Guardian's Carlos Santana delivers vintage blast to clinch Ohio Cup after 15 years of debut
Carlos Santana blew a memorable night for Guardians fans after 15 years since his Major League debut. The veteran first baseman slammed a third-inning grand slam to help propel Cleveland to an 11-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the final game—and bragging rights—of the 2025 edition of the Ohio Cup.
Cleveland, now 35–32, was able to leapfrog other teams while Cincinnati dropped to 35–34.
Carlos Santana's grand slam fuels explosive third inning
The offense broke out after the Guardians were down 1–0, headed to the bottom of the third. Carlos Santana then stepped to the plate with a set of bases loaded and obliterated a grand slam, changing the course of the game in an instant as they put Cleveland ahead 4–1. On this 15th anniversary of his debut, his blast to right-center sent Progressive Field into a frenzy — a reminder of both his legacy and the value of his second act.
Cleveland got another two in the fourth and four more in the sixth to complete the rout. The night earned Santana four RBIs, and all of them were delivered from that singular iconic swing. It was his first grand slam since returning to Cleveland this year and one of the oldest in franchise history to hit one.
Cleveland Guardians
dominate as pitching and hitting align
The Cleveland offense battered Cincinnati for 13 hits and 11 runs, while their pitching limited the Reds to 5 hits and 2 runs.
Cincinnati managed runs in the third and fifth innings, with no serious rally, however. The Guardians were equally as sharp defensively, not committing an error.
This win not only broke a five-game losing streak against the Reds, but also prevented them from sweeping the Ohio Cup series. They were the kind of Guardians we saw basking in the glow of the postseason last year, relentless up and down the lineup, and a confident bullpen slamming the door shut by the end of the night.

Browns put cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. on injured reserve after he ruptures his Achilles tendon
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. was placed on injured reserve Wednesday after an MRI confirmed that he ruptured an Achilles tendon. HT Image Coach Kevin Stefanski said before practice that Emerson would have surgery and be out for the season. 'It's disappointing. Injuries are the worst part of our game, but he will bounce back, I know what he is made of,' Stefanski said. 'Yesterday was a lot. He is sore today.' Emerson, a third-round draft pick in 2022, got hurt while covering wide receiver Diontae Johnson on a deep route during a 7-on-7 drill Tuesday. He dropped to the ground in pain and screamed before being carted off the field with a towel covering his head. He has 202 tackles, four interceptions, a fumble recovery and sack in three seasons. His loss is another blow to a Cleveland defense looking to rebound from a poor season and already short-handed with linebackers Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (neck injury) and Jordan Hicks (retired) ruled out. With Emerson out, Greg Newsome likely will move into the No. 2 corner spot opposite Pro Bowler Denzel Ward. Both Emerson and Newsome also played some nickel back, covering slot receivers. Cameron Mitchell would be the top candidate for full-time nickel duties. 'You just need to work through it. I think that's the thing that we've seen certainly this season,' Stefanski said. "Every season you'll have injuries at positions and guys have to earn roles. And I think that's what training camp is about, really figuring that out.' ___ AP NFL:

Pirates sending 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes to Reds for reliever Rogers, prospect Stafura, AP source says
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates are trading Gold Glove-winning third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to Cincinnati for veteran reliever Taylor Rogers and shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday. HT Image The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the trade was not official. The swap gives the Reds an elite defender at the hot corner with a manageable contract. The 28-year-old Hayes, a Gold Glove winner in 2023, has five-plus years left on the extension he signed with Pittsburgh in 2022 and will make $7 million in 2026 and 2027, $8 million in 2028 and 2029 before rising to $12 million in 2030. Hayes, the son of former major leaguer Charlie Hayes and a first-round draft pick by the Pirates in 2015, has struggled to find consistency at the plate since his splashy debut during the final month of the COVID-19-shortened season in 2020. He hit .376 with five homers in 24 games immediately after being called up, numbers that he didn't come close to matching while playing a full 162-game schedule. Hayes is hitting .236 with two home runs and 36 RBIs this season for the Pirates, who sit in last place in the NL Central thanks largely to an offense that ranks near the bottom or at the bottom in the majors in most significant statistical categories. The Pirates have several internal option to replace Hayes in the short-term, including Jared Triolo, who won a Gold Glove as a utility infielder in 2024. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Pittsburgh's everyday shortstop this season, moved over to third for the Pirates' series-finale against San Francisco on Thursday. Rogers remains an effective left-handed option out of the bullpen at 34. The 10-year veteran, an All-Star with Minnesota in 2021, is 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 40 appearances with the Reds this season. Stafura, 20, was a second-round pick by Cincinnati in 2023. He is hitting .262 with four home runs and 48 RBIs in 88 games with Class A Daytona this season. ___ AP MLB:
