What to Watch at the Edinburgh Fringe
In conversations with performers and prospective festivalgoers before the Fringe's return on Friday, there was less feverish expectancy, perhaps because of the tough financial conditions that many acts are facing.
So, what's driving this year's crop of comedians, theater makers, dancers, circus performers and cabaret acts? My impression is that it's a desire to entertain in tricky times, to make people laugh, or perhaps make them think, through art.
From homegrown Scottish talent to internationally acclaimed acts, the program for the Fringe, which runs through Aug. 25, is packed with passionate performers. Open to a random page of the festival guide, or scroll haphazardly through the Fringe app, and you're likely to find one.
Or, simply use this guide.

Hollywood A-lister 'calls out' Meghan Markle and 'questions authenticity'
Meghan Markle has been "called out" by a Hollywood A-lister after the Duchess of Sussex was deemed the "new Martha Stewart". However, the real Martha Stewart took umbrage at the comparison, with the 83-year-old stating: "I hope she knows what she's talking about." As reported by the Daily Mail, she said: "Meghan, I don't really know very well. I hope she knows what she's talking about' Read more: Expert advice on the three things you need to check on your payslip to avoid losing money She added of the Duchess: 'Authenticity, to me, is everything, and to be authentic and knowledgeable about your subject matter is extremely important." Her comments come after Markle debuted her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, earlier this year. However, last month it was revealed the series failed to crack the streamer's top 300 shows. The show was described by Netflix as following the Duchess of Sussex while she "invites friends and famous guests to a beautiful California estate, where she shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips." The docuseries saw the 43-year-old share her "personal tips and tricks", while "embracing playfulness over perfection" and "highlighting how to create beauty in unexpected ways". The lifestyle programme was quickly lambasted, with Marina Hyde from The Guardian writing: "The mildest way to describe this show is as a ghastly artefact of a particular cultural era that recently met its apocalypse." Newly released figures from Netflix show it has been watched 5.3 million times, and while that may seem impressive on the surface, it shockingly ranks it number 383 in the list of the streaming service's most-viewed shows. For context, it is ranked alongside the second series of the BBC series Peaky Blinders and series four of Suits, which also starred Meghan at the time. The show has an abysmal rating of 36% on the aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes and 3.2 on IMDb. The show's reception left many wondering if Netflix would even bother continuing their partnership with the Duchess and Prince Harry, after signing a reported $100 million deal with the platform in 2020. Undeterred, the streaming juggernaut has renewed the saccharine show for a second season, with Meghan taking to Instagram to share the news earlier this year. She wrote "Oh, how I love ASMR! If you're loving Season 1, just wait until you see the fun we cooked up in Season 2! "Thanks for joining the party, and an endless thanks to the amazing team and crew who helped bring it all to life!'

Phillips was previously married to Autumn Kelly from 2018 to 2021NEED TO KNOW Peter Philips, the eldest grandchild of Queen Elizabeth, announced his engagement to Harriet Sperling on Aug. 1 A diamond expert tells PEOPLE that the ring appears to be "a timeless trilogy design, likely showcasing a central oval or round diamond, flanked by trapeze-cut or triangular side stones" Philips was previously married to Autumn Kelly from 2008 to 2021Peter Philips announced his engagement to pediatric nurse Harriet Sperling on Friday, meaning another royal wedding is on the way. 'Mr. Peter Phillips, the son of HRH The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips, and Ms. Harriet Sperling, daughter of the late Mr. Rupert Sanders and Mrs. Mary Sanders of Gloucestershire, have today confirmed their official engagement,' the couple's spokesperson said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. 'Both families were informed jointly of the announcement and were delighted with the wonderful news of their engagement. Their Majesties The King and Queen, The Prince and Princess of Wales have been informed of the announcement," the statement continued. "No date has officially been set for the wedding." Peter, 47, popped the question to Harriet, 45, with a stunning ring that 77 Diamonds co-founder Tobias Kormind said "appears to be a timeless trilogy design, likely showcasing a central oval or round diamond, flanked by trapeze-cut or triangular side stones." "While an exact valuation would require a clearer image and knowledge of its provenance, a similar design with diamonds of comparable quality and size crafted at 77 Diamonds would typically be priced from around £10,000, with the final price reflecting individual choices in cut, carat and craftsmanship," the diamond expert added. Peter, the son of Princess Anne and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips, was previously married to Autumn Kelly from 2008 to 2021. The former couple share two daughters, Savannah, 14, and Isla, 13. Harriet is from a prominent English line herself, as she descends from the Courage family, who founded the well-known Courage Brewery, according to the Daily Mail. Hello! reported that she also has a daughter, named Georgia. Peter and Harriet made their public debut as a couple in May 2024 at the Badminton Horse Trials in Gloucestershire, U.K. He introduced his now-fiancée to King Charles and Queen Camilla later that summer, indicating that the two were getting serious. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! Though he is the eldest grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth and was fifth in line to the throne when he was born in 1977, Peter holds no royal titles. Princess Anne made the decision not to bestow titles on him and his younger sister, Zara, in order to help them lead more normal lives. "I think it was probably easier for them, and I think most people would argue that there are downsides to having titles," she told Vanity Fair in 2020. "So I think that was probably the right thing to do." Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

