Round 19 team lists: Lachlan Galvin drops back to the bench as the Roosters welcome back their superstar halfback

News.com.au08-07-2025
Lachlan Galvin's role will again be in the spotlight after the high-profile mid-season recruit was named on the bench for Canterbury's trip to North Queensland as they look to bounce back from last week's second-half fadeout.
The discourse around where he should play has been heightened with confirmation Toby Sexton and Reed Mahoney won't be at the club next season, but coach Cameron Ciraldo has always maintained the bench is the best place for him right now.
Galvin will likely come on in the halves at some stage which will see Sexton shift to hooker, with the Bulldogs keen to pick up a win after they blew an 18-0 lead against the Broncos.
They welcome back their Origin stars for the trip north but have lost winger Marcelo Montoya which sees Enari Tuala keep his spot in the team.
They face a Cowboys side that features all four Origin stars including Reuben Cotter who has replaced John Bateman in the back row.
Ben Hunt's return from a hamstring injury has forced a major change at the Broncos with the veteran named at hooker for Sunday's match against the Titans.
The former Origin star hasn't played since round 10 but will start the match with Billy Walters to come off the bench, while Selwyn Cobbo has been dropped to the reserves.
'We have seen what he has done at Origin playing that hooker role, so if he can bring that back here then the boys will be cheering,' Broncos forward Kobe Hetherington said.
They face a Titans team that gets Jayden Campbell and David Fifita back, with the barnstorming back-rower to make his return from an ankle injury off the bench.
Fletcher Hunt is the man to replace Kalyn Ponga at the back for the Knights for their home game against the Storm, with Newcastle also welcoming back Leo Thompson and Greg Marzhew.
The Storm have named fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen after he was a late scratching last week, while Trent Loiero, Harry Grant and Cameron Munster are all listed on an extended bench and in some doubt given they play on Wednesday night.
The Roosters have received a huge boost with luckless halfback Sam Walker set to play his first NRL game of the season after a recent setback, with Sandon Smith the man to drop out of the 17.
Their Origin stars are all set to play, while Victor Radley and Billy Smith have been named to return from injury.
Ivan Cleary has named his Origin quintet on an extended bench for the showdown with Parramatta, with Brian To'o likely to be in some doubt given he's been battling a knee injury.
Former Tiger Tallyn Da Silva will make his Eels debut off the bench on Sunday, while the Dolphins have named Sean O'Sullivan as the guy to replace the injured Kodi Nikorima.
And Jarome Luai and Api Koroisau are back for the Wests Tigers this weekend against a Warriors side that has made some big changes with Tanah Boyd replacing Luke Metcalf at halfback, while Taine Tuaupiki gets the nod at fullback.

Footy world uses the same word for Toby Greene's latest act

The Giants stormed home for a stunning 38-point win over the Swans on Friday night, but huge sections of the footy world were left using the same word for Toby Greene after his latest aggressive act against Isaac Heeney. The Swans led by 28 points at halftime, but the Giants turned the match on its head after the main break, prevailing 15.12 (102) to 8.10 (58) to effectively end Sydney's season. With both teams battling for a shot at September in a massive Sydney Derby, Greene adopted his usual confrontational style, but may have stepped over the line in the first quarter. And at a time when the Giants need him more than ever, the skipper could be looking at yet another stint on the sidelines with four matches now remaining in the regular season. The Swans copped an unfortunate blow in the first minute of the game when Hayden McLean took an accidental shot to the head and was immediately subbed out. Despite that setback, Sydney still worked its way on top in the first term before Greene struck. Midway through the quarter, Sydney's Aaron Francis spilled a mark before finding Errol Gulden, who got smashed in a tackle as the footy bounced free. Francis managed to get it back and handballed to Heeney, who shrugged off Greene's attempted tackle before he was wrapped up by Sam Taylor Greene didn't take kindly to being dropped by Heeney, returning to the contest and appearing to aim his elbow or forearm right at the side of the Sydney superstar's head. Greene looked up at the umpire hoping for a holding the ball decision before the umpire called a high tackle against him. 'They reversed it, I think it was Toby Greene for high contact after the holding the ball decision,' Leigh Montagna said calling the action on Fox Footy. When Alastair Lynch suggested Greene 'gave him one to the guts', Dwayne Russell fired back: 'I reckon he got him a bit higher than the guts looking at that replay.' The commentary team then got on with calling the action, with the Swans kicking six straight goals either side of quarter-time to grab control of the game. But Ben Dixon was focused on Greene at the first break. 'No shots fired during the week, very quiet leading into Derby 31 and Toby Greene might've been saving his rounds because the first quarter he was firing shots left, right and centre,' he said from the boundary line. 'Isaac Heeney's 'don't argue' on Toby Greene, he said 'I'm not having that', comes in with a forearm to the head, reverse free kick. That was holding the ball. 'And then off the ball with Aaron Francis, just one to the chest, throwing his weight around. 'He's not going to miss many tonight the way the captain's going about it.' Greene also showed his contempt towards fellow agitator Tom Papley heading to the halftime break, telling Fox Footy 'he's looking overweight, see how he goes second half'. Social media immediately caught fire over the incident between Heeney and the man who holds two highly unwanted AFL records. Greene has been hit with 25 charges by the AFL Match Review committee and $35,600 worth of fines, both all-time records in the competition's history. Footy producer Brad Klibansky wrote on X: 'That's a weak act from Toby Greene.' Bryce O'Connor tweeted: 'I normally defend Toby, but that was s**thouse!' Footy account Outbreezy WC said: 'I like Toby Greene but he is 100% a dirty player.' The Surly Sportsman replied: 'I like him too, but someone needs to smack him in his face for real.' A whole range of footy fans all used the same word to describe the combative Giants star. X account @drawnbarrier13 wrote: 'Once a grub, always a grub.' @matthewsmith510 said: 'What an absolute f**king grub Toby is.' @danieIthompson offered: 'Toby Greene is a complete grub. Complete myth too, hasn't been good since 2019.' Jon Malpa stated: 'Toby Greene proving yet again that he is the biggest grub in the AFL.' BMacca Sports added: 'Red mist descending on Toby atm … I get playing hard but the bloke is an all-time grub.' There were many more, but we think you get the idea. Many also suggested Greene was heading for yet another stint on the sidelines. @ARJ7X tweeted: 'Toby might be having a holiday after that.' @straightrocket added simply: 'Bye Toby.' It remains to be seen if the former All Australian captain will indeed face another suspension. But at a time when his club is fighting for a shot at a first premiership, he could be giving coach Adam Kingsley the type of headache he desperately doesn't need. Apart from Greene's first-half moment of madness, the Giants flexed their premiership aspirations in a sensational turnaround that leaves them knocking on the door of the top four and the Swans planning for 2026.

