The 'strange' thing all UK drivers should do during heatwave
While the warmer weather is a treat for some, it can cause a number of issues for motorists.
Now, as the mercury looks set to rise over 30C again, the team at Budget Insurance have shared some essential maintenance checks - including one 'strange' action.

Inspect the vehicle's battery
High temperatures can cause internal harm to the battery, and shorten its lifespan, YorkshireLive reports.
Signs a new battery is required include the vehicle taking longer than usual to start and the interior lights are dimming as you crank the engine.
Keep tyres at correct pressure
During hot weather, tyres tend to expand, which can cause the rubber to crack and heighten the risk of a blowout.
Motorists should ensure their tyres are up to UK and EU standards by having a tread depth of at least 1.6mm, and are also inflated to the correct pressure.
Top up fluids
Coolant is key to preventing your engine from overheating during the hotter months.
The Budget Insurance team said: "Strange as it may sound, you should top it up with both water and antifreeze, because a lack of the latter could damage your engine when temperatures begin to drop."
Plan your route
It's always smart to research which service stations and charging points you'll pass along your journey.
Chargemap, Chargepoint and Octopus Electroverse are all apps EV drivers can use to plan routes.
Chris Lawson, Budget Insurance's head of car insurance, said: "With tens of millions of leisure journeys made by car over the summer months, motorists should ensure their vehicle is roadworthy before they set off, whether on holiday or for a day trip.
"Cars can struggle at this time of year, contending with hot temperatures and traffic jams, so it's important that drivers do all they can to minimise the risk of breaking down."

's share was trading at $414.63 as of June 22nd. GPI's trailing and forward P/E were 11.57 and 10.06 respectively according to Yahoo Finance. Group 1 Automotive, Inc. is an internationally diversified automotive retailer with operations in the U.S. and U.K., built on disciplined growth, operational excellence, and a portfolio concentrated in luxury and import brands. The company's strategy emphasizes methodical consolidation through acquiring well-run dealerships at attractive prices and enhancing their performance via scale and operational expertise, creating a resilient and compounding enterprise in a fragmented industry. Its U.K. operations serve as a profitable differentiator and natural hedge against regional economic fluctuations, allowing management to allocate capital dynamically across markets. A core strength is its focus on luxury and import brands, which draw affluent, loyal customers and support a high-margin parts and service business. This segment functions as a stable, annuity-like revenue stream less exposed to the cyclicality of new vehicle sales, underpinning the company's operational stability. Group 1 also invests in digital innovation, exemplified by its AcceleRide platform, enabling customers to complete vehicle purchases entirely online—a critical capability in today's evolving retail landscape. A disciplined financial approach, underpinned by prudent capital management and a strong balance sheet, affords the flexibility to pursue accretive acquisitions while returning capital to shareholders. Management's proven track record and deep industry expertise reinforce confidence in its strategy, which balances external expansion with continuous operational improvement. By combining geographic diversification, a favorable brand mix, and a resilient service-driven revenue model, Group 1 Automotive stands as a best-in-class consolidator positioned for sustained, durable growth and long-term shareholder value creation in an evolving global automotive retail environment. Previously we covered a bullish thesis on Lithia Motors, Inc. (LAD) by Chit Chat Stocks in May 2025, which highlighted its disciplined roll-up model, focus on high-margin services, and significant consolidation runway in the fragmented auto dealership market. The stock has appreciated about 6.25% since then as the thesis played out. The thesis still stands, while Stock Analysis Compilation emphasizes Group 1 Automotive's international diversification and luxury-brand focus. Visteon Q2 net income falls amid slowed EV production and decrease in China demand
