Pacesetting German Chocolate Maker Ritter Sport Grows By 50% In U.K.

Forbes31-03-2025
Ritter Sport has built strong momentum in the U.K. market.
Value growth of family-owned chocolate brand Ritter Sport hit 50% last year in the British market, the biggest ever gain for the German company's British affiliate since it was established in 2014. The boost has encouraged the business to move forward with a newcomer brand—Amicelli—bought from pet food to confectionery maker, Mars Corporation in August 2020.
Ritter Sport's year-over-year increase in 2024 was its highest ever. It was also achieved on a strong comparison base because 2023 had already been a record-breaker. The growth was fairly even across big British grocery players like Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, and online supermarket Ocado.
The UK is one of the biggest chocolate markets in the world valued at about $6.5 billion. Of this the chocolate tablet (or block) category is worth $1.4bn, second only to Germany in Europe, and slightly ahead of France.
Based on Nielsen ScanTrack data for 2024, Ritter Sport, founded in 1912, was 215% ahead of the overall British confectionery market growth when it came to grocery multiples. The strong gains come in an environment where cocoa costs have gone through the roof resulting in rising prices in the past two years, and highly-inflated pricing of this season's Easter eggs—all at a time when consumer spending is being reined in, according to the latest data from KPMG.
So how has Ritter Sport cut through? A combination of strategic initiatives is the answer. U.K. and Ireland managing director, Benedict Daniels, said: 'The success is driven by our core block products and innovations such as Amicelli and Ritter Sport Duo.' The latter combines two flavor varieties in one bar. Novel lines and flavors have enabled the brand to expand distribution and shelf space within the grocery multiples. In a statement, the brand said: 'The launch of Ritter Sport Duo has added significant incremental category value.'
Daniels told me: 'A big catalyst was that we started with Tesco in January 2024. We previously traded with them in the mid-90s, so it's fantastic to start again. Other accounts also showed significant growth' a lot of it from innovation. As well as the Duo introduction, we had several new flavors; Pistachio in particular is one of the most successful products we've ever launched in the U.K.'
Benedict Daniels: 'Britain and Ireland consistently have the highest chocolate consumption per ... More capita, affording Ritter Sport huge room for accelerated growth.'
According to Daniels pistachio is typically the top selling SKU of every range at the moment and often the top premium nut SKU with retailers it's listed in, ahead of more established brands like Lindt and Green & Black's, and challengers like Tony's Chocolonely.
Coupled with store expansion and new product development, Ritter Sport has grown its team and infrastructure over the past three years to give it a higher profile among Brits. Last year, this was backed by the brand's largest-ever U.K. marketing spend which led to record penetration and sales growth. A DHL partnership to boost capacity, co-packing and direct-to-consumer capabilities plus enhanced vertical integration at the company's cocoa farm in Nicaragua have also helped.
Daniels added: 'Britain and Ireland consistently have the highest chocolate consumption per capita, affording Ritter Sport huge room for accelerated growth in both all-year-round and seasonal segments.'
The German brand is investing heavily in its visually very distinct 'World of More' platform featuring its Don Chocco sloth which represents the company's value chain and Nicaraguan cocoa. 'This platform was tested well before it went to market and has been a significant driver. It focuses on taste, quality and sustainability,' said Daniels.
The MD added: 'The big change from last year and into 2025 is that we are investing significantly behind our second brand Amicelli. It had an initial test in Sainsbury's in 2023 which was very positive and in December actually out-sold iconic boxed SKUs like Ferrero Rocher T16 200g. It was then rolled out into Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose, Ocado and Amazon in 2024.
Ritter Sport has plans to keep the momentum behind Amicelli going this year and retain it leading growth position in the U.K. The company claims to have out-performed the British chocolate market for 20 consecutive quarters allowing it to more than double its share in the past five years.'

Trump seeks to use Canada's recognition of Palestinian state as leverage in trade talks

