Freddie Mercury's sister spent £3million buying back brother's possessions
Freddie Mercury's sister secretly spent around £3 million (€3.5 million) to buy items from an auction of the Queen singer's possessions.
Kashmira Bulsara reportedly spent the huge sum at the 2023 Sotheby's auction of 1,400 possessions owned by the late Mercury. The auction was the
biggest single
sale of the singer's possessions. It was organised by Mary Austin, the close friend and former fiancé of Mercury, who inherited a vast amount of his estate following his death in 1991.
'For many years I had the joy and privilege of living surrounded by all the wonderful things Freddie sought out and loved so much,' said Austin at the time. 'But the years have passed and the time has come for me to make the difficult decision to close this very special chapter of my life.'

Austin donated part of the proceeds to the
Elton John Aids Foundation
and to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, an Aids charity set up by the remaining Queen members.
However, Bulsara was upset to see so many of her brother's possessions bid on by strangers. She reportedly went to view the lots ahead of the auction and sent her personal assistant to bid on items.
Overall, the auction closed with sales of £40 million (€46.7 million). Of these sales, Bulsara is believed to have bought Mercury's Wurlitzer Model 850 jukebox, a waistcoat with portraits of his cats, a military-style jacket designed for Mercury's 39th birthday, and a set of draft lyrics to Queen's 1974 classic 'Killer Queen'.
Adding up the reported sales of these items, Bulsara may have spent up to £3 million on buying her brother's possessions.

Jane Birkin's original Hermès bag sells for €8 million at auction
Some say you can't put a price on the right fashion and style accessories but the record books from auction houses tell a different story. The original Birkin bag, named after Jane Birkin, the late actor, singer and fashion icon that Hermès created it for, has sold for more €8.6 million to become the second most valuable fashion item ever sold. Made for the London-born star by the Paris fashion house in 1984, the commercialized version of Birkin's bag went on to become one of the world's most exclusive luxury items, with its extravagant price tag and years-long waiting list. Only one fashion item has fetched more at auction - a pair of ruby red slippers from 'The Wizard of Oz' which sold for €30 million last year. Serendipity strikes The bag was the result of a fortuitous encounter on a London-bound flight in the 1980s with the then head of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas. Birkin recounted in subsequent interviews that the pair got talking after she spilled some of her things on the cabin floor. Birkin asked Dumas why Hermès didn't make a bigger handbag and sketched out on an airplane vomit sack the sort of bag that she would like. He then had an example made for her and, flattered, she agreed when Hermès asked whether it could commercialize the bag in her name. The bag became so famous that Birkin once mused before her death in 2023 at age 76 that obituaries for her would likely "say, 'Like the bag' or something,'' adding: 'Well, it could be worse.' One of a kind Sotheby's said that the all-black leather prototype was handcrafted for Birkin. It described it as a 'legendary handbag" and "one of the most iconic fashion items ever created.' The bag has seven unique design elements that set it apart from every Birkin that followed, the auction house said. It's the only Birkin with a non-removable shoulder strap. Her bag also had a nail clipper attached because Birkin "was never one for long painted nails," Sotheby's said. 'More than just a bag, the Birkin has evolved from a practical accessory to become a timeless cultural icon. Its presence spans the worlds of music, film, television and the arts; it is a red-carpet staple, a fashion magazine mainstay, and a coveted piece in the wardrobes of celebrities, artists and stylists,' it said.

Original Birkin bag sells for record £7.4 million at Paris auction
The original bag custom-made for actress Jane Birkin — which went on to inspire one of the most iconic accessories in modern fashion history — was sold for a record €8.6 million (£7.4 million) at a Sotheby's auction in Paris on Thursday. According to fashion lore, the first Birkin bag was created after the Franco-British actress and singer sat beside Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight in 1984 and mentioned she needed a bag that was both elegant and functional for her life as a young mother. Dumas reportedly sketched the concept mid-flight, designing a rectangular handbag with space specifically for baby bottles. Hermès produced that prototype for Birkin, later releasing smaller versions to the public. The now-legendary design quickly gained popularity and became a cornerstone of the brand's identity and commercial success. Standard Birkin bags today retail for over £8,000, but this original — which features Birkin's 'J.B.' initials on the flap and a non-detachable shoulder strap, unlike later versions — was sold by phone to a private buyer in Japan, according to Sotheby's. The final bid set a new record for the most expensive fashion item ever sold at auction. 'It was a travel bag. Clearly, it was worn for nine years by Jane Birkin on a daily basis, and the form is still very beautiful,' said Aurélie Vassy, head of the Handbags and Fashion Department at Sotheby's Europe and Middle East, in an interview with Reuters. Birkin originally auctioned the bag in 1994 to raise funds for Sidaction, a French charity supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS. It changed hands again in 2000, when a private French collector purchased it. When Jane Birkin passed away in 2023, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called her the 'most Parisian of the English,' a tribute to her deep connection with the French capital. Born in the United Kingdom, Birkin moved to France in the late 1960s and became known not just for her work in film and music — particularly the provocative hit 'Je t'aime… moi non plus' — but also for her activism and humanitarian contributions.
