Hunter ready for Aldcroft to get her happy ending at Rugby World Cup
Former England skipper Sarah Hunter believes Zoe Aldcroft deserves a happy World Cup ending at the 2025 Rugby World Cup.
The Scarborough native was forced off with a concussion in the first half of the World Cup final three years ago as England went on to lose to hosts New Zealand.
Aldcroft, who plays at lock, was named England captain earlier this year, nine years on from her Red Roses debut and will be reaming of lifting the trophy come September.
'Zoe Aldcroft is an unbelievable player, I think she just underestimates the presence that she has,' Hunter said. 'I am in awe when I watch her train; she is a machine.
'Her ability to just go to places where other people don't, her impact in a game and her work rate.
'The engine that she has, a lot of the unseen work she does but then she will have a moment of brilliance.
'She galvanises the team around her, when she speaks people listen. People can't not be inspired by the way she plays the game, the way she puts her body on the line.'
Fresh threads for a big year 💙

Hunter has gone from captaining Aldcroft to coaching her, serving as England's defence coach since 2023.
She transitioned into coaching immediately after retiring and has been supported by the Gallagher High Performance Academy.
The initiative run by World Rugby will have helped almost 50 female coaches earn valuable coaching experience with their unions by the end of the 2025 Rugby World Cup, which begins on 22 August in Sunderland.
Aldcroft is expected to lead England at a home World Cup, which the Red Roses enter the tournament as the overwhelming favourites and world number ones.
Hunter added: 'Different coaches have different reasons of why they select their captain, but when you watch her play, she is definitely someone who is the standard bearer of how you want the game to be played.
'She is the one who you think 'I will follow you into battle', and quite often as captain that is what you want.
'You want someone out there, leading the charges, in front, Zoe Aldcroft will never take a backward step.
'The way she galvanises the team, the way she motivates them, she is just brilliant all-round.
'I really hope she gets the World Cup ending she deserves this time around, she got taken off in the final through a concussion, she is a pretty special player.'

Lionesses arrive home to celebrate historic back-to-back Euros wins
England players and fans were celebrating until late into Sunday night after their historic victory over Spain before returning home and attending a reception at Downing Street on Monday. ITV News Sports Editor has the latest England's women's team have returned home to excited fans after an historic Euros win in Switzerland. They beat Spain 3-1 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at the final, with Chloe Kelly netting the winning shot, to land back-to-back Euros titles. Fans waited for hours outside Southend Airport for the team to arrive and cheered loudly when they touched down. The women then attended a reception at Downing Street with the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner. The team will celebrate with the public during an open-top bus procession in central London on Tuesday. Homecoming celebrations start at 12.10pm and will travel along The Mall. "We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Central London tomorrow for the Homecoming celebrations," the FA said in a statement on X. There will then be a ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace from 12.30, with the event set to wrap up around 1pm. Fans can attend for free, and it will be broadcast live on ITV, BBC and Sky. The reception at Downing Street was due to begin about 5PM but the event was pushed back after the Lionesses' plane from Switzerland was delayed. The red carpet was rolled out at No 10 Downing Street for the team's arrival just before 7PM. England manager Sarina Wiegman addressed the reception, apologising for giving England supporters "lots of heart attacks". "You all made it through and we made it through and that's why we're here now," she said. 'The team is just incredible, we won the Euros but making the final, we're already legendary. "It's surreal what has happened last night." Wiegman said while steps had been taken to improve access to women's football in England, the country was "not there yet" and needed more investment. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said the Lionesses had defended the title "with grit and with determination and skill". "You roared and I know I wasn't the only one roaring with you," she told guests at the reception. "You've made us all so, so proud. "Your performances have inspired a nation and lifted women's football to new heights." Players, coaches and Football Association representatives are in attendance, along with Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock. There have been calls for a bank holiday to mark the Lionesses' triumph, but the government suggested the team is too successful for that to be feasible. "If we had a bank holiday every time Lionesses won we'd never go to work," a government spokesperson said on Monday. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer previously backed calls for a bank holiday when the team reached the finals of the World Cup in 2023. He said the Lionesses had 'once again captured the hearts of the nation' and were 'an inspiration for young people across the country'. To celebrate the win, the Royal Mail will mark the occasion with a congratulatory postmark – which will be applied to stamped mail across the UK from Monday to Friday. One unofficial team member who joined in with the celebrations was Reggie the Cavapoo, who belongs to the owner of Cheals on Wheels, a mobile barista bar that accompanied the Lionesses in Switzerland. The company wrote on Instagram that Reggie had 'gone international' and was 'soaking up all the love (and sneaky treats) from the team' in Switzerland.

