‘Gori pakori privilege': Russian woman's video on ‘normal Indian life' goes viral, but one point divides the Internet

Indian Express12 hours ago
A reel by a Russian woman living in Bengaluru has struck a chord online, sparking conversations about cultural adaptation, privilege, and everyday Indian habits. The video, posted by content creator Iuliia Aslamova, has gone viral with over five million views, offering a glimpse into what she calls her 'absolutely normal' Indian lifestyle, though not everyone agrees with her take.
Captioned 'Here's my list of absolutely normal things for yours #russianindian,' the reel walks viewers through a series of habits she's picked up while living in India – many of which might raise eyebrows outside the country, but feel perfectly natural to her now.
She starts with a big one: living with her in-laws. Far from dreading it, she calls it a 'blessing,' explaining that she's grateful not to have to run the household alone. She also praises the Indian style of eating with hands – something she admits she never used to do, but now believes actually enhances the flavour of food.
Punctuality, too, has taken on a different meaning for her. A delay of 15 to 20 minutes is no longer a source of stress – she's simply adapted and works around it. What once felt strange — like having multiple domestic helpers — now feels like a clever and practical part of Indian life.
She's also found herself casually slipping into Hinglish and says she hopes to learn Hindi properly in the next year or two. Another habit she's come to embrace is bargaining – a skill she calls a 'superpower' and one of the most unexpected lessons she's picked up here. Rounding off her list, she mentions her love for masala chai and observes how so much in India – from movies to everyday chats – seems to orbit around the theme of love.

While many praised her for how well she's adjusted, the comments section quickly became a space for more complex discussions. Some lauded her for embracing the culture so fully, especially the acceptance of lateness and eating with hands. One user wrote, 'Amazing how you have adapted to Indian culture including acceptance of people being late.'
But not everyone was as impressed. A commenter pointed out the layers of privilege that might be at play, writing, 'See mam, you are a foreigner daughter-in-law because you get special treatment… Indian daughter-in-laws are always getting third class treatment. This is just NRI syndrome.' Another said, 'Eating with hands is okay. But why are you glorifying toxic things? Living with in-laws is a curse for most women… You are a gori pakori so you have 'privileges'.'
Others offered a more balanced take, acknowledging her experience while underlining that it doesn't reflect everyone's reality. 'I support all of them, except the first one. I think it's up to the couple and whom they choose to be with,' one user wrote.

Filmistan Studios sold for Rs 183 crore, AICWA urges Devendra Fadnavis to stop redevelopment into luxury towers: 'Save the livelihoods of lakhs of workers'

Filmistan Studios, one of Mumbai's oldest and most iconic film studios, has been officially sold to Arkade Developers for Rs 183 crore. The transaction was registered on July 3, marking the end of an era for a studio that helped shape the golden age of Hindi cinema. Once a thriving base for actors, technicians, and production houses, the Goregaon West property is now set to be redeveloped into ultra-luxury residential towers. Founded in 1943 by Sasadhar Mukherjee, grandfather to Kajol and Rani Mukerji , along with actor Ashok Kumar, Gyan Mukherjee, and Rai Bahadur Chunilal, Filmistan Studios emerged from a split with Bombay Talkies and quickly became a cornerstone of Hindi filmmaking. Back in the day, studios like Filmistan weren't just shooting spaces, they were full-fledged production houses employing actors and crew on monthly salaries. AICWA urges Devendra Fadnavis to intervene In the wake of the acquisition, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has written an open letter to Maharashtra's CM Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to halt the demolition and protect what they call a 'symbol of cinematic legacy.' The association has called for a Government Resolution (G.R.) to preserve the studio as a public cultural asset. 'Filmistan Studio... by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dommershausen: Gutes Hören sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung Gutes Hören Undo has been a workplace for lakhs of technicians, artists, junior artists, and workers… It is not just a physical structure; it is a symbol of cinematic legacy and the sweat and hard work of the working class behind the camera,' the AICWA letter read. Dharmesh Yelande Spotted At Filmistan Studio The association further warned that the loss of Filmistan, and other heritage studios at risk, would severely impact employment opportunities for daily wage workers, technicians, and artists who form the backbone of the entertainment industry. 'This is not just a fight to save land—it is a fight to protect dignity, heritage, and the livelihood of the backbone of our industry. Filmistan Studio was built with the blood, sweat, and dedication of workers... Unfortunately, the current owners have chosen profit over people.' Filmistan Studios to be turned into luxury towers Following the acquisition, Arkade Developers announced plans to redevelop the four-acre SV Road plot into a high-end residential project. The project will reportedly feature 3, 4, and 5 BHK residences and exclusive penthouses across two 50-storey towers. With a projected gross development value of Rs 3,000 crore, the project is slated for a tentative launch in 2026. Known for its sound stages, outdoor sets, and central location, Filmistan was once a go-to destination for Bollywood films, television shows, and ad shoots. However, with newer, tech-equipped studios sprouting across the city, Filmistan gradually fell out of favour.