WASHINGTON — President Trump said Canada's announcement it will recognize a Palestinian state 'will make it very hard' for the U.S. to reach a trade agreement with its northern neighbor. Trump's threat, posted in the early hours Thursday on his social media network, is the latest way he has sought to use his trade war to coerce countries on unrelated issues and is a swing from the ambivalence he has expressed about other countries making such a move. The Republican president said this week that he didn't mind British Prime Minister Keir Starmer taking a position on the issue of formally recognizing Palestinian statehood. And last week he said that French President Emmanuel Macron's similar move was 'not going to change anything.' But Trump, who has heckled Canada for months and suggested it should become its 51st U.S. state, indicated on Thursday that Prime Minister Mark Carney's similar recognition would become leverage ahead of a deadline he set in trade talks. 'Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine,' Trump said in his Truth Social post. 'That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!!' Trump has threatened to impose a 35% tariff on Canada if no deal is reached by Friday, when he's said he will levy tariffs against goods from dozens of countries if they don't reach agreements with the U.S. Some imports from Canada are still protected by the 2020 United States Mexico Canada Agreement, which is up for renegotiation next year. Carney's announcement Wednesday that Canada would recognize a Palestinian state in September comes amid a broader global shift against Israel's policies in Gaza. Though Trump this week said he was 'not going to take a position' on recognizing a Palestinian state, he later said that such a move would be rewarding Hamas, whose surprise Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel prompted a declaration of war and a massive military retaliation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump's new cudgel against Canada comes after he moved to impose steep tariffs on Brazil because it indicted its former President Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally who like the U.S. president has faced criminal charges for attempting to overturn the results of his election loss. Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to impose his threatened 50% tariffs on Brazil, setting a legal rationale that Brazil's policies and criminal prosecution of Bolsonaro constitute an economic emergency under a 1977 law. Trump had threatened the tariffs July 9 in a letter to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. But the legal basis of that threat was an earlier executive order premised on trade imbalances being a threat to the U.S. economy. But the U.S. ran a $6.8 billion trade surplus last year with Brazil, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. A statement by the White House said Brazil's judiciary had tried to coerce social media companies and block their users, though it did not name the companies involved, X and Rumble. Trump appears to identify with Bolsonaro, who attempted to overturn the results of his 2022 loss to Lula. Similarly, Trump was indicted in 2023 for his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The order would apply an additional 40% tariff on the baseline 10% tariff already being levied by Trump. But not all goods imported from Brazil would face the 40% tariff: Civil aircraft and parts, aluminum, tin, wood pulp, energy products and fertilizers are among the products being excluded. The order said the tariffs would go into effect seven days after its signing on Wednesday. Also Wednesday, Trump's Treasury Department announced sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over alleged suppression of freedom of expression and Bolsonaro's ongoing trial. Citing a personal grievance in trade talks with Brazil and now Canada's symbolic announcement on a Palestinian state adds to the jumble of reasons Trump has pointed to for his trade war, such as stopping human trafficking, stopping the flow of fentanyl, balancing the budget and protecting U.S. manufacturing. Price writes for the Associated Press. AP writer Josh Boak contributed to this report.

Taceo has built software for organizations to use data collaboratively without decrypting it. The startup developed the tech to keep millions of iris scans private for Sam Altman's World. This is the pitch deck the Austrian startup used to raise funding from Archetype VC, A16z, and others. An Austrian startup that has built encryption software to share private data without decrypting it has raised $5.5 million in seed funding from investors including A16z and Archetype VC. Taceo, founded in 2022, has created software that lets companies verify or compute information without decrypting it. That could help payment providers verify transactions or hospitals collaborate on clinical trials without sharing patient data, the startup said. "They can run the algorithms on our encrypted data without prying on us, but still delivering the service that we find so useful," Lukas Helminger, the cofounder and CEO, told Business Insider. The startup has combined two encryption techniques to create a cryptographic tool called coSNARKs. Its code is open source, Helminger said, but runs on a cryptographic network that it plans to charge customers a usage-based fee or, in some cases, a flat rate to access. In 2022, Taceo built the encryption software for World, Sam Altman's iris-scanning verification startup. The partnership came about after the team met representatives for World, then called WorldCoin, at a blockchain conference at Stanford University. Taceo's software is encrypting the biometric data of over 14 million people using World, which uses eyeball-scanning orbs to prove people's identity. "This is like a mix between Silicon Valley and German engineering," Helminger told BI, adding that Taceo gets some revenue from the partnership with World. Helminger told BI that the startup plans to use the fresh capital to grow its team from 12 to between 18 and 20 people, and double down on R&D to address the computational challenges associated with encrypting information for AI. Over the next six to 12 months, Taceo will target customers in financial services, Helminger said. The startup's longer-term bet is to deploy its technology for AI use cases, which Helminger called "one of the toughest nuts to crack because it's so computation-heavy." Archetype VC led Taceo's $5.5 million seed round. The startup also received funding from A16z CSX, the investment firm's crypto startup accelerator, along with a_capital, and Polymorphic Capital. Dollar Gains as US Economic Strength Dampens Fed Rate Cut Expectations