Reece Walsh denied last-ditch match winner as Eels snatch epic boilover

The Eels have beaten the Broncos 22-20 on the back of a Mitchell Moses masterclass after Reece Walsh was denied a last-ditch match winner in a thriller at Suncorp Stadium. Moses was superb in his return from injury finishing with a linebreak assist and three try assists, while Origin winger Zac Lomax had a classy double and Josh Addo-Carr scored his 150th try and the match winner. Xavier Willison was penalised for being third man in and making dangerous contact below the knee as the Eels took the lead through Mitchell Moses' boot. Addo-Carr was penalised for an escort to give Adam Reynolds the chance to lock up the scores. Walsh let a Moses bomb bounce to allow Sean Russell to produce a freak chip and chase try to give the Eels the lead. Reynolds pounced on an intercept from Dean Hawkins' pass to run away and score a long-range try to square it up again. Reynolds turned provider to put Kobe Hetherington through a hole and he did the rest to charge 30 metres to score and give the Broncos the lead before the break. Moses put the ball on a dime for Lomax with a pinpoint try assist off the boot just before half-time. Moses and Will Penisini combined to put Lomax over for a double as the Eels took back the lead. Walsh produced a brilliant sidestep to slice through and set up Billy Walters for a try as the Broncos took back the lead. Addo-Carr dived over in the corner for his milestone 150th try as the Eels took the lead yet again. Walsh looked to have pounced on a Joash Papalii blunder to score a late match winner, but the try was ruled out due to the Broncos fullback being off-side. The Eels held on for a deserved win in a seesawing epic to all but end Brisbane's top four hopes. MOSES STARS IN 'BITTERSWEET' MOMENT FOR EELS FANS Mitchell Moses proved why he's considered a top three halfback in the competition, starring for the Eels in his first game since Origin II. Moses has endured a wretched run with injury over the past two seasons and in 2025, has only played in seven games. It's no coincidence that Moses' poor luck with injury has correlated with the club's ordinary form but with the star half back on deck, Parramatta handed in one of their best performances of the season. Moses was in everything good the Eels did and his elite kicking game was evident for all to see. 'It's probably bittersweet for Parra fans as it's an insight into what they've missed,' Dan Ginnane said on Fox League. WALSH'S ACHILLES HEEL REARS UGLY HEAD At his best Reece Walsh is the best attacking weapon in the game, but unless he cuts the errors out of his game he won't be the best. Walsh put in a rocks and diamonds display to nearly pull the Broncos out of the fire, but his penchant for errors came back to bite him and his team. Walsh had 147 run metres from 14 runs to go with three tackle busts, a linebreak and a try assist and nearly the match winning try. But the fact he was off-side blew his chance at scoring the game winner and he also had three errors, a missed tackle and gave away the crucial penalty. Walsh is an absolute freak of a player, but he needs to cut the errors out of his game if the Broncos want to go all the way to a drought-breaking premiership.

Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes cleared for NRL finals return after avoiding surgery on shoulder

Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes is expected to return to the field for the NRL finals now that scans on his left shoulder have revealed he does not need surgery. Hughes went down during Melbourne's 34-30 win over the Sydney Roosters on Thursday night, clutching his left arm after attempting to tackle Roosters captain James Tedesco. ABC Sport is live blogging every round of the AFL and NRL seasons in 2025. The club confirmed the 2024 Dally M winner had dislocated his left shoulder and was taken to hospital after medics were unable to put the shoulder back into place at the ground. However, the Storm has confirmed the star half does not need surgery and is anticipated to be fit for the finals, which begin on Thursday, September 11. "Scans conducted on Friday have confirmed that Hughes does not require surgery for the dislocation," the Storm said in a statement on Friday afternoon. "He will begin a rehab program with the aim of returning for the NRL finals." Penrith star halfback Nathan Cleary had a similar injury in round 24 last season, but was able to return and lead the Panthers to a fourth consecutive premiership win.
