Former LSU baseball ace making waves in the Athletics' minor leagues

USA Today16 hours ago
A former LSU baseball star is putting on a show in the minor leagues. The Athletics selected LSU pitcher Gage Jump in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, and after a stellar start to 2025, Jump is the A's No. 1-ranked prospect.
Jump began his collegiate career at UCLA in 2022, but an injury forced the lefty to miss the entire 2023 season. Jump transferred to LSU and spent one year in Baton Rouge, serving as the Tigers' ace. In his lone year with LSU, Jump tossed 83 innings with a 3.47 ERA. He struck out 101 and walked 22.
LSU was sent home in the regional round in 2024 as LSU's lineup struggled to replace the lost production from 2023, but with Jump on the mound, the pitching wasn't an issue.
Jump didn't pitch in the minors at all in 2024, but through 78.1 innings in 2025, Jump owns a 2.07 ERA with 94 strikeouts. Opposing batters are hitting just .186 vs Jump.
Here's what MLB.com says in its latest scouting report of Jump:
"Jump's fastball is difficult for opposing hitters to pick up with an arm angle that creates some deception. The heater sits about 92-94 mph and can reach up to 97 with good carry up in the zone. His upper-70s curveball has significant downer break, and his low-80s slider has cutting action...The ceiling of a mid-rotation starter is there, though some scouts believe he might be better suited in a bullpen role. To start out, the A's will develop him as a starter and look to see him maintain good health and strike-throwing ability."
If Jump keeps pitching like this, he will remain in a starting role and be at the MLB level sooner rather than later. Jump isn't the only former Tiger in the A's organization. He's joined by Tommy White, who remains with the A's High-A team.

Punishment Is Coming For WNBA Star Angel Reese

Punishment Is Coming For WNBA Star Angel Reese originally appeared on The Spun. Punishment is coming for Chicago Sky star Angel Reese on Sunday evening. Reese, 23, was named an All-Star for the second straight year. Reese, a first round pick out of LSU, is averaging 12 points and 12 rebounds per game. She is one of 12 reserves selected to the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game. Advertisement But a fine is probably coming. Reese, who scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 80-75 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, was not happy with the league's officiating. Reese took to social media to immediately blast the WNBA for their officiating crew. She's not happy. Angel Reese speaks Reese, who starred collegiately at LSU and Maryland, blasted the WNBA for missing some calls in the Chicago Sky's loss to the Minnesota Lynx. "diabolical," she wrote, sharing a photo of a missed foul call. She added: "DO BETTER." Reese knows that a fine is coming. Leagues don't take kindly to players or coaches openly criticizing the officiating. Advertisement But Reese appears to think that it's worth it. The Chicago Sky star made it clear that she was going to call out the WNBA's officials until things get better. Reese, though, is hardly the first notable WNBA figure to call out the league. Indiana Fever head coach Stephnaie White blasted the league's officials earlier this year. White was bothered by how the officials handled a Fever vs. Sun game. "When the officials don't get control of the ballgame, and they allow that stuff to happen ... this is what happens," White told the media. "You've got competitive women, who are the best in the world at what they do, right? And when you allow them to play physical, and you allow these things to happen, they're going to compete. And they're going to have their teammates' backs. It's exactly what you'd expect ― right? ― out of fierce competition ... I started talking to the officials in the first quarter, and we knew this was gonna happen." Advertisement We'll have to wait and see what the league does in response to Reese's criticism. A fine is coming. Punishment Is Coming For WNBA Star Angel Reese first appeared on The Spun on Jul 7, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 7, 2025, where it first appeared.
