Microsoft, OpenAI Seek Decade-Long Alliance to Secure Future of AI Access Amid AGI Uncertainty
According to Bloomberg, the renewed discussions are centered on updating the terms of the current agreement, which could see Microsoft retain continued access to OpenAI's most powerful technologies—even if OpenAI eventually claims to have achieved AGI. This clause is crucial for Microsoft, given that its flagship AI-driven products, including Copilot for Word, Excel, and GitHub, are deeply integrated with OpenAI's GPT models.
Under the present deal, Microsoft's rights to OpenAI's most advanced systems would diminish once AGI is officially declared. That's a major risk for the tech giant, whose generative AI efforts rely heavily on the consistent availability of those models. With OpenAI now nearing what it sees as AGI milestones, Microsoft is eager to renegotiate before reaching that tipping point.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is looking to become a public-benefit corporation—a status that prioritizes public good alongside profit. However, to make that structural transition, the AI lab reportedly needs Microsoft's approval. In exchange for supporting the shift, Microsoft is said to be negotiating for greater equity in the restructured entity and an extension of its current AI access rights, which would otherwise expire in 2030 or earlier if AGI is declared.
The heart of the debate lies in defining AGI itself—a feat that remains elusive and conceptually vague. What qualifies as AGI? A chatbot composing original symphonies? Explaining complex movie plots like Inception? Without a universally accepted benchmark, the AGI clause becomes a gray area, prompting months of back-and-forth between the two partners.
Adding complexity to the negotiations, OpenAI has reportedly suggested to investors that Microsoft's share of its revenue will shrink over time. That prospect may not sit well with Microsoft, which has invested billions into OpenAI's success and relies on its models to power the Azure OpenAI Service.
The partnership has faced strains before. In June, The Information revealed previous clashes over the AGI clause. More recently, OpenAI's move to diversify its cloud support—tapping into providers like Google, Oracle, and CoreWeave—has sparked further scrutiny about the long-term alignment between the two tech titans.
Complicating matters even more is Elon Musk's ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI. Musk, a cofounder of the organization, has accused it of straying from its founding nonprofit ideals and becoming too aligned with Microsoft's commercial interests.
For Microsoft, the timing of these negotiations is critical. With its quarterly earnings just around the corner, stakeholders will likely demand clarity on the future of its AI alliance with OpenAI—an alliance that could define the next chapter of the AI revolution.

No H-1B visa, study and get out: Trump aide's message to foreign students
Steve Bannon, former White House strategist and close aide to US President Donald Trump, has called for a complete purge of international students from American universities. Bannon's comments reignite the debate over the future of the H-1B visa programme and the place of foreign talent in the United States. 'I don't think you should have any foreign students in the country right now,' said Bannon, claiming that international students are edging out American students from educational and job opportunities. He added, 'Instead of stapling a green card to their diploma, the administration should staple an exit visa. Boom, you are out of here. You get 30 days to hang out with classmates, you can come back for alumni stuff, but you are gone.' Why does Bannon believe foreign students are harming America? Bannon argued that allowing foreign students to stay in the US after graduation drains other countries of talent, likening it to British imperial policies. 'The countries of the world won't get better if you're sucking up every piece of talent. That's how the British ran their empire. It's imperial,' he said. He also warned that blocking legal pathways like student visas will only worsen illegal immigration. 'If everyone wants to come to Harvard and they can't, they will come through Central America, and we'll stay in the same mess we are trying to clear now,' said Bannon. Are H-1B visas responsible for American job losses? The H-1B visa programme has come under renewed scrutiny as US tech giants announce waves of layoffs. According to around 80,000 tech jobs have been cut this year. While companies insist that foreign workers are also being laid off and that H-1B visas are not to blame, American tech workers remain sceptical. In 2024, nearly 400,000 H-1B visas were approved — more than double the number issued in 2000. However, a large portion of these approvals were for renewals rather than new applications. Most H-1B holders work at major firms like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, who invest heavily to retain foreign-born employees, Newsweek reported. What did Vice President JD Vance say about hiring foreign workers? US Vice President JD Vance has criticised tech companies for firing American workers while continuing to hire from abroad. In July, Vance publicly targeted Microsoft, saying he doesn't believe the 'bulls**t story' that companies can't find qualified Americans. 