Son of Manchester United legend hits the target for Red Devils as SuperCup NI gets under way
Kai Rooney, son of the club's all-time record goalscorer and former SuperCup NI player himself Wayne, scored in a 3-0 win over West Cork Academy. They meet Rangers in a glamour game at the Coleraine Showgrounds tonight after a 1,000 crowd in sun-splashed Bushmills were treated to an impressive performance from a player with the perfect name to play for Scottish giants. Kyle Glasgow struck twice, his second a penalty, in a 5-0 win over County Tyrone, who conceded the final three goals late on. Substitute Ruairidh Hall also scored twice. County Down's Mason Ayre is hoping to fire his team all the way to the SuperCup NI Premier Final after he scored two spectacular goals in a 4-2 win over Intercontinental FA. Ayre came off the bench to hit a stunning half-volley before firing home a superb free-kick in injury-time after the American side had twice come from a goal down. Zak Magowan hit a wonderful free-kick strike himself midway through the first-half before the impressive Ben Quirino equalised from the penalty spot. Shea Trainor added to the array of special goals to restore Down's lead only for Sam Winik to reply from a low driven corner after an impressive save by Max Sykes. 'I don't usually score those too often, it was good to score both,' said Ayre. 'It's much more of a buzz when you score goals like that. 'Hopefully, we can make it all the way to the Final.' County Down now meet 2024 winners Brighton, who were 2-1 winners over County Armagh who the Seagulls defeated in the Final. AFC Bournemouth head Group B after they won 3-0 against County Fermanagh, and Hamilton Academical came from behind to draw 1-1 with Mexican side Tigres after missing a first-half penalty. County Londonderry won 2-1 in their derby with County Antrim and now face Southampton, 2-0 winners against Ichifuna of Japan. Mixed emotions for manager Darragh Peden following County Armagh Juniors' victory Darragh Peden confessed to being torn between the joy of victory and frustration over County Armagh Juniors' performance despite a winning start to the SuperCup NI. A goal from Alfie Davidson five minutes from time, when he let the ball run across his body before unleashing a shot into the bottom corner of the net, gave Armagh a 1-0 victory in their derby against County Tyrone. Up to then, it had been the quality of rival goalkeepers Aidan Cunningham of Armagh and Tyrone's Jake Morgan that kept the scoreline blank. 'I think we're a better quality team than what we showed,' said Peden. 'The coach in me is frustrated but I suppose the manager in me is feeling 'job done' and now we move on to the next game. 'It's always a balance between winning games and trying to do it with a wee bit more flair. For me, as Juniors manager, it is more than just results; it's an experience at the SuperCup.' That win was key for Armagh as their final Group A opponents Blackburn Rovers defeated Crewe Alexandra 4-1. It was a tough start for County Down, who gradually grew into their game against St Patrick's Athletic before going down to two second-half goals from Conor Hudson and Gethin Davies. West Ham and Plymouth Argyle finished 2-2 in the other Group D encounter. County Fermanagh also lost to southern opposition, 4-1 to Bohemians in Group C, while Celtic won 4-2 over Chicago City. Michael Mulholland scored twice for County Antrim while Fionnbharr Stiobhard got the third in a 3-0 win over County Londonderry, setting them up perfectly for today's clash with Tottenham Hotspur, who were 5-2 winners over Charlton Athletic with Ashiah Haughton-Sinclair scoring four of the Spurs goals. Crusaders' quest to retain Minor crown suffers blow after defeat to Shamrock Rovers Defending champions Crusaders' hopes of retaining their Minor title were dealt an early blow as they were defeated on the opening day at the SuperCup NI. While the Crues got off to the kind of start they didn't want, there were goals galore for two other Irish League clubs, who each hit four goals in their victories. The Crues were beaten 2-0 by Dublin giants Shamrock Rovers and that result sets up a hugely interesting Group A clash on day two as they now face Ballymena United in Castlerock today after the Sky Blues finished 4-2 winners over Ross County. Cliftonville also made an impressive start to the tournament by hitting four goals in their 4-1 success against Loughgall. That game was, however, overshadowed entertainment-wise by the other game in Group C as Leeds United and Surf Select from the USA shared six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw. The Reds now face Surf Select today. It is all to play for in Group B after both games finished level. Glenavon and Linfield battled to a scoreless draw, while Kilmarnock drew 1-1 with Al Jazira Club of the UAE. Coleraine and Blackburn Rovers will do battle for control of Group D when they meet in Bushmills after both were victorious in their opening games of the tournament. Blackburn were 3-0 winners over IDA Bermuda, while Coleraine managed to squeeze out a 1-0 victory over Shankill Juniors.