‘Sitaare Zameen Par' Box Office Collection Day 16: Aamir Khan's film sees growth, crosses ₹142 Crore

Aamir Khan's family drama 'Sitaare Zameen Par' recorded a strong jump on its 16th day at the box office, earning ₹ 5 crore on the third Saturday. With this, the film's total domestic collection has reached ₹ 142.80 crore. After a dip in earnings on Day 15 (Friday), which brought in ₹ 2.4 crore, the Saturday collections have offered a fresh boost to the film's performance. The jump reflects renewed audience interest as the weekend progresses. In its second week, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' collected ₹ 46.5 crore, with ₹ 46.24 crore from the Hindi version, ₹ 0.17 crore from Tamil, and ₹ 0.09 crore from Telugu. On Day 16, the Hindi (2D) version saw a rise in cinema occupancy: The increase in evening show attendance suggests that the film continues to attract families and younger audiences. Analysts note that strong word-of-mouth, Aamir Khan's presence, and the film's emotional storyline have helped sustain interest beyond the initial release period. With Sunday still to come, trade experts expect the film to post even stronger numbers by the end of the weekend. If momentum continues, 'Sitaare Zameen Par' may cross the ₹ 150 crore mark soon. This performance reinforces Aamir Khan's pull at the box office and reflects the audience's ongoing appetite for heartfelt, message-driven cinema.

High court reserves order on Kangana Ranaut's tweet drama

Bathinda: After almost three years of legal back-and-forth, the Punjab and Haryana high court has reserved its verdict on a petition filed by Hindi cinema actor-turned-MP Kangana Ranaut, who is challenging a defamation case stemming from her controversial tweet during the year 2020-21 farmer protests. A high court bench reserved the order on July 3 after concluding arguments in the matter. Ranaut, now an MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, had filed the petition to quash summons issued by a Bathinda court in 2022 under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The defamation complaint was filed by Mahinder Kau (73) r of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda district, alleging that Ranaut had defamed her in a tweet by identifying her wrongly as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh fame and implying that such women could be hired to protest for Rs 100. The tweet, which was later deleted, targeted Mahinder Kaur during her participation in the farmers' agitation at Delhi's borders. On Feb 22, 2022, Bathinda judicial magistrate Tanvi Gupta issued initial summons for Ranaut to appear on April 19, 2022. When she did not respond, fresh summons were issued for July 14, 2022, to be delivered via Bathinda SSP. Before the hearing, Ranaut moved the high court, arguing that the trial court had misapplied Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Her legal team also claimed she had merely retweeted content posted originally by one "Adhivakta Gautam Yadav", who was not named as an accused in the complaint — raising questions about the complainant's intent. Mahinder Kaur's counsel, Raghbir Singh Behniwal, said the trial court had set July 11 as the next hearing date pending the high court's ruling.
