Blockbusters Take Over Theme Parks for a Mega Movie Summer

Gizmodo18-06-2025
Summer hits the theme parks and vacation destinations in this week's theme park news. Universal Studios Hollywood takes fans back in time with Back to the Future and Jaws while bringing in the future with new Wicked and Jurassic World fun. Don't worry, the Universal Monsters aren't far behind; in fact they're all hitting up Sin City for Universal Horror Unleashed's opening in Las Vegas this August.
Over at the Disney Parks, Walt Disney World gears up for Test Track's reopening. Meanwhile, Old Navy and Disney collab on one heck of a roadtrip across America with their new summer Mickey & Friends collection.
And just in time for the release of DC Studios Superman, Six Flags gets the Justice League to unite for new superhero experiences!
Mega Movie Summer at Universal Studios Hollywood
Iconic blockbuster movies abound as new entertainment, fandom foodie offerings, and more. To celebrate Jaws' 50th anniversary, the hanging shark makes its return to the theme park with a special Quint and Brody meet and greet, which is delightful and the actors doing their Robert Shaw and Roy Scheider impressions are fantastic. Hey if the kids can meet Mario and Luigi, letting the adults meet the Orca crew is a great compromise. There's also more Amblin amusement park presence, with Doc Brown, his pal Marty McFly, and his trusty first time traveler Einstein the dog in the DeLorean. Both films get awesome curated cinematic cuisine at the parks too.
For Jurassic franchise fans, there is now a Mosasaur roar on Jurassic World: The Ride and a new tiny triceratops meet and greet (which was temporarily in London for the premiere of Jurassic World: Rebirth). Wicked fans will also be happy to learn they can meet Elphaba and Glinda in an alternating capacity and there's tons of new Wicked merch in its designated store.
Universal Horror Unleashed: Universal Monsters – Area15 Las Vegas
All of the Universal Monsters will be featured in one haunted house at Universal Horror Unleashed, which is sharing more updates ahead of its arrival at Las Vegas' immersive experience destination Area15.
'We've got four incredible haunted houses that put you right in the middle of iconic and terrifying scenes. In the Universal Monsters House, you get to follow Van Helsing as he battles all of your favorite classic monsters. Our legacy of creating horror in Universal Studios goes all the way back to the beginning of the film itself. We've been creating iconic horror movies that have stood the test of time. Our Universal Monsters Haunted House takes you through the stories of all of the classic Universal Monsters. All of them are there, and you get to walk into their world,' Universal Creative's Lorelei Lee shared in the video you can watch above.
We can't wait for this one, especially since The Creature from the Black Lagoon's Gill-man will be represented at last in Horror Unleashed's Universal Monsters house.
Shelby Honea, executive producer at Universal Creative added, 'We're bringing something entirely new to Las Vegas. It is a year round destination, and so is our horror brand.' The destination is currently slated to feature houses in the universes of The Exorcist, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Horror Nights original canon characters. There will also be performers, walk-around scare-actors, themed frightful foods, and scary sips! This British Comedian Auditioned For A Role In Barbie – But Lost Out To Will Ferrell

Barbie was one of the most star-studded movies of the last decade, so it's no secret that competition was stiff to land a coveted role in such a stellar ensemble. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starred in Greta Gerwig's Oscar-nominated movie about the iconic doll, completed by a cast that included Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and many more. There was also a memorable supporting role from Will Ferrell, who played the rollerskating Mattel CEO. But before the gig went to the Anchorman actor, there was a British comedian up for the same role: James Acaster. The standup comic has been venturing into acting in recent years, having landed roles in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and last year's comedy-adventure film Seize Them! with The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Comedian's Comedian Podcast with Stuart Goldsmith (@comcompod) As revealed in a recently unearthed interview, the Off Menu podcast host also went for a role in the 2023 record-breaking blockbuster. Speaking on The Comedian's Comedian Podcast with Stuart Goldsmith last year, James opened up about his acting career when he was asked about projects he had unsuccessfully auditioned for. 'The Barbie movie. The part went to Will Ferrell,' James recalled, before adding: 'Come on, why are they even getting me in the room?' He also clarified that he 'liked the audition though', adding 'that's fun, it's learning'. Earlier this year, director Greta set the record straight following reports of a Barbie sequel. A spokesperson for the director insisted that there was 'no legitimacy' to the story that a follow-up was in the earlier stages, while Warner Bros. also called the reports 'inaccurate'. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie's film company is set to follow the success of Barbie by producing a new movie based on the Monopoly board game. Related... Tanya Simon to Lead CBS News' '60 Minutes'

CBS News named Tanya Simon the new executive producer of '60 Minutes,' making her just the fourth executive to lead the program in its nearly 60 years on air and the first woman to do so. She takes the reins of the show at a tumultuous time, when the venerable newsmagazine has been put in the crosshairs of the Trump administration and the fortunes of corporate parent Paramount Global. 'It is a privilege to lead '60 Minutes' and its formidable team of journalists,' Simon said in a prepared statement. ''60' is in a class of its own, upholding a legacy of extraordinary and thought-provoking journalism for more than half a century. I'm deeply committed to this level of excellence and I look forward to delivering an exciting season of signature '60' stories that cover a wide range of subjects for a broad audience and engage viewers with their world.' Her father, Bob Simon, was a '60 Minutes' correspondent who was respected for his knowledge of foreign affairs. The newsmagazine has been generating headlines of its own in recent months. Paramount earlier this month agreed to pay $16 million to President Donald Trump to end what has been viewed in many legal circles as a flimsy lawsuit tied to a pre-Election Day interview between Bill Whitaker, a '60 Minutes' correspondent, and former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. The decision has vexed supporters of the program and of journalism in general, who charge Paramount executives risk tarnishing a media brand that has long sought to hold power to account and to probe events with an independent lens. Paramount is in the midst of trying to push forward on a sale to Skydance Media, and Trump's lawsuit, and a separate probe by the Federal Communications Commission are seen as attempts to block that goal, or to squeeze payments out of the corporation in exchange for a path to the merger. People familiar with CBS News operations believe weeks of leaks about Paramount's legal machinations and of the '60 Minutes' staff's aversion to any kind of settlement have served to undermine the show.'60 Minutes' continues to generate some of TV's highest ratings. Simon has been overseeing the program since its previous EP, Bill Owens, stepped down, citing interference in the show's editorial processes by Paramount. Wendy McMahon, the CBS executive who ran CBS News and its local stations, left a few weeks afterwards, noting that she and the company had different views of how to run operations. Before taking on an interim executive producer role in April, Simone was the show's executive editor for six seasons. Prior to that, she was a senior producer whose responsibilities included overseeing digital content and supervising production of '60 Minutes Sports,' a monthly sports-focused edition of the program that ran on Showtime. She joined the staff in 2000, working with correspondent Ed Bradley on a variety of reports including the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Duke University lacrosse rape case and a rare interview with Bob Dylan. Simon went on to produce for nearly all the '60 Minutes' correspondents over the next decade, including Steve Kroft, Lesley Stahl, Scott Pelley, Anderson Cooper, and her father. 'Tanya Simon understands what makes '60 Minutes' tick. She is an innovative leader, an exceptional producer and someone who knows how to inspire people,' said Tom Cibrowski, recently named president and executive editor of CBS News, in a statement. 'Tanya knows that the success of today's '60 Minutes' depends on delivering a weekly mix of the most informative, impactful and entertaining stories and investigative journalism from around the world.
