Chelsea could suffer at season start with mini-preseason

It comes at a cost though. Every team in the Premier League other than Man City has been sitting with their feet up for a month while we've been playing draining, competitive football against the best teams in the world.
Now our players go on their break, while the rest of league ramps up into preseason.
It's going to create a very strange start to the 2025-2026 season for Chelsea, and most people would suspect that it's going to mean a slow start in terms of results. According to Simon Johnson, the majority of our players will only return from holiday two weeks before we start the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday 17th of August.
Loanees the first to return
Johnson quite reasonably expects that Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian will start a little earlier, as they didn't make it as deep in the CWC as we did. Then there are others who weren't taken on the tour and have already returned to Cobham to start their preseason – but as Johnson points out: 'they are returning loanees who are expected to be sold.'
'Chelsea have just two friendlies, against Bayer Leverkusen and Milan, before their opening Premier League game versus Crystal Palace.'
So for all the fun we had in the USA, we may pay the price in the early weeks of the season as we look to get up to speed and face teams who are a month ahead in terms of preparation. Don't be surprised by a few bad results, and a rather mixed up team in those early weeks as everyone plays catch up.

Hughes admits Ellis impressed in surprise midfield role
Mark Hughes admits Jack Ellis impressed him in his surprise midfield role for Carlisle United. The Cumbrian defender was given a role in the centre by Hughes for the 2-0 win at Harrogate Town. And 21-year-old Ellis's positive display has given Hughes further food for thought. The head coach says he always felt Ellis's attributes could be worth testing in midfield. He got his chance alongside Callum Whelan on a day summer signing Josh Grant was out injured, while Ethan Robson started on the bench. 'You've heard me mention before that I think we probably lack a bit of physicality in there [midfield], and I thought Jack could come in,' said Hughes. 'I think he's been excellent in pre-season. I believe he's been one of our better players in the pre-season games he's taken part in, so I knew that he could go in there and do a job in terms of just breaking things up and getting us on the front foot. 'He certainly did that in the first half when we were on the front foot and jumping on those second balls. Hughes felt Ellis read danger well and gave United extra physicality in midfield at Harrogate (Image: Ben Holmes) 'From that point of view, for me, it was good to know that what I thought could happen actually did.' Ellis, prior to Saturday, had mainly featured in the centre of defence during Carlisle's friendlies so far. Hughes confirms Dutch-born midfielder who's on trial with Carlisle United Hughes went on to speak approvingly about the character of the home-grown player, who earned a new deal this summer after impressing at right-back in the closing weeks of 2024/25. 'He's very receptive. Jack is a good player,' Hughes told the News & Star. 'He wants to get better. At times, he'll sacrifice himself for the team. That's what you want. 'We've talked about it [using him in midfield]. We've looked at him in different areas. He's been centre-back, he's been a full-back, and now midfield [at Harrogate] was an opportunity to look at him because I just felt in the last few games, at times, we lost a little bit of control just because we didn't have that physicality. Knicks reserve guard could see increased role next season
New York Knicks guard Miles McBride could be the biggest beneficiary of Mike Brown being hired as the team's new head coach. Per SNY's Ian Begley, McBride could see an increased role compared to his role under Tom Thibodeau. 'We don't know how Knicks coach Mike Brown will deploy his rotation. But it's logical to think that McBride will play significant minutes with Clarkson and Yabusele,' Begley said. In the past, it would appear at times as though McBride wasn't being utilized properly in the rotation. Now with Brown, it's possible that McBride could see an increased role in the offense. McBride has the ability to play in several different types of lineups for the Knicks thanks to his ability to space the floor and defend at a high level. McBride himself spoke with Begley about sharing the second unit with new acquisitions Jordan Clarkson, and Guerschon Yabusele. 'Obviously (Clarkson's) a vet in this league. He's done great things,' McBride said, per Begley. 'Obviously, he can fill up the stat sheet and really score the ball at a high level. And obviously adding Geurschon as well. I think everybody's seen what he did in the Olympics and carrying that momentum into (last season), so we're really excited about him.' 'I feel like we're going to play fast, we're going to be using a lot of different guys,' he added. 'If you saw the Finals, they (Oklahoma City and Indiana) had a lot of depth on both teams, and I feel like we're all NBA guys. So if you're on the team, I feel like you're able to help out.' McBride averaged a career-best 9.5 points per game last season off the bench, and shot 37 percent from three-point range. Next year could be a breakout season for him should he get an increased role.
