Kempsey preview: Trainer John Shelton expecting strong showing from Hayley's Rocket
Monday's wearer of Riverdale's red, white and yellow silks is Hayley's Rocket which is housed at Grafton by Kosciuskzo winning trainer John Shelton for close friend Brian Paine whose father, Ross, owned the aforementioned multiple stakes-winner.
Bought in New Zealand as a yearling, Riverdale won over $500,000 in prizemoney, much of which as a consequence of his Epsom Handicap-Ampol Stakes (now the Cantala Stakes) double in 1984.
Riverdale also won the Warwick Stakes, Gosford Gold Cup as well as a triumphant 'home town' win in the Grafton Cup.
Brian Paine and wife Elizabeth together shelled out $14,000 for Hayley's Rocket at the 2023 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
A daughter of Blue Diamond winner Written By out of a mare by Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Bradbury's Luck, Hayley's Rocket is bred on a rare double-cross of Geoff and Beryl White's former crack colt, Iglesia.
The Paine's would have been suitably buoyed by their filly's eye-catching debut in a deep Super Maiden on the recent South Grafton Cup undercard.
'I thought she went pretty good,'' Shelton said. 'She didn't have a lot of luck in the run, she was caught a little bit wide most of the race and she battled on to the line.
'She's got a good gate on Monday. There is a fair bit of depth in that maiden but she should acquit herself quite well.'
Shelton meanwhile has taken over the training duties of regally-bred former Goulburn resident Shine Like It Does whose value is well and truly 'INXS' of her current earnings of $52,100 given she is a grand-daughter of Dane Ripper.
Shine Like It Does broke her maiden at Moruya on June 27 prior to her closing fourth in a Class 2 mile at Grafton on Ramornie Day when saddled-up by Goulburn trainer Lucy Longmire.
'It was a credible run,'' Shelton said. 'I don't know what it is like on wet ground.
'Lucy left her up here for a couple of runs just to see what happens up here.
'She's done well since she has been here and is coming back from a Class 2 to a Benchmark 58.
'She's got a good rider (Luke Rolls) but she hasn't drawn that well so we'll just play it by ear.'
Shelton's other runner on the final Northern Rivers district meeting on the 2024/25 season is three-year-old gelding Sources Link which lines up in the WIN Network Benchmark 58 Handicap (1450m).
The son of Team Hawkes' Silver Slipper winner Headwater had his first five runs in Victoria under the care of Cox Plate winning trainer, Greg Eurell.
Sources Link turned in a new P.B when making his NSW and Shelton stable debut in a 1000m Country Maiden, also on Ramornie Day.
His Monday mission is the TAB.com.au Plate over 1250m.
'His run was good the other day, he just got run off his feet,'' Shelton said.
'I thought he might be a little bit fresh but he looks like he wants 1200 or 1400m.
'We bought him as a second-hand horse out of Melbourne and he'll pay his way I think.'
Sources Link will be ridden by Shelton's former apprentice, Ben Looker, whose tally of winners for his old boss currently stands at 119 with almost 200 placings.

Fans in a frenzy at possibility Tomorrowland could come to Australia in 2026
Eagle-eyed fans believe Tomorrowland, or at least an offshoot of the world-famous electronic dance music festival, is Australia-bound for the first time in 2026. Attendees walking towards the CORE stage at this year's festival in Belgium over the weekend spotted a map installation that looked to be teasing upcoming locations. Among them was Melbourne, which appeared as a potential host in November 2026. A video of the map was shared on TikTok, where it has racked up more than 120,000 likes. Many believe at the very least Tomorrowland's CORE stage is on its way as part of a boutique event series. 'I wanna go so freaking bad,' one person said. If it does pan out that way, it would mark the bucket-list festival's Australian debut. If must be said that there is no confirmation at this stage. has reached out to Tomorrowland representatives for details but are yet to hear back. The TikTok video also suggested a festival could be held in Los Angeles in May 2026. Tomorrowland is held annually in Boom, Belgium, attracting 400,000 festivalgoers from around the world. It was first held in 2005 and has grown to become one of the world's biggest music festivals. Just two days before the 2025 event was due to start, a raging fire destroyed the famous main stage. But heavy metal band Metallica came to the rescue, reportedly offering up some of their world tour stage equipment that was in storage to ensure the show could go on. Tomorrowland spin-off festivals have previously been held in the US, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