The dollar index (DXY00) today is up by +0.23% and posted a fresh 2-month high. The dollar is supported by today's US economic news that shows a resilient labor market with sticky price pressures and labor costs, which are hawkish for Fed policy. The dollar also has carryover support from Wednesday, when Fed Chair Powell dampened expectations of a Fed rate cut in September when he said the labor market "looks solid" and a moderately restrictive monetary policy is appropriate due to inflation risks from tariffs. US weekly initial unemployment claims rose by +1,000 to 218,000, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of 224,000. The US Q2 employment cost index rose +0.9%, stronger than expectations of +0.8%. The US Jul MNI Chicago PMI rose +6.7 to a four-month high 47.1, stronger than expectations of 42.0. In the latest tariff news, President Trump said today that he will impose a tariff rate of 15% on imports from South Korea and that a deal with Taiwan was also being drafted as the two countries reached "a certain degree of consensus." In addition, trade deals are in the offing for Thailand and Cambodia after they agreed to a ceasefire. Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 40% at the September 16-17 FOMC meeting and 36% at the following meeting on October 28-29. EUR/USD (^EURUSD) today is up by +0.15%. The euro has garnered support from today's economic news that shows strength in the Eurozone labor market after the Jun unemployment rate remained unchanged at a record low of 6.2%. Gains in the euro are limited due to a stronger dollar, and after German Jul CPI rose less than expected at the slowest pace in 10 months, a dovish factor for ECB policy. The Eurozone Jun unemployment rate remained unchanged at a record low of 6.2%, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of a +0.1 point increase to 6.3%. The German Jul unemployment change rose +2,000, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of +15,000. German Jul CPI (EU harmonized) eased to +1.8% y/y from +2.0% y/y in Jun, weaker than expectations of +1.9% y/y and the slowest pace of increase in 10 months. Swaps are pricing in an 11% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting. USD/JPY (^USDJPY) today is up by +0.64%. The yen gave up overnight gains and tumbled to a 4-month low against the dollar on dovish comments from BOJ Governor Ueda, who said the BOJ wasn't in danger of falling behind on inflation after keeping interest rates unchanged, which dampened expectations of a near-term rate hike by the BOJ. An unexpected decline in the Japanese Jul consumer confidence index also weighed on the yen. The yen initially moved higher in overnight trading after the BOJ kept the overnight call rate unchanged at 0.50% but raised its 2025 Japan GDP estimate and 2025 core CPI estimate. Also, today's news that showed stronger-than-expected Japanese industrial production and retail sales was supportive for the yen. The yen continues to be undercut by concerns that the LDP's loss of its majority in Japan's upper house in the July 20 elections may lead to fiscal deterioration in Japan's government finances, as the government boosts spending and implements tax cuts. The Japan Jul consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -0.8 to 33.7, weaker than expectations of an increase to 35.0. Japan's Jun industrial production unexpectedly rose +1.7% m/m, stronger than expectations of a decline of -0.8% m/m and the biggest increase in four months. Japan's Jun retail sales rose +1.0% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the biggest increase in five months. As expected, the BOJ voted 9-0 to keep the overnight call rate unchanged at 0.50%. The BOJ raised its 2025 GDP forecast to 0.6% from 0.5% previously and raised its 2025 core CPI ex-energy estimate to 2.8% from 2.3% previously. BOJ Governor Ueda said the BOJ is continuing with stimulative policy settings even as the price trend rises because the trend is still below its 2.0% target. August gold (GCQ25) today is up +1.80 (+0.05%), and September silver (SIU25) is down -1.089 (-2.89%). Precious metals are mixed today, with silver falling to a 4-week low. Concerns that US tariff policy will undercut global growth are fueling some safe-haven demand for precious metals after President Trump on Wednesday said he will impose a tariff rate of 25% on India starting August 1 and suggested he would add an additional penalty over the country's energy purchases from Russia. Precious metals continue to receive safe-haven support from geopolitical risks, including the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Gains in precious metals today are limited due to the strength of the dollar. Also, today's US economic news shows a resilient labor market and sticky price pressures and labor costs, which are hawkish for Fed policy and negative for precious metals. In addition, precious metals are being undercut by negative carryover from Wednesday, when Fed Chair Powell said a moderately restrictive monetary policy is appropriate due to inflation risks from tariffs. Silver prices are sharply lower today on negative carryover from a -21% plunge in copper prices today to a 3.5-month low after President Trump excluded refined copper imports from tariffs. Additionally, concerns that Chinese industrial metals demand remains stagnant are undercutting silver prices after China's July manufacturing PMI unexpectedly fell -0.4 to 49.3, weaker than expectations of no change at 49.7.
