UK's Wise plans US primary listing amid London market woes

CNA05-06-2025
Money transfer company Wise on Thursday said it intends to move its primary listing to the U.S. from London, the latest British company to do so, sending shares up over 8 per cent.
Wise, which will maintain a secondary listing in London, had been exploring its listing options lately - a shift seen across the London markets due to stunted growth opportunities and lower valuations.
"We believe the addition of a primary U.S. listing would help us accelerate our mission and bring substantial strategic and capital market benefits to Wise and our owners," Kristo Kaarmann, co-founder and CEO of Wise said.
Shares of the money transfer firm were up 8.7 per cent at 1,177 pence in early trading. They have risen about 40 per cent in the last 12 months.
Metals investor Cobalt Holdings, backed by Glencore, also scrapped its plans for a London IPO on Wednesday, which, according to one source, was driven by a lack of demand.
In recent months, Unilever chose Amsterdam for the primary listing of its ice-cream business while fast-fashion firm Shein has been considering Hong Kong after plans for a London IPO were met with Chinese regulatory hurdles, according to sources.
Wise plans to tap domestic institutional and retail investors in the U.S., the largest global constituent of investors, to shore up global demand for its services, notably Wise Platform - a money transfer service that Wise markets as fast and low-cost.
British peer Revolut, which competes Wise on pricing and features, has also been aggressively pushing into the U.S., taking advantage of a lucrative playing field which houses some of the world's largest financial institutions.
Wise also reported its annual earnings, where underlying pretax profit rose 17 per cent to 282.1 million pounds ($382 million) in the period, benefiting from strong customer growth and account adoption.

OPEC+ set to further speed up output hikes, sources say

LONDON :OPEC+ will likely agree to further accelerate oil output increases on Saturday at its first meeting since oil prices jumped, and then retreated, following Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran. The group, which pumps about half of the world's oil, has been curtailing production since 2022 to support the market. But it has reversed course this year to regain market share and as U.S. President Donald Trump demanded the group pumped more to help keep gasoline prices lower. The group may agree to raise output by as much as 550,000 barrels per day in August, up from monthly increases of 411,000 bpd it approved for May, June and July, and 138,000 bpd in April, two sources familiar with the discussions said. Eight members of the group - Saudi Arabia, Russia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Kazakhstan and Algeria - are due to meet online on Saturday at 0900 GMT to decide policy for August. The eight began unwinding their most recent output cut of 2.2 million bpd in April. They then accelerated the hikes in May, June and July, despite the extra supply weighing on crude prices. The acceleration came after some OPEC+ members, such as Kazakhstan and Iraq, produced above their targets, angering other members that were sticking to cuts. Kazakh output returned to growth last month and matched an all-time high. OPEC+, which groups the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies led by Russia, is looking to expand its market share against the backdrop of growing supplies from other producers like the United States, sources have said. So far, OPEC+ has announced production increases of 1.37 million bpd between April and July, representing 62 per cent of the production cut of 2.2 million bpd that it is unwinding.

Trump says 'probably 12' tariff letters being sent out on Jul 7

US President Donald Trump said on Friday (Jul 4) that he had signed 12 trade letters to be sent out next week ahead of an impending deadline for his tariffs to take effect. "I signed some letters and they'll go out on Monday, probably 12," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, adding that the countries that the letters would be sent to will be announced on the same day. His comments come days before steeper duties -- which the president said on Thursday would range between 10 and 70 per cent -- are set to take effect on dozens of economies, from Taiwan to the European Union. The tariffs were part of a broader announcement in April where Trump imposed a 10 percent duty on goods from almost all trading partners, with a plan to step up these rates for a select group within days. But he swiftly paused the hikes until Jul 9, allowing for trade talks to take place. Countries have been pushing to strike deals that would help them avoid these elevated duties. So far, the Trump administration has unveiled deals with the United Kingdom and Vietnam, while Washington and Beijing agreed to temporarily lower staggeringly high levies on each other's products. As his Jul 9 deadline approaches, Trump has repeatedly said he plans to inform countries of US tariff rates by sending them letters. Aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump said sending notices would be much easier than "sitting down and working 15 different things". He added: "You know, with the UK, we did that. And it was great for both parties. With China, we did that, and I think it's very good for both parties." But he said it was "much easier to send a letter saying, 'Listen, we know we have a certain deficit, or in some cases a surplus, but not too many. And ... this is what you have to pay, if you want to do business (with) the United States.'"