The Block 2025 Episode 2 recap: ‘Worst day on The Block'
Plumbing leaks, contestant waterworks and rain clouds all hit The Block just in time for the inaugural Waterproof Wednesday of season 21. Just two days into their Block experience and the contestants are discovering it's not all rainbow parades. An emotional Taz declared it his 'worst day on The Block'. That's not saying much given he'd only been on site two days (the first of which involved joining the local Chill Out festival). 'Gone are the days of dancing in my budgies in the back of a float,' he sighed wistfully. 'It's just the twists and turns which get you. You think you are going well one second. The next, three curve balls are thrown at you. You have just got to be ready for everything.' Adjusting to the new hi-vis uniform is proving to be a work-in-progress for the West Australian cop, who mistakenly referred to his limited DIY experience as a 'DUI' (that's police speak for drink driving). The father-of-two has already developed a reputation for his worksite lingo slip ups, referring to Villaboards as 'vanilla boards' and the Speedhorse as a 'seahorse' to the great mirth of wife Britt and Foreman Dan. 'Look there might be times where I am calling something the wrong tool or using the wrong terminology,' he laughed, acknowledging that he's got more experience negotiating with crims than carpenters. The lead-up to The Block's most notorious deadline (Waterproof Wednesday) wasn't plain sailing for Britt and Taz, who had to move their showerhead to be compliant. It was a similar story for their neighbours Sonny and Alicia who likewise had to adjust their vision. Firstly, Alicia was fearful that their bathroom would be 'basic bitch' with a vanity too large to accommodate fancy lighting either side of it. Then, with limited glass supplies available, they were backed into a corner and forced to move their shower head to no longer need a screen to be compliant. 'I am just not used to working like this because I am not in the trade,' Alicia said through tears about having to make decisions on the fly that compromised her artistic vision. 'I am pretty sure that we will be the only team without glass.' Having gotten past that speed bump, the couple then hit another when their waterproofing team got waylaid for five hours by an onsite safety training session. Thankfully, their inspections went off without a hitch. As did Can and Han's efforts along with Emma and Ben's bathroom. No mean feat given the experienced house flippers had fallen well behind the pack all day. Their slow start earned the Victorians some tough love from host Scotty Cam. But Emma and Ben were nonplussed by the fuss. 'What's the point of worrying,' Ben shrugged, even after Scotty revealed there would be no Hipages army of tradies coming to the rescue in an emergency this year. Another big change is the emergence of Gmac as a major player. With Foreman Keith hanging up his toolbelt, it now falls to Site Supervisor Gmac to step into the void and conduct the gruff inspections. Comparing the inspector to Harry Potter's Professor Snape, Mat said G Mac made him nervous because he could literally bring a wall down with one look. And so he did, forcing the boys to remove plasterboards and replace them with Villaboard before they could get his tick to start waterproofing. It was otherwise confidence central over at House Five where Mat wasn't letting a water leak dampen his spirits. Shunning traditional fans and heaters, Mat turned to his tool of choice to eradicate moisture from the floor: his trusty hairdryer. Mat had another secret weapon at his disposal for this week's room reveal. Enthusing to a sceptical Robby: 'I've got the superpower of being gay so I know how to style things. 'I know how to pick good things. I've got great taste. I can style a tile. It is a super power. There's not many gays with bad fashion.' The best buddies are also playing the long game. And so, it was already full steam ahead on their plan for their wine cellar, having already ticked off two of the three approvals needed to start digging their hole. With just the council left to sign off, the biggest hurdle would now be finding a spare $100k to fund the underground plot. And Mat mused: 'If we spend money on the cellar and don't win anything we are just going to end up with a big mud hole.'

Collingwood forward Jordan De Goey and his former reality TV star girlfriend Aisha Jade McKinnon have announced the 'surprise' news they are expecting a baby girl.
