Probe into bans for Grenfell firms paused amidst criminal investigation
They are cladding firm Arconic, insulation firm Kingspan, former Celotex owners Saint-Gobain, fire inspectors Exova, design and build contractor Rydon, architect Studio E and subcontractor Harley Facades.
All faced criticism in the final report of the inquiry into the June 2017 west London tower block fire, which claimed the lives of 72 people.
Investigations were believed to have been launched into all of them in March, looking into whether any engaged in professional misconduct for the purposes of the Procurement Act 2023, potentially leading them to be debarred from public contracts.
But the Government said it had paused its investigations so as not to impact on criminal investigations.
In a statement published on Thursday, it said: 'The Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service informed the Cabinet Office that continuing the debarment investigations could unintentionally prejudice the criminal investigation and any future criminal proceedings.
'To ensure the Metropolitan Police's criminal investigation and any future proceedings remain the priority, the Cabinet Office has paused its separate, non-criminal debarment investigations at the request of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the Metropolitan Police. This decision has been made to safeguard the integrity of the Metropolitan Police's criminal investigation. '
The CPS said it had noted the Government's decision to pause debarment investigations.
Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS special crime and counter terrorism division, said: 'We remain resolute in ensuring the integrity of any possible future prosecutions and continue to liaise closely with the Metropolitan Police Service as their investigation works towards an evidential file being passed to us.'
Bereaved and survivors have long campaigned for criminal charges to be brought over the disaster.
Police and prosecutors have previously said investigators would need until the end of 2025 to complete their inquiry, with final decisions on potential criminal charges by the end of 2026.
The near 10-year wait for justice has been described by families as 'unbearable'.

During a hearing at the Old Bailey on Thursday, Judge Sarah Munro KC issued a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act and a restriction order under Section 41 – meaning Naveed can be detained indefinitely. At the time of the offence, Naveed, who has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was experiencing a "psychotic" episode – while her mental health had "deteriorated" in the days leading up to the attack, the court heard. Prosecutor Kerry Broome informed the court that Naveed believed she had connections to the Royal family and was the daughter of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed. After the attack, Naveed told her brother "she was Jesus and had been sent to eliminate evil from the world", and later said to police "the devil attacked me last night and I won," Ms Broome stated. The court heard Naveed had also told police she "slept in coffins", and that Jesus had resurrected her from the dead. The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after Mr Brown's body was discovered beneath a dressing gown in the lounge of the property he shared with Naveed in Polsted Road, Lewisham, south-east London. The household cat, Snow, was also found dead having been stabbed in the neck. Ms Broome said of a previous account of the attack given by the defendant: "She believed she had seen the deceased kill his mother and that the deceased was evil. She heard a voice telling her to kill him three times," she said, adding that Naveed struck Mr Brown with a pan and then strangled him. "She believed the evil spirit had jumped out of the deceased and into the cat. She got a knife and she cut the cat's neck," Mr Broome added. The pair had lived together at Polsted Road for several years, during which Mr Brown was convinced to put the property, which he had inherited from his parents, in both his and Naveed's names, the prosecutor said. The house was renovated and tenants were taken in, which Naveed orchestrated, the court heard. In the days leading up to the attack, Naveed's family were concerned at the state of her mental health – leading them to call 111 and call an ambulance, the hearing was told. Sentencing, Judge Munro told the defendant: "You attacked Chris between around 11pm and 11.50pm on August 14. You hit Chris a number of times to the head with a saucepan which broke in the process; you then sat on him breaking his ribs and strangled him. "You then slit the cat's throat before leaving Chris covered in a dressing gown alone and dead or dying in the living room property where he was found by Mr Rizwan (a lodger) when he returned to the house at 2.15am on 15th. You left a bloodied knife with which you had cut the cat's throat nearby." She continued: "The consultant forensic psychiatrist was of the view that the injuries fitted your account which shows that you were conscious of exactly what you were doing as you killed Chris." The judge revealed two psychiatrists had reached the same conclusion regarding paranoid schizophrenia and that Naveed possessed "no insight" into her mental health, diagnosis or symptoms. Naveed had repeatedly turned violent during earlier hospital stays and had stopped taking her prescribed medication for a year before the fatal attack, the court was told. The accused was a regular cannabis user which worsened her condition but did not trigger her psychosis, psychiatrists concluded, the judge stated. Factors reducing her sentence beyond Naveed's mental illness included her clean criminal record, whilst aggravating elements included her use of strangulation and a weapon, the judge noted. A post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Brown, who worked as a solicitor, died from blunt force trauma. In an emotional statement, a colleague from Mr Brown's legal practice told the hearing that the victim would have assisted anyone in need, saying that Naveed had stolen any "future memories". She stated: "He wasn't just a 72-year-old-man tragically killed by his housemate, he was a solicitor, a boss, a partner, a kind man." In a statement read out by Ms Broome, Mr Brown's cousin described him as a "kind and caring person" who would go out of his way to help his family and his clients. Naveed attended the hearing via video-link and only spoke to confirm her identity.

Labour was accused of giving 'free rein' to criminals on Thursday as shoplifting, muggings and fraud hit the highest levels since records began. Shock figures reveal Britain is in the grip of a 'retail crime epidemic' with one theft recorded every minute for the first time in history. Shoplifting levels have doubled since the pandemic and rocketed by 20 per cent since the Government came into power last year. At the same time, street muggings for mobile phones and handbags have spiralled, with a 15 per cent rise in personal theft to a record 151,220 offences. Critics accused Keir Starmer of ushering in a soft justice crimewave after releasing thousands of thieves early from prisons at a time of falling police numbers. Police chiefs are warning of more cuts to come due to a lack of funding. Office for National Statistics figures show that shoplifting hit a record high of 530,643 offences reported to police in the year to March, a 20 per cent increase on the last year's total of 444,022. That equates to more than 10,000 thefts a week, or 1,454 a day, which is the highest level since records began in 2003. The Mail has campaigned for police to crackdown on shoplifting, with the British Retail Consortium calculating retailers are losing £2.2billion a year. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: 'Under Labour, crime is up 7 per cent, shoplifting has surged by 20 per cent, and under Labour's London Mayor, over 60 per cent of all personal thefts now happen in the capital. 'In government, the Conservatives cut crime by over 50 per cent, the direct result of record officer numbers, record funding, and real powers to keep the public safe.' David Spencer, head of crime and justice at the Policy Exchange think tank said: 'There is a property crimewave going on, driven by a failure on the part of police, the Government and the criminal justice system to take these matters seriously. 'There needs to be a clear message that if you commit a crime you are going to prison.' Association of Convenience Stores chief executive James Lowman said: 'Offenders are being given free rein, acting with a complete confidence they will not be apprehended.' He pointed to the disparity between offences recorded by the police and the number reported by shops, adding: 'Retailers won't report crime if they have no faith in it being investigated.' President of the Federation of Independent Retailers Hetal Patel said a survey suggested 72 per cent of members had been hit by shoplifting and break-ins. Earlier this month, Yvette Cooper announced plans for extra officers to be deployed in 500 towns in a blitz on shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. On Thursday, the Home Secretary hailed falls in violence and knife-enabled assaults by four per cent in the ONS figures, adding: 'Overall charge rates are rising so more criminals are facing justice. That is welcome progress.'