'We want the very best and the brightest to make America their home. But I don't want companies to fire 9,000 American workers and then to go and say, 'We can't find workers here in America.' That's a bulls**t story,' said Vance during a bipartisan forum. The US labour market has also shown signs of weakness. The July jobs report revealed only 73,000 new jobs added that month, with downward revisions slashing 258,000 jobs from May and June figures. How are these remarks affecting international students? Bannon's comments come as foreign students, especially from India, face mounting challenges in securing US visas for the upcoming academic session. 'The 27 per cent drop in the number of F-1 student visas, particularly for Indian students, may seem linked to Trump's return, but the reasons go deeper,' Mamta Shekhawat, founder of a study abroad platform, told Business Standard. Shekhawat explained that visa denials were already on the rise even before Trump's re-election. 'However, the decline significantly accelerated after the introduction of new immigration norms by his administration. In May 2025, the US government paused pending visa interviews and tightened vetting, causing delays and a large number of cancellations,' she said. Are Indian students now choosing other countries to study abroad? Shekhawat noted that Indian students are now actively exploring alternatives to the US. 'We have witnessed firsthand a clear shift in students' outlook towards studying in the US. The majority are increasingly turning to destinations like New Zealand, Ireland, Germany, Australia and France,' she said. According to her, this change is not only because of visa rejections. 'Indian students are aligning strategically towards a broader portfolio of study abroad opportunities, moving beyond traditional destinations like the US and UK,' said Shekhawat.

TikTok launches crowd-sourced context tool; Reddit's AI-driven share price jump; CapitalG and Nvidia in reported talks to fund Vast Data
TikTok launches crowd-sourced context tool TikTok announced the launch of a crowd-sourced tool called Footnotes that is aimed at letting users add context to potentially inaccurate or misleading posts, following a similar model to the Community Notes feature on X (formerly Twitter). TikTok began testing Footnotes in April, and allows vetted users to contribute context that is then rated by others for being helpful. Meta also follows a similar standard, having done away with its fact-checking programme in what was seen as a strategic move to align the company with U.S. President Donald Trump's conservative values. TikTok has around 170 million users in the U.S. and nearly 80,000 users in the country who have maintained an account for at least half a year have qualified as Footnotes contributors. However, the Chinese-owned short video app said that it will continue to maintain existing fact-checking programmes such as labelling content that is hard to verify, and partnering with fact-checking bodies. The existence of a Community Notes model of content moderation alone is not enough to prevent disinformation on sites such as X and Meta, according to professional fact-checkers working across time zones and languages. Reddit's AI-driven share price jump Reddit last week saw its shares rising by 15% after reporting quarterly results that went far beyond Wall Street expectations, bringing more attention to its Generative AI-powered offerings. Reddit is the latest tech company to capitalise on the market's interest in AI products, as it focuses on AI-based advertising tools. Apart from this, Reddit boasts a huge and well-organised trove of knowledge that users have contributed to the platform in the form of subject-based forums, media, questions and answers, interviews, and more. Per data from LSEG, Reddit expects its third-quarter revenue to be between $535 million and $545 million, while analysts have estimated an average of $473 million. Marketers are interested in Reddit, as it offers them the opportunity to make use of various ad campaigns and even insert brand ads right into user conversations. CapitalG and Nvidia in reported talks to fund Vast Data CapitalG, the growth fund under Alphabet, and Nvidia are reportedly carrying out talks in order to invest in AI infrastructure provider Vast Data. The new funding round could value the company at as much as $30 billion, per the sources. The funding round could close in the coming weeks, according to them. Vast Data has its headquarters in New York and develops storage technology that caters to the upkeep of large AI data centres. Vast Data may also consider an initial public offering in the future. Some of its clients include Elon Musk's xAI and CoreWeave. However, news of a potential investment has not yet been officially confirmed by Vast Data and CapitalG. An explosion in Generative AI startups, products, and models has also triggered demand for facilities that will allow tech companies to scale their data centres without facing hurdles.
