Jo Potter's surprising Rangers exit may suit both parties

Potter won four trophies at Rangers with a double each season and although there were questions asked that the team with the biggest budget in the league did not claim the championship, the understanding is that internally Potter retained the full support of the club.
Indeed, the Ibrox side were keen to keep her rather than take the fairly meagre compensation on offer from Crystal Palace as she looks to take the London club back up to the top flight.
There were accusations among some of the support that Rangers lacked the mentality to get over the line in terms of coping with the pressures that go hand-in-hand with winning a Championship. To that end, this parting of the ways may suit both parties.
And while people will point to the lack of a title, particularly given Rangers' resources, Potter was influential in helping to establish the foundations of an under-20 side while the staff for the women's side went up by 30%.

Affable, articulate and straightforward to deal with, there was always a suggestion of Potter appreciating the magnitude of the job in Scotland to properly elevate the game and the profile of the women's game. At times she offered some compelling insight on this, all the more so since her time with England came before the burst of interest that the Lionesses have enjoyed since winning the Euros.
There was always a sense that she would cut her managerial teeth in the SWPL before heading back across the border.
But it is no bad reflection on the SWPL to have key personnel in terms of players and managers attracting attention.
Fran Alonso claimed a bold move to the States on the back of what he achieved at Celtic – short-lived and also without winning a title – while there remains a pathway for players to head to the riches of England.
The current crop of exciting young players who are emerging into the national team will all harbour quiet ambitions of going on to play at a level where things on and off the park feel significantly elevated from what they are in the SWPL.

As the league still struggles to find its feet in terms of moving towards an entirely professional structure which still feels light years away, the reality is that the pull of England will always be seen as life changing.
One suspects she would have given a huge seal of approval to the decision to play as many home SWPL games as possible at Ibrox this season. Aside from illustrating the club's commitment to the women's game, it also facilitates supporters who are at ease with Ibrox and its surrounds.
Aside from anything else, the example of Arsenal south of the border would show that it is a massive step in the right direction.
AND ANOTHER THING
Elena Sadiku's gig at the Euros in her Swedish homeland will offer the Celtic boss the chance to get inside a tournament that some of her charges did not.
As Scotland find themselves on the outside looking in again this summer as another major competition kicks off, Sadiku at least will have a ringside seat.
The Celtic manager will work with Swedish TV to cover the tournament, which kicks off in Switzerland next week.
It will also provide an opportunity to keep her profile high on the back of a year in which she found it elevated through a FIFA Best nomination and Champions League participation with Celtic.
It will be interesting to see, however, what effect it may have on Celtic's pre-season schedule – and whether she is back from media duties to oversee the countdown to the season kicking off.
This week the club announced a parting of the ways with seven players while discussions are ongoing with another three. One of those released scored the goal that took Celtic into the Champions League this season.
Sadiku had suggested at the back of the last campaign that the players who had not improved were those that she had not signed for Celtic. Of those released this week, Sadiku did not sign any of them.
The confirmation this week that Stewart McGuire is the new Head of Women's Football Operations should signal the beginning of the foundations going down for the start of the new season.
One can only assume there has been a list of targets left on his desk.
AND FINALLY
Save us the hand wringing over the Swiss women's team losing to FC Lucern's under-15s.
Having also lost 2-1 to under-15 side FC Solothurn as they prepare for the Euros, there has been much laughing and pointing across social media as obviously this clearly identifies just how poor the standard of the women's game is, right?
The only thing it shows is the difference in physiology between male and female athletes.
It is not about skill or tactics or ability but rather a differential in muscle mass, strength and testosterone levels.
In the same way that male and female tennis games focus on different attributes – Serena Williams said it was two different sports – women's football cannot be held up and compared to the men's.

