The gloves are off. In an explosive press briefing on Sunday, KwaZulu-Natal's top cop, Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi proclaimed he was combat ready and willing to die for the police badge, making serious allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya.
Mkhwanazi also appeared to be defending his boss, Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and the senior officers recently arrested in terms of a recent Crime Intelligence racket bust. He proclaimed his boss was the Police Commissioner, no one else, and that the police minister had no rights nor powers to close down policing units.
Mkhwanazi made damning and alarming revelations, accusing Mchunu of interference in policing operations and of shutting down the political killings task team unit just as it was uncovering links between a powerful drug cartel and high-ranking politicians, police officers, and prosecutors.
He also said Mchunu had organized a private meeting between himself, Sibiya and Mkhwanazi, where he attempted to clear the bad blood between. Mkhwanazi remarked that 'there can never be peace between a criminal and policeman', he said, labelling the national crimes detection boss, Sibiya, as a criminal.
'We are on combat mode, I am taking on the criminals directly… I am a police officer, who understood the task at hand when I joined the service.
'I chose the combating side of policing. I understand that at this present moment the war we are facing deals with high level senior officers,' said Mkhwanazi.
Mkhwanazi, dressed in his Special Task Force combat uniform and surrounded by other armed officers from the STF and TRT units, said that 121 case dockets were unexpectedly removed from the task team in March and subsequently shelved at the police head office in Pretoria.
According to Mkhwanazi, this action was reportedly taken under the directive of Sibiya, who is alleged to have acted on the orders of Mchunu.
'This was done without the authority of the National Commissioner, nor I as a Provincial Commissioner was ever informed,' Mkhwanazi said.
'Five of these dockets had instructions to arrest perpetrators, but nothing has been done they are sitting in an archive in his office in Pretoria. God knows why.'
The commissioner alleged that the disbanded unit uncovered links between a national criminal syndicate, politicians, police officials, and senior prosecutors, possibly leading to pressure to halt their work.
'I can confirm to South Africans today that the investigation these members were involved with in Gauteng has unmasked a syndicate. It involves politicians who are currently serving in Parliament,' he said.
Mkhwanazi also accused Mchunu of misleading Parliament regarding his relationship with Brown Mokgotsi, an associate who had access to classified police documents and communicated about internal SAPS decisions, including the disbandment of the unit.
'The Minister denied knowing Mr. Brown Mokgotsi in Parliament. But later confirmed on a public platform that he is his comrade from North West,' Mkhwanazi said.
Since its establishment in 2018, the Political Killings Task Team was an integrated multidisciplinary unit involving the South African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority, State Security, and Correctional Services. It focused on politically motivated killings and related crimes in KwaZulu-Natal.
On the matter of the senior officers arrested recently for covert intelligence operations, Mkhwanazi alleged they were being framed, as if they spoke, they would uncover national security issues, which could in turn lead to them being charged further.

Steenhuisen gravely concerned about impact of US 30% tariff import on country's exports

Lindsay Dentlinger 8 July 2025 | 10:00 Department of Agriculture Tariffs Donald Trump Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen delivering his budget vote address in the Good Hope Chamber of Parliament on 8 July 2025. Picture: Parliament/Phando Jikelo CAPE TOWN - Agriculture Minister, John Steenhuisen, says he's gravely concerned about the impact that the United States' (US's) 30% tariff import increase will have on the country's exports. He said the announcement by US President Donald Trump on Monday almost certainly spells the end of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) under which the country has, until now, enjoyed duty-free exports to the US for over 6,000 products. READ: Trump set to impose 30% tariff on all SA goods Delivering his budget speech in Parliament on Tuesday, Steenhuisen, however, said there's still time for the government to negotiate a more favourable deal before the first of August implementation date. Steenhuisen said the agriculture sector is particularly exposed in the areas of citrus, wine, nuts and table grapes. 'Now more than ever, it highlights the need for urgent reform in South Africa so that we can ensure that our economy can meet the requirement of our trading partners around the world, and I look forward to working with Minister [Parks] Tau and others in the coming weeks to urgently seek a way through this impasse, and to ensure we can avoid the 30% tariff for our agriculture sector.'

Did the Viljoens of Tammy Taylor-fame skip the country?