Visteon Corp., a global supplier of electronics and vehicle connectivity parts, said second-quarter net income fell 8.45 percent to $65 million because of lower electric vehicle production and a decrease in demand from China customers. Revenue fell to $969 million, down $45 million from the second quarter of last year. 'Net sales of $969 million came in higher than we had anticipated at the beginning of the quarter, driven by strong demand for our digital content products, particularly in North America and Europe,' CEO Sachin Lawande said during the company's call with analysts July 24. 'Despite the robust sales performance, lower [battery management systems] sales in the U.S. and the ongoing market dynamics in China resulted in sales slightly underperforming customer vehicle production.' Sign up for Automotive News breaking news alerts and be the first to know when big news happens. Lawande said future sales will depend on how automakers react to the elimination of the U.S. EV tax credit, set to take effect Sept. 30. Visteon was able to emerge relatively unscathed by tariff costs that have affected other companies, as the vast majority of its products are compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement currently not subject to tariffs. The company secured $2 billion in new business in the second quarter, bringing the year-to-date total to $3.9 billion. Visteon launched 21 products across eight automakers, with key products including a 25-inch display for the Audi Q3 platform in Europe and SmartCore domain controller programs for the Volvo EX30 electric crossover, Volvo construction vehicles and the Polestar 5. Visteon shares closed up 0.83 percent on July 24. Visteon, of Van Buren Township, Mich., ranks No. 59 on Automotive News' list of top 100 global suppliers, with $3.9 billion in parts sales to automakers in 2024. Corvette silenced in Europe — at least at start
General Motors' big, brash Corvette has been silenced in Europe for the first time — at least up to the first 70 kph (44 mph). The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid launched in Europe with a 'stealth' mode that allows it to start on electric power for silent getaways. 'It's good for neighbor relations when you leave early in the morning,' GM Europe President Pere Brugal said at the supercar's launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10. The new model adds a 162-hp electric motor on the front axle mated to a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery to create the first all-wheel-drive Corvette. Sign up for the Automotive News Europe Focus on Electrification newsletter, a weekly wrap-up of the latest electric vehicle news, including interviews and global EV sales data. Overall power is 644 hp and the 0 to 100 kph time is 2.9 seconds, making the E-Ray the quickest production Corvette available in Europe. The price in the U.K. is £153,440 ($206,000) for the coupe variant, undercutting the Z06 but far above the standard V-8 model at £92,890. Both coupe and convertible versions of the E-Ray will be sold across Chevrolet's 18 European markets. The hybrid technology gives the U.S. automaker an answer to the increasing number of electrified supercars from European rivals. 'We think the timing is perfect,' Brugal said. 'The hybrid supercar market is experiencing huge growth.' Half of the models sold in Europe's exotic segment were plug-in hybrids in the first six months of the year, marking 49 percent growth for PHEVs, preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce show. Some were SUVs, topped by the BMW XM, but electrified supercars also include the segment's No. 4 seller, the Ferrari 296 GTS, as well as the Ferrari SF90, Lamborghini Revuelto and McLaren Artura. Lamborghini's new Temerario, a replacement for the Huracan, will also be a PHEV. The E-Ray is a hybrid rather than a PHEV, but the model will also compete with the new Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid. Like the E-Ray, the 911 hybrid will have a 1.9-kWh battery pack. The Corvette was GM's bestselling car in Europe in the first half of the year, with volume of 338 — 39 sales ahead of the Cadillac Lyriq full-electric SUV, according to Dataforce figures. No other models have so far been offered by Cadillac in its launch markets of France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. More markets and models are coming, but Cadillac is in no rush to announce them. 'We're not here to push metal,' Brugal said. GM returned to Europe in 2024 with Cadillac after exiting the market in 2017 with the sale of its Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries to PSA Group. Opel and Vauxhall are now part of Stellantis. Premium rivals to BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz — along with JLR and Volvo — have found it difficult to gain traction in Europe, but Brugal insists that customers will be lured to Cadillac by the combination of design, brand awareness and technology. Cadillac has yet to offer its Super Cruise hands-off, eyes-on semi-autonomous driving system in Europe, but that will change next year, Brugal said. GM has a fleet of vehicles testing Super Cruise on Europe's major highways with the aim of following Ford, which already offers its similar BlueCruise system in certain models, including the Mustang Mach-E full-electric SUV. Last year, Ford said it won permission to offer BlueCruise in 15 European Union countries over 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of Blue Zones.
