Fantasy novel reimagines Welsh mythology for young readers

The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire by Cardiff-based writer Anna Fiteni will be published on August 28 and is set in a Welsh mining village in the 1800s.
Inspired by Welsh mythology and written with elements of the Welsh language, the story follows Sabrina Parry in a quest to save her sister Ceridwen.
Ms Fiteni said: "The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire is, ultimately, a love letter to growing up weird, classic guyliner-wearing YA romantic heroes, sisters, and my home, Wales.
"I was inspired by a lot of other stories and films while writing, like Pan's Labyrinth, Into the Woods and Hadestown, and beloved YA novels like The Cruel Prince and An Enchantment of Ravens.
"Mix those with a childhood fascination with Peter Pan and the illustrations of Cicely Mary Barker, and the lasting memory of a school trip down a coal mine, and here we are."
Ms Fiteni wrote the book while in her final year of studying in England and is shaped by Wales.
"I was lucky to be exposed to a fair bit of Welsh mythology when I was young. This isn't the case for every Welsh child," she said.
"Like the language, Welsh history and stories aren't always accessible. I noticed this particularly in the fantasy books I read.
"We have a wealth of weird and wonderful myths in Wales, but I rarely saw them put to paper. It was rarer still to see that writing done by a Welsh author."

More info Oasis fever has gripped the nation and now, ahead of their hotly-anticipated reunion shows in Cardiff, the BBC has announced a special livestream for fans. They will be broadcasting live from the Welsh capital to tie in with the return of the Gallagher brothers this weekend. The show will be hosted by Welsh presenter Jason Mohammad and Tina Daheley, who is known for stepping in to present Jeremy Vine's BBC Radio 2 show. The show will be broadcast from a site overlooking the Principality Stadium. Named Oasis: Countdown to the Comeback the show begins at 1pm on Friday, July 4. The show will not include live coverage of the actual gig, inside the Principality Stadium, but what viewers will get is a mix of special guests and on-the-ground reports from reporters speaking to fans across the city. After the gig there will also be instant reactions and live reviews as the excitement continues into the night. Talking about the live show on his Instagram story, Jason said: "As a Cardiff boy and @oasis fan so looking forward to this show with @tinadaheley. See you Friday" followed by an okay emoji. (Image: Instagram/Jason Mohammad) Recently Liam Gallagher told fans it was not him they heard rehearsing in the Principality Stadium on Monday, June 30. Liam appears to have jokingly confirmed the soundchecks are not actually the famous brothers after fans thought they heard him signing Cigarettes and Alcohol as the sun beat down on the venue. Now, replying to a video of the soundchecks, Liam said on X: "Mmm I'm not sure about the vocals there too aggressive he really needs to take a chill pill man he's just so angry all the time I don't know who he thinks he is as far as I'm concerned he's just a bigmouth from up north". A fan then asked Liam to "confirm or deny" if it was him rehearsing. Liam replied: "I've been in my pool all day doing under water farts so it's defo a recording from rehearsals unless there's 2 of me which I'm absolutely 1 million per cent here for well there for as well".

Liam Gallagher issues update on soundcheck singing at Cardiff's Principality Stadium

Liam Gallagher issues update on soundcheck singing at Cardiff's Principality Stadium Some fans and locals believed they heard Liam Gallagher rehearsing at the Principality Stadium As Cardiff gears up to host the first Oasis reunion concerts many have heard soundchecks coming from the Principality Stadium. Now Liam appears to have jokingly confirmed the soundchecks are not actually the famous brothers – but then with Liam you never do know. Soundchecks could be heard, with the song Cigarettes and Alcohol playing, on Monday, June 30. Many believed this was Liam and Noel back together in the stadium for the first time in over 10 years. Content cannot be displayed without consent As always with Liam he could be joking with fans, so maybe the brothers are in Cardiff after all, but this points to the duo not yet being in the Welsh capital. Follow live updates as Cardiff gets ready for the reunion here. Set-up at the Principality is already well under way, as seen in a seven-days-to-go video released last week, and a full soundcheck will be held later in the week. The Mirror has reported that Liam and Noel, plus new drummer Joey Waronker and guitarists Andy Bell, Gem Archer, and Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, will take the opportunity to make sure their performance is tip-top ahead of Friday and Saturday. A source close to the band told the Mirror: "With a new line-up and it being such a huge first show the boys will do some songs inside the venue too. "Some tours would start with a smaller show or take a week or two to get into the groove again but there is no time for that and also Liam and Noel want every night to be massive. "This is such a huge comeback show and they are taking it very seriously. It all points to it being an incredible comeback tour."
