Federal agents in Miami arrest a prominent Haitian businessman and once presidential hopeful
The arrest occurred at Boulos' home in South Florida late last week, a person familiar with the arrest said Monday.
Boulos was born in the United States but renounced his citizenship to run for president of Haiti in recent years. He obtained his U.S residency last year under the Biden administration.
Boulos, who previously has denied a flurry of corruption allegations, is the most well-known Haitian arrested to date by agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It wasn't immediately clear why Boulos was arrested. ICE did not return a message seeking details.
An attorney for Boulos could not be immediately reached for comment.
Boulos was being held at Krome North Service Processing Center in Miami, a detention center that Human Rights Watch said in a recent report is one of three in Florida that are grossly over capacity and 'flagrantly violate international human rights standards.'
Boulos founded several businesses while in Haiti, where he served as president of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In 2019, he created the Third Way Movement, a political party in contrast to the "shameless elite and the unscrupulous politicians who are working to bog down the country and increase the suffering of the people,' he said at the time, according to local media.
The party promptly stated it would seek "a historic political compromise that would facilitate the negotiated departure from power of Jovenel Moïse.'
Boulos visited Haiti's central region in August 2019 as he rallied for support.
'I am part of the system that must be destroyed," he was quoted as saying by Le Nouvelliste newspaper. 'I know how to destroy it.'
Moïse served as president from 2017 until he was gunned down at his private residence in July 2021. Dozens of suspects were arrested, including seventeen former Colombian soldiers who are still being interrogated by Haitian authorities.
Court documents have stated that those involved in the plot included Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a pastor, doctor and failed businessman who envisioned himself as Haiti's new leader. Elections have not been held since Moïse was killed.
Gang violence surged in the political vacuum that ensued, and Boulos soon returned to the U.S.
The arrest comes as the Trump administration seeks to end legal protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitians after announcing it would revoke such protections for those who arrived in the U.S. under a humanitarian parole program.
Rod Joseph, a Haitian-American running for U.S. Congress, said he has been working with the administration to avoid deporting people 'just for the fun of it.'
'If the president goes after criminals, no one is against that,' he said over the phone on Monday. 'But if you deport someone who doesn't commit any crime who's here seeking a better life, this is when we start having issues with the practice.'

Ghislaine Maxwell joins famous prisoners in move to Texas prison camp
Ghislaine Maxwell joined Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and celebrity housewife Jen Shah at a federal prison camp in Texas this week. The government hasn't said why they transferred the convicted sex trafficker and confidante to Jeffrey Epstein from a low-security prison in Florida to a less restrictive minimum-security prison near Texas A & M University. The prison is considered one of the top minimum security prisons to serve time in, according to prison consultancy group, for safety, comfort and amenities. The former British socialite, 63, is one of the most powerful prisoners in American history. The transfer comes as Maxwell's attorneys are pressing the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn her conviction while also seeking a pardon or commutation for her from President Donald Trump in exchange for her cooperation in the Epstein investigation and broader sex trafficking matters. Maxwell spent two days last week talking to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche – Trump's former personal defense lawyer – at a courthouse near the Tallahassee prison where she was serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking linked to Epstein. Officials would only confirm that they had transferred Maxwell to the federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, not why. Typically, prisoners are moved due to a change in supervisory or medical needs or as a security measure to keep an inmate safe, says Donald Murphy, a Bureau of Prisons spokesman. Moving from a low-security to a minimum-security prison typically provides more freedom within the prison. This could mean more free time for recreational activities or work. Minimum-security facilities typically house nonviolent, first-time offenders or those who have worked their way down from a higher-security prison due to good behavior, according to a prison consultant. Both facilities are federal prisons. The Texas prison is slightly smaller and holds about 600 women. Low-security prisons typically serve people sentenced to 10 years or less, making Maxwell an exception. Her release date is 2037. In Florida, Maxwell taught yoga and etiquette classes and worked in the library. The Texas facility holds a call center that employs inmates and it partners with Canine Companions for Independence to allow inmates to train dogs to become personal assistance dogs. The prison offers classes such as horticulture and plumbing and cosmetology. The cosmetology may include massage. Maxwell's convictions came from her recruitment of underage girls to give Epstein massages. He then sexually abused them. Holmes, who is serving an 11-year sentence for fraud and conspiracy linked to the collapse of Theranos, earns 31 cents an hour helping soon-to-be released women write résumés and apply for government benefits at the Texas prison camp, according to an article in People magazine. Holmes has been able to keep a mostly vegan diet in prison. Maxwell is also a vegan, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals lobbied to ensure that she had vegan meals in prison. Oklahoma to Roll Out 'America First' Test for New Teachers

Oklahoma's education department has announced plans to introduce an 'America First' certification test to ensure that teachers moving from liberal states align with its values. "One of the things that we wanted to do is, first of all, make sure that they're great teachers, right? And No. 2, make sure we're not getting these woke, indoctrinating social justice warriors in the classroom," the state's Superintendent Ryan Walters said in an interview with Fox Digital. Walters said that every teacher moving to work in Oklahoma must pass the test in order to begin teaching, and that Conservative think-tank PragerU will assist in the development of the test. 'We put the Bible back in our history standards," Walters said, adding that the 'America First' test would include questions based on American history and 'common sense.' Walters said the teaching of gender identity in other states was one motivation for the test, which will roll out in time for the upcoming school year. 'We started seeing states like California, New York, Maine as well, that are putting out directives… saying 'In this state you've got to teach your 27 genders',' he said. Trump fires US Labor Department's statistical leader after weaker than expected jobs report
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S President Donald Trump on Friday ordered that the commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Erika L. McEntarfer, be fired after data showed employment growth was weaker than expected last month. McEntarfer was nominated by former President Joe Biden to serve in the role in 2023 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate the following year. "We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