Tillman's Bundesliga move 'at final stages' as Rangers await windfall

The American spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Ibrox, scoring 12 goals and assisting five across 43 appearances in all competitions. Major Lawrence Shankland update as Hearts jet out to Spain for pre-season training camp

HEARTS are jetting off to Spain this morning for their pre-season training camp WITHOUT striker Lawrence Shankland. Jambos boss Derek McInnes had hoped to persuade him to commit to the Tynecastle club in a further round of talks this week. Advertisement 2 Lawrence Shankland is a key Hearts transfer target Credit: Alamy 2 Derek McInnes and his squad jet out to Spain today Credit: Shutterstock Editorial And he made it clear he wanted him to join his players on their summer trip. But Del's discussions have failed to reach a positive outcome and further doubt over Shankland's future at Hearts has now grown. The 29-year-old is out of contract so free to move elsewhere and has options in both England and abroad. McInnes has been reluctant to put a timescale on when he needs the Scotland striker to make his mind up - but has warned he won't wait much longer. Advertisement He remains convinced staying put is Shankland's best option and has made several pleas to the ex-Dundee United and Aberdeen forward in an attempt to secure him for next season. But with the Jambos players flying to Spain early this morning without Shankland as part of the party, the chances of him signing a new deal appear to be plummeting. McInnes has already added striker Claudio Braga in this window, with Elton Kabangu's loan from USG made permanent. While the door on Shankland is unlikely to be closed completely on the back of his decision to stay put in Scotland, the Jambos are ready to crank up their search for his replacement in the coming days. Advertisement The striker was last sighted undergoing some additional pre-pre-season training in Dubai in the company of none other than Rangers captain James Tavernier. He's had a busy summer already, after tying the knot with his new wife Nicole at a plush Scottish wedding venue at the end of last month. Rangers transfer special including Coady latest, why Turgeman move could be off & why Shankland's a no-brainer He's also been linked with a move to West Brom in England. Links between him and Rangers have gone cold recently with a new broom at Ibrox since the Andrew Cavenagh/49ers Enterprises takeover, but the sight of Shankland training with Tavernier made many Gers fans curious enough at least to see if something could still happen on the transfer front. Wales star Hannah battles back from tough ACL injuries

Cain bounced back after tearing anterior cruciate ligaments in November 2021 but then suffered another horror injury two years later to leave her career in danger. 'The pain of the second one was a lot worse,' Cain told the PA news agency. 'The first one I did my ACL. The second one I did ACL, meniscus, and fractured my femur when the ACL ripped off. 'It was pretty hefty, very painful. Horrendous. When I was on the floor I remember saying to the manager (Gemma Grainger), 'I can't believe I've done it again'.' Asked if she had concerns over her career, Cain said: 'I did a little bit. Not so much the fact I'd had the injury, it was more so mentally. 'Could I come back? Did I want to come back? It was a lot tougher mentally than it was physically.' Cain's return from her second ACL coincided with Wales' march to their first major tournament under Rhian Wilkinson in Switzerland this summer. The 26-year-old scored the opening goal from the penalty spot as Wales beat Republic of Ireland 2-1 in the decisive second leg of their Euros play-off final in December. She said: 'I knew I was on penalties before the game, but kind of forgot at first. 'I had a moment of panic as I thought: 'Right, this is the biggest moment in Welsh history and it's got to go in' – and obviously it did. 'Knowing I could make an impact in such a big game was an unbelievable feeling.' Doncaster-born Cain began playing football with her brother in the park at the age of four, and says she persuaded her mother to continue after telling her 'ballet was not an option'. Qualifying for Wales through her grandfather Bob, Cain joined the national set-up at the age of 14 but switched allegiance and represented England from under-17 to under-21 level. 'I had a bad foot injury and I didn't think international football was for me,' said the Leicester player. 'But then Gemma, who I knew from the England youth set-up, asked me to come back and play for Wales. 'I came down to watch a game with my grandad and he kept saying, 'you've got to do it'. I phoned Gemma the next day and said, 'Yeah, get me in. I want to do whatever I can to help'.' Cain is now set to meet England at the Euros, with France and the Netherlands completing a challenging group. 'I probably know most of the England squad,' said Cain. 'I've played with a couple of them at different clubs and keep in touch with Chloe Kelly as we were good friends at Everton.' Wales kick-off their tournament against the Netherlands in Lucerne on July 5. Their remaining two games are in St Gallen with France on July 9 and against reigning European champions England on July 13.
