China plans to open a solar-powered shoe factory in Cuba
It is a joint venture created on July 7 called DuoNex S.A. between a Cuban entity and Chinese company Hangzhou Iunke Industrial Development Co., Ltd., according to the official Cuban press.
A previous report stated that the new company was established with the goal of 'developing, producing and marketing footwear, leather goods, saddlery, plastics and textiles.'
According to the official newspaper Granma, María Eugenia Fabra Tamayo, Business Director at Industrias Nexus S.A., says the goal of the company is to produce up to three pairs of shoes per capita.
The first production lines will include flip-flops, protective boots, athletic and executive footwear. Fabra said that the products will be targeted at sectors such as communications, tourism, agriculture, the sugar industry, non-state management, and the general population, through chain stores and e-commerce platforms.
Fabra also said that the products would not be limited to the domestic market, but that the plan is to export them to Latin America and the Caribbean, although the destination countries were not specified.
The company also plans to produce plastic products, such as containers for industrial paint. The factory will be located in the municipality of Regla in Havana, with an initial workforce of 63 and the creation of more than 40 additional jobs.
While Cuba will provide the labor and infrastructure, China will be responsible for providing designs, molds, financing for technological improvements and purchasing spare parts.
China will also supply some of the raw materials, while the Cuban partner will negotiate agreements with other national companies to obtain leather and packaging materials.
To ensure operational capacity during frequent power outages, the company will rely on photovoltaic solar panels imported from China, with the goal of becoming energy self-sufficient.
China has become one of Cuba's main allies amid the deep crisis plaguing the island, strengthening ties in key sectors such as tourism.
The Cuban government has eliminated visa requirements for Chinese travelers, while this year China began offering Cubans free visas to visit the Asian country if they meet the requirements.

China investigates Shaolin Temple's head monk on suspicion of financial and sexual misconduct
HONG KONG — The head of China 's famous Shaolin Temple has been defrocked as he is investigated by authorities for alleged financial offenses and sexual misconduct. Shi Yongxin, the temple's abbot since 1999, has had his ordination certificate revoked, China's state-backed Buddhist Association said in a statement Monday, citing allegations that he embezzled and misappropriated project funds and temple assets. The 59-year-old religious leader also broke his vow of celibacy, having 'improper relationships' with women over a long period of time and fathering at least one child out of wedlock, the temple said in a separate statement Sunday. Shi's actions are 'particularly egregious, severely damaging the reputation of the Buddhist community and tarnishing the image of monastics,' the association said, adding that it 'firmly supports' the investigation by multiple agencies. Calls to the Shaolin Temple went unanswered on Monday. Dubbed the 'CEO monk,' Shi globally commercialized the Shaolin Temple based in China's central province of Henan, a 1,500-year-old monastery recognized as the cradle of kung fu. As of Monday, four companies are still registered under Shi's name, according to Qichacha, a Chinese corporate database operator. Led by Shi, the temple has raised its international profile over the years through tourism, performances and training. It has also established multiple overseas cultural centers, including in the United States, Australia and Europe. Though Shi has faced similar accusations in the past, they were rejected by religious authorities at the time. In 2011, Shi downplayed online rumors that he had mistresses and children. 'There's no need to vindicate. When things like this happen, just let it go,' he told state-run newspaper People's Daily. In 2015, several of Shi's students accused him of extortion and bribery, drawing heightened attention from China's top religious affairs body. A two-year investigation later cleared Shi of wrongdoing. The latest investigation was widely satirized on Chinese social media, where commenters noted the irony of the allegations against Shi given that his religion requires him to live frugally. 'All the wishes I made for wealth and success at the Buddhist temples have come true for the monks,' one user wrote on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Huawei reclaims No. 1 smartphone spot in China — and Apple returns to growth
Huawei reclaimed the top spot in China's smartphone market in the second quarter of the year, while Apple returned to growth in the country — one of its most critical markets — data released by technology market analyst firm Canalys showed on Monday. Huawei shipped 12.2 million smartphones in China in the three months ended June, a rise of 15% year on year — equating to 18% market share. It's the first time Huawei has been the biggest player by market share in China since the first quarter of 2024, according to Canalys. Apple, meanwhile, shipped 10.1 million smartphones in the quarter in China, up 4% year on year and ranking fifth. It is the first time Apple has recorded growth in China since the fourth quarter of 2023, Canalys said. Shipments represent the number of devices sent to retailers. They do no equate directly to sales but are a gauge of demand. The numbers come ahead of Apple's quarterly earnings release this week, with investors watching the company's performance in China, a market where the Cupertino giant has faced significant challenges, including intense competition from Huawei and other local players such as Xiaomi. Huawei, which made a comeback at the end of 2023 after its smartphone business was crippled by U.S. sanctions, has eaten away at Apple's share. Apple's return to growth in China will be a welcome sign for investors. The U.S. tech giant "strategically adjusted its pricing" for the iPhone 16 series in China, which helped it grow, Canalys said. Chinese e-commerce firms discounted Apple's iPhone 16 models during the quarter. And Apple itself also increased trade-in prices for some iPhone models. Canalys' numbers back up figures released by Counterpoint Research earlier this month showing Apple's return to growth in China. Shares of Apple have fallen around 14.5% this year, partly on concerns over China and geopolitical headwinds. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened Apple with tariffs and urged CEO Tim Cook to manufacture iPhones in America, a move experts have said would be near impossible. Meanwhile, competition in China has intensified. Huawei has aggressively launched various smartphones in the past year and has started to roll out HarmonyOS 5, its self-developed operating system, across various devices. It is a rival to Google's Android and Apple's iOS. "This move is expected to accelerate the expansion of its independent ecosystem's user base, while also placing greater demands on system compatibility and user experience," Lucas Zhong, analyst at Canalys, said in a press release.
