Two brothers in miracle escape from Texas floods after they swam for their lives as water reached top bunk in camp cabin

TWO brave young brothers have told of their gutsy escape from the Texas floods - which have killed at least 50 and left dozens missing.
Piers and Ruffin Boyett were asleep in the cabin at Camp La Junta on the bank of the Guadeloupe River when it was hit by a wall of water at 4am.

Further down the river, Camp Mystic - a Christian camp hosting around 750 girls - was also swamped, and over 20 girls are still missing.
They awoke to find water rising rapidly around them - and were forced to make a split-second decision.
The plucky pair knew immediately that they had to swim.
Younger brother Piers told KSAT: "The flood started getting bigger.

"We had bunk beds in our cabins and [the water] was going up to the top bunk and we had one choice — and we had to swim out of our cabin.'
Ruffin, the elder one, said: 'I had a first-hand view of the flood.
"The cabins were flooding and the walls, they broke down.
'All of the campers in those cabins had to go up on the rafters and wait there until they could swim out."
The brothers fought through the water to reach another cabin on higher ground.
They waited there until a rescue bus arrived to take them away from the Guadeloupe River and back to safety.

Whilst the Boyetts made it out of the water, not everyone has been so lucky.
A Texas dad-of-two died while valiantly trying to save his family from the floods - after having is arm almost cut "clean off".
Julian Ryan, 27, was with his family in their trailer home when the surging waters hit.
His mother, fiance Christinia, six-year-old and 13-month-old were all huddled in the bedroom after being shaken awake at 4am on Friday.
Christinia told KHOU: 'It just started pouring in, and we had to fight the door to get it closed to make sure not too much got in."

The two kids were sitting on a floating mattress when the door of the bedroom burst open and water cascaded in.
It was then Ryan took a bold decision to save his family.
The dad punched a hole in one of the bedroom windows - but the shattered glass severed an artery and almost cut the limb "clean off".
With blood spurting from the wound and emergency crews unable to reach the house, Julian told his family: "I'm sorry, I'm not going to make it. I love y'all."

The waters continued to rise and the trailer was eventually broken in half - allowing the rest of the family to escape.
Christinia said: 'He was the best father, and was always such a happy person who was never above helping people, no matter what it cost.
A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family after they lost Julian, and it has so far raised almost $30,000.
It reads: 'Julian gave his life for his family, passing as a true hero. While his family is eternally grateful for his sacrifice, they are shattered by their loss."
Rescuers are still scouring the devastated landscape in central Texas, but hopes of finding survivors are fast dwindling.

Larry Leitha, Kerr County sheriff, said on Saturday: "We have recovered 43 deceased individuals in Kerr County.
"Among these who are deceased we have 28 adults and 15 children."
Multiple people lost their lives in other counties, bringing the current confirmed death toll to 50 - though this is sadly expected to rise.
The most desperate search is for a group of school-age girls who went missing from Camp Mystic - a Christian summer camp near the river.
Heartbreaking photos from the wrecked site show sodden mattresses and teddies strewn across dormitories.
On Saturday, Sheriff Leitha said 27 of the children were still missing.

