented,' said Doug Measures, Mayor of Clearview Township. 'He became a gentleman who knew he was part of the military, but used his skills to bring the community around into a nice warm welcoming community that brought commerce and business in the area.' Recognized for his military service and leadership, MacDonald received accolades from King Charles, as well as local leaders. CTV News Barrie met with MacDonald in November, and asked him his secret to a long life, which he simply replied, 'Have a good woman.' A sentiment his son said his father lived by, saying his legacy was one of love. 'He credited everything to the love of a good woman.' In addition to his four children, MacDonald leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With files from CTV's Dana Roberts.