Sarina Wiegman urges more investment in women's game at Downing Street reception
England head coach Sarina Wiegman called for further investment in women's football to ensure the country remains a 'trailblazer' as her side celebrated their Euro 2025 success at a 'very, very special' reception at 10 Downing Street. After successfully defending their European crown with a penalty shoot-out victory over Spain in the tournament's showpiece in Basel on Sunday evening, the England team flew home to attend a reception hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock. The team arrived just before 7pm, with Number 10 decorated for the occasion with St George's flags draped over windows and bunting along the railings. As Wiegman rose to speak to those gathered in the Downing Street garden she joked that 'this is different from standing next to a pitch'. She added: 'I have to make my apologies (for giving) you lots of heart attacks. You all made it through and we made it through and that's why we're here now. 'The team is just incredible, we won the Euros but making the final, we're already legendary, what the team has done and the team behind the team. 'Thank you so much for having us here. It's very, very special to be here and to be in this very nice garden with the way you set it up with all these pictures, it makes it more special, it's the first moment it sinks in a little bit because it was surreal what happened last night.' Wiegman then used the moment to call for further investment in the women's game, with the Government due to announce a new package of measures to boost access to grassroots football. 'This incredible team won the Euros and then straightaway sent a letter to you, the Government, asking for attention and asking for access to football for all girls,' Wiegman said. 'Steps have been taken but we're not done yet, we have to keep moving forward and we need a little bit more. 'I heard we need to change some things about taxes…I think we have that confirmation tonight. So let's move forward. 'We need some more investment. We're not there yet. In England we're up there but England needs to stay the trailblazer, it needs to be the big example. The players first but also the FA, the clubs, the Government, the country, the fans – let's keep being the trailblazers.' In her own speech, Rayner congratulated Wiegman's team on defending their title 'with grit, with determination and with skill'. 'You roared, and I know I wasn't the only one roaring with you,' Rayner said. Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty for England in the shoot-out after goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made two outstanding saves. The game had gone to extra time and spot-kicks after Alessia Russo cancelled out the opener from Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey as it finished 1-1 following extra time. After almost a month of competition in Switzerland, the team's plane branded with the word 'home' touched down at Southend Airport on Monday afternoon. In a post on X, the team shared a photo of the Euros trophy draped in an England flag on a seat on the plane. Holding the trophy, captain Leah Williamson was first to step off the plane alongside Wiegman. Outside the airport, crowds were lined up to welcome the team and the trophy back home. A homecoming open-top bus parade follows in central London on Tuesday, where there will be a procession along The Mall and the celebration will finish with a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. A trip to the Palace or Windsor Castle may be on the cards for the winning squad as it is understood possible plans for a reception in the autumn are being explored by royal aides. Defender Jess Carter has not joined her team-mates for the celebrations in London as she has returned to the United States ahead of Gotham FC's NWSL match against the Chicago Stars on Saturday.
