Kolkata: Mohun Bagan SG will begin their Durand Cup campaign with an all-Indian side and against a "not so easy" Mohammedan SC here on Thursday.
Not long ago Bagan's participation in Asia's oldest knockout football tournament was in doubt against the backdrop of a yet-to-be-resolved uncertainty over the
Indian Super League
.
As a result, the reigning ISL Shield and Cup winners' senior team hit the ground running only a week ago, without Spanish head coach Jose Molina and any of his foreigners.
It has been learnt that Molina is scheduled to land here in the wee hours of Friday and defender Tom Aldred is expected to arrive the following day.

Mohammedan SC, facing a transfer ban, are also playing the tournament without any foreigner. They conceded a last-gasp goal to go down 1-2 to debutants Diamond Harbour FC in their opening match two days ago.
The Bagan assistant coach Bastab Roy — who would boss the team's dugout in Molina's absence at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday — was in the stands to get a first-hand glimpse of the young black-and-white brigade's fight and he knew that a tricky test awaits his team.
"A key feature of Mohammedan SC is that they are a young team and they don't depend on any individuals and play as a team," Bastab noted during a press conference on Wednesday.

"They have already played a game while we are going to play our first one. From that standpoint, we need to work harder to win the match. It's not going to be easy."
Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith — who would lead the team on Thursday — echoed his coach's sentiment.
"They (Mohammedan SC) have already played, so their fitness level will be better. No, we can't take the match as an easy one," the ISL's Golden Glove-winner said.
If early season rustiness is a worry, key defender Subhashis Bose is still undergoing his rehabilitation and attacker Manvir Singh is a doubtful starter for the opener.
Five days ago, defender Dipendu Biswas and attackers Kiyan Nassiri and Suhail Bhat were pressed into service for the CFL derby but Bagan ended up losing it 2-3 to East Bengal FC. Bastab now wants his youngsters to stand up and be counted for a positive start to the new tournament.
"The Durand Cup format is such that only the group winner and two second-best teams will advance to the quarterfinals. So, one loss may jeopardize your chances," Bastab said.
For Mohammedan SC coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo, it's about building a better future for the team.
"I'm happy with the way the young players are giving their best. Results may not be in our control. The way we conceded the goal (against DHFC) in the last minute was extremely unfortunate and luck was also not on our side.
But we've to accept this and move on," Mehrajuddin told reporters.
"Against Mohun Bagan, we'll try to minimize the mistakes we had committed (against DHFC) and give them a fight," he added.
DURAND CUP: WEDNESDAY'S RESULTS
Group A: Namdhari XI 2 (Bhupinder 79, Cledson 85) South United FC 0.
Group E: TRAU FC 1 (Raj Singh 58) Neroca FC 1 (Arunkumar Singh 90+6).

Reuters Amid concerns over missing out on Eberechi Eze in the summer transfer window, with Premier League champions Liverpool also eyeing a player from the Crystal Palace camp, Mikel Arteta's side are also 'keeping a close eye' on Real Madrid's Brahim Diaz as a back-up. How Liverpool stand between Arsenal and Eze Arsenal's pursuit of Eze, however, faces a roadblock in the form of Liverpool, who had won the Premier League for the second time in Arne Slot's maiden season in charge earlier this year. The Reds aren't eyeing Eze but his teammate Marc Guehi, who's part of the team's defence as a centre-back. Liverpool themselves have had to deal with rejection recently, with , who had finished as the second-highest goal-scorer last year behind Mohamed Salah. Amid uncertainty over Isak's release, Liverpool would be keen on securing Guehi from The Eagles. IND vs ENG 5th Test: 'What was he thinking?'- Ricky Ponting lambasts Mohammed Siraj for costly fielding blunder

Mohammed Siraj steps on the boundary while catching Harry Brook (Photo by) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting criticized Mohammed Siraj for dropping Harry Brook 's catch during the final hour of the morning session on Day 4 of the fifth Test between India and England at The Oval on Sunday. The dropped catch, which turned into a six when Siraj stepped on the boundary rope, allowed Brook to remain unbeaten at the end of the opening session. Brook and Joe Root mounted a strong counterattack against India's bowling attack, threatening their chances of leveling the series. The crucial moment came when Brook top-edged a pull shot off Prasidh Krishna 's bowling in the 35th over. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Siraj completed the catch but accidentally stepped back onto the boundary rope, converting what would have been a wicket into six runs. The Indian bowler was visibly distressed, burying his face in his hands after realizing his mistake. "What was he thinking? He wasn't thinking at all. He didn't have to move to take the catch, so how costly might that be? Brook is still in and reads the bowlers so well. He bats in a Test match, how you would try and read a bowler in a T20," Ponting said on Sky Sports. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised the competitive nature of the session, describing it as Test cricket at its finest. "That session was Test cricket at its best. It was a watchful first hour - good bowling and plenty of chat out there, fielders getting in the face of the batters," Shastri commented. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 30 Beautiful women who lived 80-100 years ago Undo Poll Do you believe Harry Brook's batting style resembles Rishabh Pant's? Absolutely Somewhat Not really While Prasidh and Siraj had initially put England under pressure by reducing them to 106/3 while defending a 373-run target, Brook's aggressive batting helped restore balance to the innings. "India picked up a couple of wickets - but then came the counterattack. In a seesaw battle, England took the momentum. Harry Brook did a Rishabh Pant . I liked his anticipation. It was clear that he wanted to score runs and be disruptive," Shastri added. The game saw momentum shifts between both teams as they fought for control, with Brook's batting style drawing comparisons to India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant from Shastri.
