Four arrested in connection with break-in at a UK military base
LONDON (AP) — British counter terrorism police said Friday that they have arrested four people in connection with a break-in at a military base last week, during which two planes were vandalised.
Counter Terrorism Policing South East said in a statement that two men, 24 and 36, from London were arrested Thursday along with a 29-year-old woman of no fixed address 'on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.'
A 41-year-old woman, of no fixed address, was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
They remain in police custody.
The arrests relate to a break-in at the Royal Air Force base in Brize Norton, during which two planes were damaged with red paint. The pro-Palestinian activist group Palestine Action subsequently released video footage appearing to show one of the two activists who entered the base spraying the paint into a jet's turbine engines.
The group alleged that Britain was continuing to 'send military cargo, fly spy planes over Gaza and refuel U.S./Israeli fighter jets,' and condemned the country as 'an active participant in the Gaza genocide and war crimes across the Middle East.'
Earlier this week, the British government said it will ban Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws. The measure means it will be a criminal offense to belong to or support the group, with a maximum of 14 years in prison.
The group has sought to press its point with high-profile direct action, perhaps most notably in March when it targeted one of U.S. President Donald Trump's golf resorts in Scotland, painting 'Gaza is Not For Sale' in giant letters on the lawn in response to his proposal to empty the Gaza Strip of its Palestinian population.
The government said a draft order for the ban will be laid in Parliament next week. Lawmakers still need to approve it.
Britain's government has proscribed about 80 organizations, including Hamas and al-Qaida, and far-right groups such as National Action.

Body found in river after search for swimmer
The body of a 26-year-old man has been recovered from a river following an extensive search effort. Dog helps police track down illegal vape stashes
Thousands of illegal vapes, cigarettes and tobacco were seized as part of a multi-agency operation. Police officers, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Trading Standards and HMRC were assisted by Wagtail dogs, who were trained to detect tobacco, in the crackdown. During inspections in Ely, Soham and Littleport on Tuesday, 3,171 illegal vapes and 32,000 cigarettes were seized. Some of the vapes had oversized tanks and incorrect labelling, and others had not been notified to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. There were also tobacco products without the correct warnings and labelling in English. Over the last two years, Trading Standards has seized about 13,000 illegal vapes and more than 100,000 illegal cigarettes across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Sgt Mat Lupton-Pike, from the East Cambs Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Illicit cigarettes, vapes and tobacco pose a serious risk to health as well as fuelling funding for other related criminal activity. "We ask the public to continue to report any information or concerns to us. "The more information we have, the more efficient we can be at targeting those causing harm to our communities." Peter Gell, service director, regulatory services for Cambridgeshire County Council said: "These ongoing, targeted enforcement operations send a clear message to the organised crime gangs that the sale of illegal tobacco and nicotine products will not be tolerated in Cambridgeshire, and that Trading Standards, the police and HMRC are committed to taking a hard line with anyone we uncover perpetrating these crimes." Man charged with murder after a woman 'known to him' stabbed to death at east London home
A man has been charged with murder after a woman known to him was stabbed to death in east London. The victim, a woman in her 40s, was attacked at an address on Monier Road, Tower Hamlets. The Metropolitan Police attended the area alongside the London Ambulance Service at around 11pm on Thursday. Despite the efforts of police officers and paramedics, the woman was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Layek Miah, 27, of Malmesbury Road, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of murder, the force said. He has now been charged been murder and appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court on Saturday, June 28. Miah has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Central Criminal Court on Tuesday, July 1. The woman's next of kin have been made aware and are being supported by specialist officers. Detective Superintendent Mike Cagney, who leads policing in Tower Hamlets, previously said: 'I understand the local community will feel understandably shocked by this news, but I want to reassure residents we believe this to be an isolated incident, with no wider threat to the public.'
