Measat obtains licence to offer satellite services in India through NSIL

KUALA LUMPUR: Measat Global Bhd has secured authorisation from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) on June 30, to offer its satellite services in the country through NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL).
With IN-SPACe's authorisation, Measat is now able to offer space-based communications and broadcasting services in the Indian market, in line with requirements of its space policy for foreign satellite operators.
Measat chief operating officer Yau Chyong Lim said Measat has worked with NSIL in various capacities.
"Their vast experience in India will be a key advantage for Measat in leveraging our capabilities and satellite fleet to support current and future client needs.
"Whether it is in broadcasting, bridging the rural communications gap, or other uses, we are confident that Measat's portfolio of services has broad potential for
application in this region in the coming years," he said in a statement today.
NSIL former chairman and managing director Radhakrishnan Durairaj said through the availability of Measat's capacity, Indian broadcasters will be able to access one of the strongest satellite neighbourhoods in Asia Pacific to offer a wide range of content to a global audience.
He added that as a long-time partner of Measat, NSIL hopes the international collaborations will further contribute to achieving India's national goals for the space industry besides helping local businesses in other sectors reach their growth targets.
NSIL, a government-owned company under India's Department of Space, is a satellite owner and operator, providing services to users from both government and private sectors.
Through NSIL, Measat offers satellite capacity to pay-TV operators and broadcasters in the Indian market, facilitating the distribution of over 600 TV channels and reaching over 11 million direct-to-home customers in India, as well as supports video content distribution across Asia, Australia, Africa and Southern Europe.

'We also have to have a single federal standard, not 50 different states regulating this industry in the future,' Trump said. Michael Kratsios, head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters on Wednesday the departments of Commerce and State will partner with the industry to 'deliver secure full-stack AI export packages, including hardware models, software applications and standards to America's friends and allies around the world.' An expansion in exports of a full suite of AI products could benefit AI chip juggernauts Nvidia and AMD as well as AI model giants Alphabet's Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Facebook parent Meta. Trump signed three executive orders on Wednesday that incorporated elements of the action plan, including the loosening of environmental rules, establishing rules for chip exports and seeking to limit political bias in AI technology. Biden feared U.S. adversaries like China could harness AI chips produced by companies like Nvidia and AMD to supercharge its military and harm allies. The former president, who left office in January, imposed a raft of restrictions on U.S. exports of AI chips to China and other countries that it feared could divert the semiconductors to America's top global rival. Trump rescinded Biden's executive order aimed at promoting competition, protecting consumers and ensuring AI was not used for misinformation. He also rescinded Biden's so-called AI diffusion rule, which capped the amount of American AI computing capacity some countries were allowed to obtain via U.S. AI chip imports. 'Our edge (in AI) is not something that we can sort of rest on our laurels,' Vice President JD Vance said in a separate appearance at the event, which was organized by White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks and his co-hosts on the 'All-In' podcast. 'If we're regulating ourselves to death and allowing the Chinese to catch up to us, that's not something ... we should blame the Chinese for..., that is something we should blame our own leaders for, for having stupid policies that allow other countries to catch up with America,' Vance said. The AI plan, according to a senior administration official, does not address national security concerns around Nvidia's H20 chip, which powers AI models and was designed to walk right up to the line of prior restrictions on Chinese AI chip access. Trump blocked the export of the H20 to China in April but allowed the company to resume sales earlier this month, sparking rare public criticism from fellow Republicans. FAST-TRACKING DATA CENTERS The plan also calls for fast-tracking the construction of data centers by loosening environmental regulations and utilizing federal land to expedite development of the projects, including any power supplies. The administration will seek to establish new exclusions for data centers under the National Environmental Policy Act and streamline permits under the Clean Water Act. Trump directed his administration in January to develop the plan. Trump is expected to take additional actions in the upcoming weeks that will help Big Tech secure the vast amounts of electricity it needs to power the energy-guzzling data centers needed for the rapid expansion of AI, Reuters previously reported. U.S. power demand is hitting record highs this year after nearly two decades of stagnation as AI and cloud computing data centers balloon in number and size across the country. The export expansion plans take a page from deals unveiled in May that gave the United Arab Emirates expanded access to advanced artificial intelligence chips from the United States after previously facing restrictions over Washington's concerns that China could access the technology. - Reuters

Stefan Rousseau/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo LONDON/NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Britain and India will sign a landmark free trade agreement on Thursday during a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sealing a deal to cut tariffs on goods from textiles to whisky and cars and allow more market access for businesses. The two countries concluded talks on the long-coveted free trade pact in May after three years of stop-start negotiations, with both sides hastening efforts to clinch a deal in the shadow of tariff turmoil sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement between the world's fifth and sixth largest economies aims to increase bilateral trade by a further 25.5 billion pounds ($34 billion) by 2040. It will take effect after the British parliament and India's federal cabinet approve it, likely within a year. "Our landmark trade deal with India is a major win for Britain. It will create thousands of British jobs across the UK, unlock new opportunities for businesses and drive growth," British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. The agreement will be signed during Modi's fourth visit to the UK since he took office in 2014. The leaders will also sign a strategic partnership covering areas such as defence and climate, and strengthen co-operation on tackling crime. Under the trade agreement, tariffs on Scotch whisky will drop to 75% from 150% immediately, and then slide to 40% over the next decade, according to the British government. On cars, India will cut duties to 10% from over 100% under a quota system that will be gradually liberalised. In return, Indian manufacturers are expected to gain access to the UK market for electric and hybrid vehicles, also under a quota system, Indian commerce ministry officials said. The ministry has said 99% of Indian exports to Britain would benefit from zero duties under the deal, including textiles, while Britain will see reductions on 90% of its tariff lines. The agreement represents Britain's most significant trade deal since it left the EU in 2020, though the projected boost to British economic output, of 4.8 billion pounds a year by 2040, is small compared to the country's gross domestic product of 2.6 trillion pounds in 2024. The deal will also facilitate easier access for temporary business visitors, though visas are not covered. Britain and India also agreed to ensure workers no longer have to make social security contributions in both India and Britain during temporary postings in the other country. Under the trade deal, British firms will be able to access India's procurement market for projects in sectors such as clean energy, and it also covers services sectors such as insurance. India didn't succeed in its efforts to get an exemption from Britain's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) - which could levy higher taxes on polluters from 2027 - as part of the deal. The two sides also haven't concluded talks over a separate bilateral investment treaty, which were held in parallel to trade negotiations but still continue.