Texas flood maps show how deadly disaster unfolded at Camp Mystic
Flash floods have swept across Kerr County in central Texas, killing at least 51 people including 15 children. Some 27 children have been reported missing from Camp Mystic, a Christian girl's camp on the Guadalupe River, which rose more than eight metres in less than an hour on Thursday. Several towns have been devastated by the severe floods, with 850 people evacuated from the area. According to local new sources, five victims have been identified at the camp, including director Richard 'Dick' Eastland. Among those that have died is eight-year-old camper Renee Smajstrla, whose family said in a statement: 'We are thankful she was with her friends and having the time of her life, as evidenced by this picture from yesterday. She will forever be living her best life at Camp Mystic.' The floods also claimed the life of Jane Ragsdale, the director of another camp, Heart O' The Hills. Camp Mystic is on the Guadalupe River near Hunt in Kerr County, central Texas. At least 27 children were reported missing on the site after the river burst its banks, having risen eight metres overnight on Thursday. The severe weather took campers by surprise as they celebrated the Fourth of July holiday. Thirteen-year-old Elinor Lester, one of hundreds of campers at Mystic, said the centre was 'completely destroyed'. She said some of her campmates were taken away by ambulance. 'It was really scary', she added. Grim pictures of the camp after the disaster struck showed rooms deluged with muddy water and pieces of bedding and clothing strewn around. A young girl was also pictured clinging to a tree, before being taken to safety by rescue workers. Camp Mystic is a private Christian summer girls camp on the banks of the Guadalupe River in west central Texas. It was established in 1926 on a site of cypress, oak and pecan trees. According to the camp's website, its mission is to provide girls with a 'wholesome Christian atmosphere in which they can develop outstanding personal qualities and self-esteem'. The camp was in the first week of its 'second term' which was scheduled to run from June 29 to July 26. It is owned and led by Dick and Tweety Eastland, who have been at Camp Mystic since 1976. They are the third generation to manage the camp, which has been in their family since 1939. Around 700 girls were staying at Camp Mystic at the time of the flood. Wardens began to rescue campers from midday on Friday after initially being unable to access the site. Renee Smajstrla was the first victim at the camp confirmed dead following the deluge. Her uncle Shawn Salta wrote on Facebook: 'Thank you to all our friends and family for all the prayers and outreach. 'Renee has been found and while not the outcome we prayed for, the social media outreach likely assisted the first responders in helping to identify her so quickly. 'We are thankful she was with her friends and having the time of her life, as evidenced by this picture from yesterday. She will forever be living her best life at Camp Mystic. Please continue to pray for the other families in Kerrville.' Richard 'Dick' Eastland, the director of the camp, was also among identified as dead. Lila Bonner, nine, was also among five victims at Camp Mystic, along with Eloise Peck, eight. Both attended the same primary school. Eloise's mother Missy told Fox4News: 'Eloise was literally friends with anyone. 'Eloise had a family who loved her fiercely for the 8 years she was with us. Especially her Mommy.' The other two victims were identified as Sarah Marsh and Janie Hunt. Donald Trump said he and First Lady Melania were 'praying' for the victims of the flooding. He wrote on Truth Social: 'The Trump Administration is working with State and Local Officials on the ground in Texas in response to the tragic flooding that took place yesterday. 'Melania and I are praying for all of the families impacted by this horrible tragedy. Our Brave First Responders are on site doing what they do best. GOD BLESS THE FAMILIES, AND GOD BLESS TEXAS!' Vice President JD Vance said in a message on X: 'Our nation's heart breaks for the victims in Texas and their families. Just an incomprehensible tragedy. 'I hope everyone affected knows they're in the prayers of my family, and of millions of Americans.' Kerr County Sheriff Larry L. Leitha told a press conference in Texas: 'Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones. 'We are working hard to locate anyone who is still missing and to ensure they are safe.' Texas State Governor Greg Abbott wrote yesterday on X: 'Today I visited Camp Mystic. It, and the river running beside it, were horrendously ravaged in ways unlike I've seen in any natural disaster. 'The height the rushing water reached to the top of cabins was shocking. We won't stop until we find every girl who was in those cabins.' Further rain is expected in parts of Texas on Sunday, with a flood alert still in place until 1pm local time. She said: "I got quoted £2,500 to wrap my kitchen. "I just wasn't feeling the glossy white anymore. It felt a bit clinical and dated. "I was feeling a little bit delusional and impulsive, so I was like, 'I'm gonna do it myself.'" Maisie started her transformation by taking a picture of her kitchen and asking AI what colour would look best. The AI suggested a dark wood effect for the counters, so Maisie did exactly that and bought a bunch of vinyl sheets to cover her kitchen. Maisie used the Fablon Wood Effect Sticky Back Plastic from Dunelm in Deep Walnut, which cost just £5 a roll. It was going smoothly until Maisie got to the cupboard and drawers and she realised how tricky applying the vinyl can be. "I can see why people charge the amount they do, because this is not easy," she added. Maisie used an array of tools to get the vinyl to stick on smoothly; she used a hair dryer to make sure no air got in and then an old ID card to smooth out any bubbles. While the job took ages and wasn't the easiest, the end results were worth it. Her kitchen went from clinically white to homely in a matter of hours. She added: "Honestly so proud of myself that I did this for under £100 even if it cost me my patience and sanity." The clip soon went viral on her TikTok account @maisabellaa with over 1.4 million views and 98k likes. People were quick to praise Maisie for her DIY skills and loved the new kitchen.
