AI impersonator targets US officials posing as Marco Rubio
A State Department cable revealed the imposter created a Signal account under the display name 'Marco.Rubio@state.gov' in mid-June. The individual left voicemails and sent texts, though the message contents remain undisclosed. The State Department confirmed awareness of the incident, stating it is under investigation to strengthen cybersecurity measures.
The incident is part of two separate campaigns under scrutiny. The second involves a Russia-linked cyber actor impersonating a fictitious State Department official since April, targeting think tank scholars, activists, and journalists through phishing attempts on personal Gmail accounts.
The FBI had previously warned of similar schemes, where malicious actors impersonate senior US officials via AI-generated voice messages (vishing) or texts (smishing) to gain trust and access sensitive accounts. In May, an impersonator breached White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles' contacts, prompting an FBI probe.
Experts warn that AI voice cloning tools, now widely accessible, heighten risks of deepfake disinformation. Last year, a robocall mimicking President Joe Biden urged voters in New Hampshire to skip the Democratic primary, raising concerns over AI-driven election interference.

Spanish teen investigated over nude AI images of classmates
MADRID: Spanish police said Sunday they were investigating a 17-year-old on suspicion of using artificial intelligence to deepfake nude images of female classmates for sale. The probe was launched after 16 young women at an educational institute in the Valencia region came forward to complain of AI-generated images of them circulating on social media and the internet. The first complaint was lodged in December by an adolescent who said an AI-generated video and faked photos resembling her 'completely naked' were posted on a social media account started under her name. As more accusations came in, police suspected the images were the work of a student in the same institute, according to a statement by the police. Tracking the IP addresses used to create the bogus accounts led them to the home of the 17-year-old now under investigation on suspicion of corruption of minors. It is not the first time that Spanish authorities have detected AI-created pornographic images of minors. The government in March said it would put forward a law to treat such deepfaked sexual imagery created by AI without consent as a crime. The bill, which Madrid claims to be a first in Europe, has yet to be passed by the parliament. – AFP

‘Completely naked': Spanish teen under investigation after 16 classmates say AI nudes of them posted online
MADRID, July 27 — Spanish police have opened an investigation into a 17-year-old student accused of using artificial intelligence to generate and sell deepfake nude images of female classmates. Authorities launched the probe after 16 girls from an educational institute in the Valencia region reported that manipulated sexual images of them had been circulated online and on social media. The case began in December when one student filed a complaint, saying that AI-generated photos and a video — showing her 'completely naked' — had been posted to a fake social media account created in her name. According to a police statement, investigators later traced the IP addresses behind the accounts to the suspect's home, leading to his identification. He is now being investigated for the offence of corruption of minors. This is not the first time Spanish authorities have uncovered AI-generated explicit content involving minors. In March, the government announced plans to introduce legislation that would criminalise the creation of non-consensual AI-generated sexual imagery.