Rebecca Loos shares 'special' details about David Beckham alleged 'affair' on Celebrity SAS
David Beckham's ex-PA has addressed the scandal on the Channel 4 reality show. Rebecca Loos has addressed the David Beckham "affair" scandal in scenes set to air on Celebrity SAS as she admitted: "He always made me feel very special." The former personal assistant (PA), 48, is starring on Channel 4's toughest reality show, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. It's a step back into public life after she shied away from it. It's been more than 20 years since Loos sold her story in 2004 to the now-defunct newspaper News of the World, claiming she had an affair with the footballer who is married to Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham; the Beckhams have always denied the claims. Now Loos' life looks totally different: she's moved to Norway, works as a yoga teacher and has children of her own. Her peace and quiet was disturbed when Beckham and his wife Victoria spoke about the impact the scandal had on their marriage in their Netflix docuseries in 2023. It isn't long before Loos brings up the Beckham situation on Celebrity SAS as seen in scenes on Sunday. "I wouldn't say the British press have been kind in how they have portrayed me because of the Beckham situation," she told the cameras for Celebrity SAS. "I have been accused of being a liar, a slut, a sleazy senorita but I'm not used to being shouted at by bulky men so that's new for me!" After failing the first task, Loos faces a grilling from the Directing Staff where she talks about the scandal. The yoga teacher said she has no regrets. "Lessons learned," she said, alluding to the Beckham scenario. "If I went back in time of course [I'd do things differently]." Rebecca Loos speaks about David Beckham scandal Asked how she felt about it, she reveals: "I was his PA, personal assistant. He always made me feel very special. But it was no big deal, I still did my job. I didn't fancy him that much in the beginning anyway. On the first night I was with him, I said to him, 'You must do this all the time'. "I thought I was a little bit of fun for him. He said to me, 'No I've never done this before.' He could have said, 'Yeah I've had loads of girls. I'm just having some fun.' Fine by me, I know where I'm going in." Loos says she didn't expect anything. "The fact that he lied to me the whole time, that p***ed me off," she says. The former PA explains why she gave that tell-all interview to the News of the World. She says: "I was unhappy with the way I had been treated. So I didn't want to go around anymore, carrying this secret. Rumours that were spreading, journalists were getting in touch, in the end I decided it was better it comes from me. So I gave an interview, thinking it would be something and it ended up being something else. I spent a few years trying to see if I can get it back." Beckham's ex-PA went through 'hell' With time to reflect on her own, Loos claims it was unfair Beckham's life flourished while she went through "hell". She says: "I do look back at who i was in my 20s and the only ever focus is on the f***ing beckham situation. It felt injust [unjust] that my life was pretty hell and his career and his life kept blossoming. That didn't feel quite right, still doesn't. I think I've taken most of the blame for what happened, rightly so it was part of my life. We were two. He was older of me and he was my boss." She adds: "You can't change the things that happened is my attitude. I roll my sleeves and get on with it. Everything I have experienced has brought me to where I am today. It's made me a little bit stronger." Why is Rebecca Loos speaking out now? The Netflix documentary Beckham seems to be the driving factor behind her speaking out on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. She says: "When the Beckham documentary [Netflix's Beckham] came out, I was taken completely by surprise. Him trying to portray an image of perfection that was nothing like reality… "The way our relationship was spoken about and the fact that no responsibility for his actions was reignited. It was like reliving 2004 all over again except this time we have the added dynamic of social media." What have the Beckhams said? In 2023, the Beckhams spoke about the scandal on their Netflix docuseries. They have always denied the affair. Speaking openly about it for the first time, they shared the "hurt" and the impact the headlines had on their marriage. Mrs Beckham said: "It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us. Here's the thing — we were against each other if I'm being completely honest. You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other. "But when we were in Spain, it didn't really feel like we had each other either. And that's sad. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was a nightmare. It was an absolute circus — and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town right? Unless you're in it." Her husband added: "Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult. But we're fighters, and at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family, but it was worth fighting for. Ultimately it is our private life." Yahoo UK has reached out to David Beckham and Victoria Beckham's representatives for further comment. Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins will return to our screens on Channel 4 at 9pm on August 3.