It seems that Peet and Melany Viljoen are now living in the US, with him urging white South Africans to join him there. Did Peet and Melany Viljoen of Tammy Taylor franchise fame really skip the country? It seems like they did if you look at Peet Viljoen's latest video on Instagram, where he makes various racist statements and urges white people to follow him to the US. Peet Viljoen and his wife, Melany, have been in the news for the past few years after various people accused them of selling Tammy Taylor franchises that never materialised. Some of these complainants won their court cases against the Viljoens. In the latest court case that The Citizen reported on, North Gauteng High Court judge, Joseph Raulinga ordered that the Viljoens must pay back the R600 000 a woman paid for a Tammy Taylor franchise. He also declared the transaction unconscionable, unjust and unreasonable in terms of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), and void. He also ordered that Tammy Taylor Global Franchising, as well as both the Viljoens, 'immediately cease representing or holding out to the public that they have the legal authority and right to sell Tammy Taylor nail franchises in South Africa, without authorisation under the Trade Marks Act.' In addition, he ordered that they remove all references to Tammy Taylor from their websites, stationery, forms, marketing material, salon products, and social media platforms within 30 days from 25 April. Raulinga also ordered the registrar of the court to forward a copy of the order and all the papers to the National Prosecuting Authority. The Hawks confirmed to The Citizen that it is investigating. ALSO READ: Tammy Taylor Global Franchising gets a big hiding in South African high court Viljoens earlier denied they are leaving SA Private investigator Mike Bolhuis said in May, just after news of the latest judgment against the Viljoens became public, that he received information indicating that the Viljoens planned to evade justice by moving to the United States of America. In response, Peet Viljoen told Rapport that they are not leaving the country and that they are simply going on holiday to Perth in Australia where they will open a franchise. He said that they had no intention to leave South Africa permanently and even provided 'evidence' in the form of copies of plane tickets to Perth. However, this past Sunday, Viljoen told Rapport that he has in fact left South Africa for the US and that he has no intention of returning to South Africa. Rapport referred to – now deleted – statements Peet made on his Instagram account. According to Rapport, his original video included the statement: 'I don't speak baboon anymore,' and the assertion that he left South Africa for the US due to South Africa's racial laws and the 'inferior mental capacity of the black person in South Africa'. ALSO READ: WATCH: Real Tammy Taylor says Peet and Melany Viljoen stole her identity Viljoen says they moved to US for safety reasons In addition, he claimed he moved to America because he fears for his safety in South Africa, citing the EFF and its leader Julius Malema in several claims. It seems that these claims have been edited out later as it is not on his account anymore, while the post shows that it has been edited. However, there are videos on his Instagram and TikTok accounts where he talks at length about leaving South Africa to live in the US and offering to help South Africans who want to move there, as he believes there is no future for the white man in the country. This is his video on Instagram: This is his video on TikTok: But Bolhuis says the Viljoens are planning to use the current political climate between South Africa and the US as an excuse to evade justice for crimes they committed in South Africa. 'It is clear from Viljoen's statements that he is attempting to provoke a public response from the EFF and other anti-racism activist groups, with the hope of using it to appeal to the US government that his life could be in danger if he returns to South Africa. 'This is a sly and corrupt way of obtaining and using refugee status to evade justice in South Africa.' According to Bolhuis, the Viljoens sold their assets in South Africa and lied about their intentions to leave the country by claiming they were merely taking a holiday in Australia. ALSO READ: Real Tammy Taylor owns her trademark, not the Viljoens – expert Viljoen says he is an attorney despite being disbarred Viljoen also says in his TikTok video that he is a South African attorney who moved to America for his own safety, although he was debarred in South Africa. On his X profile he describes himself as a 'law broker' who 'uses his legal expertise to help people find the right lawyer'. In a post on another platform, he claims to be the first law broker in South Africa. According to Bolhuis, a warrant of arrest will soon be issued for them, which he says is the main reason for their departure from South Africa. 'If the Viljoens succeed in evading justice by finding refuge in America, this will set a standard and it will open the door for widespread corruption and many similar cases will soon follow. 'They must return to South Africa and face justice for their actions.' Bolhuis is warning the South African and American public not to fall victim to Viljoen's manipulation. 'He is well-spoken and he knows how to appear sincere. There is a good reason why Viljoen has been the centre of several controversies surrounding his business dealings over the years. 'He uses manipulation and sophistication to draw victims into conducting business with him. Once the victims discover that he is not adhering to his end of the agreement, he turns to intimidation, extortion and threats to convince his victims not to file or to withdraw criminal charges against him.'

Minister Nyhontso presents R9. 8 billion budget for land reform and rural development

Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso says the department's 2025/26 budget was a commitment to redress equitable access to land for all and to improve the lives of people, especially those residing in rural areas. Image: File Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso on Tuesday said the implementation of a meaningful land reform program required a coordinated approach to enhance integrated and sustainable interventions. Nyhontso said the department's 2025/26 budget was a commitment to redress equitable access to land for all and to improve the lives of people, especially those residing in rural areas. 'Land is a foundation of identity, dignity, and economic prosperity. Land is a key component of the factors of production. "Therefore, without land, any aspiration of social economic development remains just that- aspirations,' he said. Video Player is loading. 'It is therefore with this in mind that we welcome the current trend of convergence in the national discourse on the land question among those of us who suffer dispositions and oppression.' Nyhontso sang praises to the Inter-Ministerial Committee of Land Reform led by Deputy President Paul Mashatile in coordinating various efforts to avoid overlapping and duplication of functions related to land reform. 'This will enable us to accelerate efforts to address the land question of historical dispossessed communities and to support the poor." He said among the top priorities he has been driving since he assumed office was the development of equitable access to land. 'We will encourage South Africans to participate in the development of these historic pieces of legislation as they will redefine the legislative framework for access to land and on equitable basis. 'I have no doubt that this will be a subject of discussion during the National Dialogue. We are on record in a number of forums as having emphasised that the delivery of land and the provision of support to the beneficiaries of all land reform programs are two sides of the same coin.' He said a particular focus since taking office was to address the phenomenon of poor performance of land reform projects and inadequate pre-and post-settlement support for beneficiaries. 'Indeed, this is a concern that has also been raised by a range of stakeholders.' Nyhontso said the overall budget of the department was R9.820 billion with land tenure reform and restitution receiving the largest share amounting to R6.168 billion of the total allocation. 'This demonstrates that our budget is grounded on our core mandate.' He also said the land redistribution and tenure reform branch has been allocated R1.073 billion. 'With this budget, a total allocation of R559 million has been set aside to acquire and allocate 44, 000 hectares of land.' Nyhontso said his department continued to process applications for hectares of land to labour tenants. 'It should be acknowledged though that the area of tenure security for labour tenants, including the continuing spread of illegal evictions, remains an unacceptable situation.' He added the department was implementing a comprehensive plan to address historical inefficiencies relating to the management of state land, including calls for accountability from some reluctant officials and ensuring consequence management. 'Our department is also addressing the challenges related to communal property associations (CPAs), particularly their dysfunctionality. To address this challenge, the department is implementing measures that include the establishment of an independent CPA office.'
